Cliff Burton's tone progress

  • First stop, I apologize for the dull visuals, but, since I've not been satisfied with the sound quality in the previous videos due to my limited recording it was either or, so I have decided to go with just an audio clip this time. I had to place my phone on the floor near the amp to capture approximately the closest sound to what I hear in real life and the result was a video of my sock pressing the stomps, so I figured a nice clean picture of my rig will be more entertaining lol
    Idea was to try and capture the latest rendition of both my 'rhythm' and 'lead' sounds so i played a few bits of Orion interlude and For Whom The Bell Tolls just to show how the fundamental light overdriven rhythm sound is boosted into more saturation and atmosphere(using delay) as Cliff himself did and then I play a bit of 1986 inspired solo
    Gear used is seen in the picture:
    -Epiphone Embassy PRO bass; strung with a fresh set of Elixir Nanoweb strings
    -Boss CS3 - Compressor/Sustainer
    -Morley PBAII - Bass Wah
    -Ibanez TS9B - Bass Tube Overdrive
    -Artec SE-ADL - Analog Delay
    -Ampeg Micro VR 200w amplifier head
    -Ampeg SVT 210AV cabinet
    -all the pedals powered via MXR Mini ISO Brick
    Recorded with a Samsung phone with no editing other than slapping a picture on it.
    Hope You enjoy!
    Rest in peace Master Burton, the legacy lives on \m/

    Disclaimer: I've felt a need to once more repeat that i've stopped responding to 'signal chain pls' or 'settings pls' since its been discussed not only in this comment section, but on a few other videos as well, ive been helpful as much as i could, even befriended some of the folks here and had wide length conversations via facebook concerning this sound and cliff in general...furthermore i have written a huge description of my gear used here, plus YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE IT in the photo provided here...please people, dont rush, dont conform to the "instant generation" and take only a couple minutes to actually watch the video read the possible description and a quick scroll down the comments(on any video not just mine) before you jump head first into 'signal chain pls' ...i am sure i can talk in the name of many youtubers like myself(or far greater ones) who spent YEARS reasearching some tone, listening to videos, looking at pictures, talking to the people who might know better and experimenting with gear with numbers of trial and error...so if its that hard to do a quick look, or simply watching video start to finish, then dont bother trying at all...
    The same goes for settings(on the pedals, amps or whatever)...thoss are HIGHLY INDIVIDUAL and will drastically differ depending on the gear you use...unless you have EXACT bass, amp and pedals set like i do..settings wont be of much use as it WILL sound DIFFERENT...and i am not exaggerating here...just yesterday i have plugged all this gear directly into a different amp(my old orange 35b combo which my father uses for guitar nowdays) and it sounded completely different...also whenever i change a pedal in chain i have to rearrange all the other pedals settings...not to mention that i had to change my initial settings after switching over from a precision bass to this new embassy pro...every single piece of gear and finally you as a player(how hard you hit the strings, also how fresh your strings are) will make an impact and settings would have to be corrected...
    All that being said, i will ALWAYS respond to more specific questions about the gear and how to use it and 'what does what' and 'why this and not that'...but i believe, regarding my signal chain here, it is written more times than i used it so yeah, cheers!
    Or if you really have no clue, you can list the gear you use and i will try to point you in the right direction of getting a simmilar sound..
    Hope You understand!

      And one of the reasons for this is....in the past a few times happened that i have taken pictures of every single piece of my gear with explanation and sending it to people who in turn, didnt get the same sound using my settings...and were so ungrateful and bitchy...to the point where some even called me an 'imposter' and yet had the guts to ask me a question AGAIN couple of months later...before i blocked them...so go figure...and i am sure most people, in this and other comment sections of this channel, can assure you i am helpful 90 percent of times...and give even more info than i am asked to

    It's been 5 years since my "most famous" video and i think you can hear the progress very well...however it has been almost 10 years since i first tried to put some big muff clone on my old precision knockoff in order to attempt on the great Burton's sound and playing...it has been quite a journey...listening to numbers of bootlegs, watching those rare few videos and pictures in hope i could catch a glimpse of his rig, buying selling and doing all over again for countless times experimenting with various music equipment...and in the process having fun uncovering the veil of mystery behind Cliff and his sound...and learning more about him, listening more patiently to the note choices both in solos and songs alike, talking to people who knew him and hearing stories...only made him grow even more in my eyes...this is the closest i've ever been to what i was looking to achieve and i am very happy to see you guys all around the globe still as excited as i am about it...so only thing i can say is THANKS for all the compliments and kind words and im glad You've all been around with me on this musical adventure, made a lot of great friends all around the world and its a pleasure to know and talk to about music...special thanks to Alon Gani, one of the first youtubers who tried to tackle Cliff's tone whom i'm friends with to this day and has always been supportive and to Andriy Vasylenko with whom i worked briefly on a Total Cliff book for unofficially labeling me the "Keeper of Cliff's tone" its the title i can only be proud to be given and i hope i didnt disappoint, especially since i dont consider myself a youtuber...just an afficionado who is happy to share from time to time what i've come up with...cheers from Croatia, lets keep on rockin' \m/

      Well in my case its a three way thing and i only use it for the lead tone...i use it as a gain boost(along with my wah pushing my overdrive into more saturation for solos), treble enhancer(so i get a bit more bite and top end for leads compared to my rhythm) and a sustainer(prolonging my notes)...and these three things seem to help the wah have a smooth transition along the whole frequency range without 'struggling'

      That being said...i love my dynamics and my rhythm overdrive tone here is very touch sensitive...as you could hear...light touch almost clean dig into the strings, fully overdriven...compressor would kill it off....i guess it can be used for people who want to squash their tone and have even response, good for slapping etc...i know some use it to bring out the harmonics ring louder...but like i said i only use it in the context of cliffs lead tone because it helps to shape it all nicely

    Just got myself a dual bass funk wah. With hopes of recreating this tone. Currently have a fender jazz bass, Bass limiter enhancer, bass big muff, the dual bass wah. I have a few (but not great overdrive pedals) and one really crappy but for the time being decent delay. I have tried this rig today and tbh I’m still pretty far from this tone I haven’t got nearly the same size of screams as you in this video. Do you think that the bass tube screamer would help change this at all?

    • @marijanbarac1216
      @marijanbarac1216  9 месяцев назад

      Thats odd...if you have it set like this bass>wah>muff>delay...you should get there...try using bridge pickup for solo tone that might give it a kick...compressor is more of a boost for (otherwise low gain) my overdrive...so if you use fuzz you dont need it...and you can lower the volume boost on your wah as well that might help with 'more wah than dirt'

    • @marijanbarac1216
      @marijanbarac1216  9 месяцев назад

      Also maybe add some more treble and/or mids to help it bring in some more higher frequencies...but honestly this wah should have no problems with screams...unlike other modern morley pedals which seem to struggle with that a lot on bass...if nothing works at all...try some overdrive in front of the wah and then another(or the muff) after...but again...i dont think thats necessary with this wah

    • @marijanbarac1216
      @marijanbarac1216  9 месяцев назад

      As far as the tube screamer goes...no i doubt it...honestly i could get that "kind" of solo tone with any distortion pedal...its just that i love the ts9 sound and character...but give me a random dirt pedal and i will get the solo tone...muff included...so i am sure you will get around it...try those few tips...and maybe use normal mode on muff instead of dry or bass boost

      Oh and one more thing..limiter...i havent try that one...but that should be the opposite of the compressor...perhaps you are sending too weak signal into your wah...try ditching the limiter first and see if you get any better results...i know cliff used mxr limiter at some point but still...try without first

Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer Pedal "Original" or Ibanez TS9B Tube Screamer Bass Overdrive Pedal, the one you are using in this tone test? I guess there is a big differences between them. Thanks. Hey man...i've used both(if you read the description) depending on the tone you are going for and the bass you use there will be many differences...in my case...TS9B is perfect drive for master of puppets era 1986 tones(rhythm and lead alike) but another big part of that tone is Aria bass unfortunately....guitar TS9 will sound more like Ride album...or with Aria bass like a 'less bottom heavy master tone' perhaps the best of both worlds would be a TS9 with a clean blend(like boss line selector pedal or something) so you can get more versatility of tones...i stand by both, love both...TS9B is my absolutely favourite pedal ever, but paired with Aria bass(TS9B lets quite a bit of your original bass tone through, so it will sound vastly different with every other bass...with a p bass for example i got more of a geezer butler sound with it)
      Biggest differences between them are that bass one is much fuller thicker sounding...while guitar one on bass gets more dirty and more 'fluid' twangy feel due to some low cut...overall very simmilar...but bass you use with them make a big difference
      Which bass have you got?

      Thanks mate! In fact he used both during course of his life but PWB was his thing with Metallica(and most pictures i've seen of him, where his board is seen shows him with a boost wah but i have more proof than that)...in order to give you a most reasonable answer and back this claim up i have to take couple of things into consideration but i hope you find it interesting...according to some people who knew him personally(whom i talked to)...one of the first effects Cliff had was Morley Power Wah Fuzz(PWF) and EHX Bass Balls...but he was looking for a better distortion source(PWF had 'bees in a tin can' kind of fuzz sound which was in front of the wah in circuit therefore when used with wah it was still thin and synth like....listen to Jason Newsted solos with Metallica, For Whom the Bell Tolls live with Jason etc. to give you an idea how that sounds.....Bass Balls is weird kind of envelope filter with some built in distortion but very specific sound which is not quite what Cliff wanted nor it could get dirty enough) so he tried couple of Boss pedals before settling for a while with a Big Muff PI(so now we talk PWF+Big Muff combo...Agents of Misfortune days).....now that were some very early days...later on he still used the PWF with his band Trauma...Mike Overton, guitarist and one of the main writers/composers, confirmed for me that Cliff used Fuzz Wah with Trauma running into Sunn Beta Bass head which had distortion channel...by that time Cliff most likely stopped using Big Muff as well(due to obvious distortion from Sunn head)...he still used that setup with Metallica in the early days(pre Kill em all) before he also switched to Peavey mark IV head(also had built in distortion) briefly and finally Randall RBA500 amp(which i believe was used to record Kill em all as well...due to era when Cliff was seen using it) which also had great distortion channel(listen to live at metro 83 anesthesia to hear that)...now when exactly did he switch over to Power Wah Boost is opt for a debate(two pedals looking so simmilar most of his friends would not know the difference to be honest) however we can be certain he already had it by the 1983(and used it till the end) especially due to Cliffs handwritten note where he states "at this time i use Randall amp and two effects Morley Power Wah Boost and an MXR limiter) ...i think we may have never heared PWF with Metallica...or maaaaybe just on a couple of his first shows with Metallica before he got Randall head and before Kill em all was released...however by the time of Ride album, he started using Ibanez TS9(to overdrive those big Ampeg SVT tube amps and later on Mesa D180 also tube heads in 85/6) and PWB to help push it into more saturation for solos....so the bottom line is...he used PWB for the biggest period with Metallica...and PWF was either used briefly or never with Metallica...but even while using it with Trauma he never used the 'fuzz' part of the pedal really...hope this helps...his PWF was given to Jason when he joined the band(Jason also never used fuzz part of the pedal, i believe, putting Sansamp bass driver in front of the wah in chain and using the sansamp overdrive instead of fuzz, thus achieving the simmilar effect as the pedal stand alone, that synthy sound i mentioned....Cliff on the other hand had wah first in chain then overdrive, for a more natural sound)....Cliff apparently prefered tube overdrives rather than harsh fuzzes, which he also used for 90 percent of songs since Ride album so he needed boost wah to push them into even more saturation required for solos :) simmilar to what i did here...turn wah delay and compressor on for solos...turn off and you get your 'light' overdrive for the rest of the songs...hope i helped clear it up a bit :)

I think its safe to say it was PWB on studio Anesthesia as well yes...if he ever used PWF again it was just the wah part(like i stated before, i never heared him use fuzz part...not even mixed in with another distortion because that produces a stacked dirt tone, which ends up being thin and fizzy, Cliff never mixed distortions, im positive) and possibly as a backup for the PWB if something goes wrong with the latter...however handwritten note where he mentions PWB first time, while i could not find the exact date, is said to be from summer of 1983...thats around the time KEA album was released, right? In late july 83...thats summer if you ask me lol...and since it was Cliff's first written note for the fan club run by K.J. Doughton in the light of joining Metallica, we can safely assume it was after the KEA was out already and people knew him well by then in the Bay Area, especially nuked by Anesthesia on the record, there was a demand for Cliff to say something about it...so yeah
      PBA2 is the wah you can see in this photo, Morley Dual Bass Wah...it has two different wah voices...one is a regular mode, which sounds like any other modern morley pretty much(altough with an improved low end, and bit less harsh than tribute PFW) and when you press the switch on the left you get 'funk' aka 'ktulu' mode lol which i use for Cliff tone, with a more exaggerated WOAH curve...that mode was also the only wah mode/voice type in an older version, PBA1 pro series II bass wah, from the 90s, entirely blue wah(Rex Brown from pantera used one of those)

      At the very end...around 9:20 i showcase settings and you can see how everything's connected...i also used a P bass at the time and a good TS808 clone...your settings may vary a little but you will get an idea of a sound you can expect...i would just add some delay to the chain cos it really helps get that 'aetheral vibe' back in that video i had s really cheap multi fx by behringer but sounded fine...with your P/J i would recommend to try with all three pickups configurations to see which one works best...i used bridge pickup alone on Embassy bass in this video for lead tone...back in the old video i only had a P(but it was a bit too muddy to let wah 'sing' properly, so i had to adjust settings on other stuff carefully, your P/J bass should not have that problem since it has a bridge pickup to add brightness and tighten up the low end)...today i use Aria(check newer videos if you'd like)...So try all of pickup combinations on your bass to see what you prefer...bass>pwf>ts9>delay>amp is how you would connect it
      As for particular settings, you can use the ones from my video as a guideline but it will depend a lot on your amp/speaker/even room you play in...so use them as guideline only and adjust to your liking....but add delay! Thats the biggest thing i would tell you to really help you get that feel

      Hey mate! I think i've answered that to someone in this comment section before...its a bit hard to explain like this...however...i would suggest to first go check out some sort of tutorial for pinch harmonics on guitar...just to figure out how its usually done...to get an idea...now, in my case...since i play with fingers(this kind of stuff at least, i change a lot of techniques depending on what im playing)...i will pluck a note(last note in bells for example here) normally and as i bend it upwards i will quickly but with a light touch "tap" on the string in a "sweet spot" (thats why i said you check out any guitar tutorial on pinch harmonics as they will explain it better where to find sweet spots..but i will try to break it down for you as well) but you dont mute the string...just a quick light touch/tap in that specific spot and it will make a scream one or even two octaves up...that in conjuction with a proper wah position(in my case somewhere in the middle of the wah travel....too low and its muffled too high and its just screeching treble but not suitable for harmonics to ring out....so you are looking for midrange frequencies in your wah)....if i didnt really manage to pull it off so i can hear the note struggle i will do a slight vibrato as to clear it up...that helps....you can do it with a clean bass but it will be very underwhelming and quiet...with some sort of compressor it will be heared better...but its always best to use a distorted tone for these kind of harmonics....you can also see me perform them in my old cliff tone video(the one with most views) i've done them multiple times so you can see how its done....if there are any more questions ask freely!

    • @marijanbarac1216
      @marijanbarac1216  7 месяцев назад +1

      Now what i said about sweet spots...think of natural harmonics...for example open G string...light touch on a string in 12th fret and plucking the string will give one octave up...than at like 6th one octave above the first one...than at three it will do another octave up...somewhere in between it might to a third or fifth....so the same thing applies to pinch harmonics...but your 'open string' is now where you press the note and you look for 'half of that string length' to find an octave pinch harmonic...also the same thing will apply to Cliffs tapping harmonics at the end of anesthesia...you play notes with your left hand....and you tap accordingly on the frets where the harmonic will pop out with your right hand....those are two octaves up...you can also play 'deeper' version at about half of that 'string space' between fretted and tapped notes....its a bit confusing so go check out guitar tutorial first but ditch the pick and instead of 'screaming' using a pick edge, you just lightly quickly tap the string in a sweet spot...and check out my old video where you can see me actually playing...that will give you an idea...hope i helped at least a bit

    Hi there! I've been looking to replicate this tone. Do you believe that there is any difference between the Morley PWB and your PBA-2? Because the Tel-Ray is fairly pricey and quite rare, and the PBA-2 can clearly get the job done well.
    Edit: I applaud you for being the first Cliff tone guy I've seen without a Big Muff Pi 😭

    • @marijanbarac1216
      @marijanbarac1216  5 месяцев назад +1

      First of all thank You very much, this is going to be a huge reply but i wish someone told me that years ago so i think it will be helpful...yeah haha Cliff used Muff before even Trauma really...i honestly doubt he ever used it with Metallica we know(only instance where it "might be" is studio version of Anesthesia, but even then it's more probable, due to his handwritten note and gigs around the time, a distortion from Randall RBA500 amp). Tube Screamer on the other hand was integral part for many years.
      Regarding wah...there is a difference.
      Tel Ray was a full range wah...covering the entire frequency spectrum of the human hearing...which is why it could be actually used on both bass and guitar and keys alike....and worked properly with those...for example...first quarter of pedal physical travel on a guitar would only be noticed as a volume boost(because those are low bass frequencies and guitar range doesnt belong there...so the guitar wah starts from 1/4 down...while bass would be already affected at the very beginning)...that being said...modern morley guitar pedals just dont have all that range and which is why most feel sterile with bass(at best) and some cant even produce any sort of scream at all(when used with bass guitar and distortion after wah in chain) especially if the bass has older strings with less treble left in them....same can be said for "tribute" power fuzz wah...wah part on its own is not working well with BASS(you can hear my older videos with it, but i used fuzz as a front end push as well so i got something but it wasnt quite there yet)...
      PBA(older blue pedal Pro Series II bass wah which has only one voice) and PBAII(my Dual Bass Wah which has two modes) on the other hand are bass specific wah pedals which work best in the low range of the frequency spectrum...
      PBAII like mine has "normal" mode which works as a regular modern Morley wah but with an improved low end...and "funk" mode which is the same voice as older PBA...funk mode is what i use for Cliff...it seems to encompass pretty much at least the 'bass frequency range' of the old Tel Ray..."regular mode" on the other hand seems to encompass the "treble freq range" of the Tel Ray...
      If you check out some of the videos where Cliff can be seen operating the wah you will notice he never goes fully toe down...he only uses the first half of the travel really
      Thats why i get the good tone with my funk mode(as its basically the first half of tel ray spectrum, to put it that way) and why guitar wahs and reissue pwf dont get the right tone(being second half of tel ray range)
      Now all of that said, the tone as tone goes really depends on the rest of the equipment as well...i have seen some people with Tel Ray unable to get his tone and yet i managed with a modern day wah....so it really depends...but maybe Tel Ray(if working properly, as they are very old and some tempered with) will get you the tone 'with more ease'....but it comes with more problems(big bulky, lightbulb can die, needs to go directly to 220V unlike modern ones which have LED and 9V battery or adapter options etc)
      I believe they have even warmer organic tone but i never had a chance to try them myself....and i actually wanted to achieve the tone with modern day equivalents of his gear...so its personal really...but i hope i clarified some things for you
      However i CAN get approximate/inspired by tone with just my PBAII and virtually any distortion pedal...however if you need exact sound, it will require more than just wah(check out my recent Aria Pro II teaser sample to hear how close i got)

      @marijanbarac1216  5 месяцев назад +1

      Oh and of course PWB specifically has a very loud volume (boost) knob...like 60 decibel which is insanely loud(and therefore can produce insane amount of gain when placed before drive in chain)
      My wah gets about 15db boost when cranked...so to push my very light overdrive i use compressor as well...if you only search for lead sound, some already gainy distortion, pbaII and some delay/reverb should do the trick already...but i wanted progression from rhythm to lead tone(again, check my aria sample)

    • @marijanbarac1216
      @marijanbarac1216  5 месяцев назад +1

      And last but not least...when compared to my friends(online) PWB...we both recorded strumming single string and going up and down with wah all the way, with an overdrive pedal...my funk PBA didnt sound pretty much any different than his PWB...but like i said maybe more warmth in a PWB can be felt in real life(think of it as a solid state vs tube amplifier)

    hey, what are the settings of the tube screamer?

    • @marijanbarac1216
      @marijanbarac1216  9 месяцев назад +1

      I usually dont respond to 'settings' questions...because its so individual and differs A LOT from amp to amp from bass to bass and even from room to room...in my case i have it set like this drive at 3 o clock, level at 9 o clock, bass at 3 o clock, treble at 4 o clock and mix half way at 12 o clock...but it really depends on which song i play sometimes i need less gain sometimes more, same with how much of my clean tone i want mixed in...also different pickup provides more or less bottom and clarity so sometimes i will back off eq as well, same thing with drive...my pickups could be hotter for example and pushing more drive so if you have less output from your bass you might need more drive to compensate...its a really individual thing

    What made you switch to the power bass wah pedal?

    • @marijanbarac1216
      @marijanbarac1216  8 месяцев назад

      Good question...well...i have been on the lookout for the more powerful wah...one that can actually produce vocal and audiable scream ON ITS OWN with some distortion after the wah on bass guitar(therefore bass>wah>dirt>amp kind of setting)....since all the previous wah pedals i used had trouble with that...they would just make a barely audiable chewing sound when rocking pedal back and forth...including the power fuzz wah...if i wanted to get screams i had to switch the fuzz on(or in case of my previous wah pedals, add another dirt pedal in front of the wah in chain as well as after...distortion in front of the wah only gave more of a synthy jason newstead type of sound and was not what i was looking for) but that would affect the overall sound of my distortion of choice plus add unvanted shrill like most players have in their videos.....so after i have heared some demo(now taken down, of an older PBA version...entirely blue pedal whose tone was same as funk mode on my PBA2) it seemed like a good choice....and it turned out it is as you can tell...it might be due to my other pedals and stuff but in my case it gives more cliff like tone than any other wah pedal...since it has more midrange growl and less screeching top end...so in my case its closest to old tel ray wah response....and i believe that is due to certain frequencies PBA puts emphasis on and should i say frequency range PBA works in...that works well with bass giving the right response(fully usable sweep and not just small fraction of it)...that only the old tel ray had(being full range wah which was actually suitable for guitar and bass and keys...covering the whole frequency spectrum)....unlike most guitar oriented wahs morley makes today INCLUDING pwf reissue.....plus its switchless so its easy for me to just step on it and boom :)

    • @marijanbarac1216
      @marijanbarac1216  8 месяцев назад

      You know how on the guitar all you gotta do is plug your wah into the amp(with distortion channel) and it works great...somehow it doesnt on bass...so the only one that did it for me(and i tried a fair share of wah pedals) was PBA2

    • @marijanbarac1216

      @@marijanbarac1216 now that you mentioned it, I find my crybaby bass wah to be a bit weak on the low end. Have you tried crybaby bass wah before? Sadly the overdrive on my hartke bass attack 2 is somewhat malfunctioning and I needed that overdrive to give the wah some low end fuzz and also so it won't sound dry with just using an guitar overdrive cranked to the max. My setup is Bass > Hartke bass attack 2 preamp > Boss CS3 > Crybaby Bass Wah > Ibanez TS9 > Behringer FX600 > Amp. I'll stick to the crybaby bass wah because I can get the screams as I somehow got the tone but with the pre amp overdruve malfunctioning, tone is screwed. Might have to sell this and get the sansamp tech 21 bass preamp (bit pricey on my budget) since my setup is more a mix of the three bassist heh
