I like mic B. crispy enough but also warm.

I liked the sound of B (P-28) the best, but I was pretty sure it was the A (P-414) microphone that I was hearing. Interesting.

I'm thinking A: large diaphragm, B: small diaphragm, C: small diaphragm tube fingers 🤞

    I'm thinking...
    A: P-414 LDC
    B: P-28 SDC + Tube
    C: P-84 SDC
I think the best sounding is C

    B. you can hear the shape of the mic case in A, and C is distorting the waveform. B has the only real sound. i bet it costs the most too.

    I liked C the best

I guessed each correctly. I really love that P-28 but I feel that the P-84 got a bad break by being positioned the furthest away from the body of the instrument, making it exaggeratedly strident. The first example of the 84 sounded gorgeous with the better placement. So even with the placement I think the 84 and the 28 are the best suited for your mando.

I deleted my first comment because I thought in the reveal that you were changing the order of which mic was which letter. I was instantly embarrassed that I'd succumbed to some hidden bias. Then I watched the ending again and realized you didn't and I wss mistaken. I stand by B being the prettiest sound but potentially too sparkly for an ensemble with a guitar. A is very neutral with no particular emphasis. C sounded honky to me but might cut through an ensemble mix without eq.
Did you point the mics at the same place on the instrument or gnereallu straight ahead? Any 6 inches between the bridge and the nut will sound wildly different.

Love how different they all sound even though they were placed very close together

If you are going to record a solo album, then probably the tube mic is fantastic. It sounds weird in comparison to the others, but listen to just it for some seconds, it has a very nice mellow feel. But you cannot beat the clarity and natural sound of that 84, or any flat sounding condenser. The original 414, and this "clone" by peluso might be versatile... but not so natural sounding. You can see in the EQ charts online: that 84 response is flatter than a Dr. Pepper that has been open all night. Most LD Condensers have boosts that suit singers and acoustic guitars, but no one asks if they are good for fiddle, mando or banjo... You might want a certain sound but once the whole band is on, there are some frequencies you need, I feel specially that tube will roll them off, and the 414 might give you the ones the guitar and voice need. Also, if you are like classical or jazz mixers, you want natural sound over all, definitely the 84.
@davidbenedictmandolin any info of their "rear rejection"? Some of these might be great for stage "one-micing".

For the best rear rejection we have hyper-cardioid pattern options for the P-414 and the P-84. That pattern can be selected on the body of the P-414, or for the P-84 we offer a hyper-cardioid that can be purchased separately and threaded onto the P-84 body instead of the cardioid or omni capsule that ship with the mic when purchased.

I could definitely tell the P-84 right away. It’s punchy / clear / warm. A was quite nice as well. B was kind of brittle.

I have or have had every mic Peluso makes. I use the P28 double mic'd with its big brother - the P280 on acoustic guitar. I like the sparkle. The P84s are excellent. The 414 - as much as I love and use that on so many things, didn't work on the mandolin as much as the other two. BTW - that 414 uses a brass capsule - like the old C12s and early 414s.
    Thanks for the demo!

I've owned numerous 84 style SDC mics over the years, the P-84 is my favorite by a longshot!

P84 seemed to have the fullest sound.
I was surprised it was not the large diaphragm mic.

A and C sounded very similar to me. B made the mando sound like it was being played across the room instead of up close.
