@@skrrtdotcom9120 Well, yes, my point was that the assertion «never had a bank account, didn't care about money» is far from accurate when it comes to Cliff. So I suppose we agree. :) That being said, especially in that field, many artists simply spend their entire life in hotels or hire houses for a few months before going somewhere else. Being able to buy a house isn't something that appeal to them. Cliff wanted to buy one for him and Corrine, and another one for his parents.

I just got an original crybaby for my birthday. When I use this with my setup, Rumble 200 and Squier PJ bass, I can get really close to Cliff's Kill em all and ride the lightning tones. Also he used Ampeg cabinets and heads when he used his rickenbacker. After the 2x18. He used this setup when they started playing at bigger stadiums, while he still played his Rickenbacker.
I remember at the band house nobody was home it was just me I went upstairs and put my guitar player stuff into amplifier I had a 1500 watt Ampeg SVT I was playing through the tube screamer and a Morley wah pedal I think you had a couple other distortion pedals and things just a two screamer in the Morley sounded pretty good to me
@@WhichBass no problem your channel is great! If you ever get time I'd like to see Jay Bentleys bass gear. His amp has been pretty much the same for the last 30 plus years, don't think I've ever saw a pedal, but a nice bass collection.
A small comment I'd like to make. As seen in one of the images, you can see a blue Boss pedal at (2:26) to the left. Presumably the CS2. However if you look closer, you can see a white switch. This is only found on the CS1 Compression Sustainer. And during the MoP tour. There is an image of him using the CS2. The CS1 was likely stolen, and the CS2 Replaced it. And he used the MXR Limiter in between. The limiter is just a guess but I'd say it's a pretty good one.
@@WhichBass And if I were to make an educated guess as to what he used on each record, I'd say Kill Em All: Ric 4001(Not modded) Big Muff Pi Morley PWF CS1 Ride the Lightning: Ric 4001(Modded) Ibanez TS9 Morely PWB MXR Limiter 143 MoP: Aria Black n Gold TS9 CS2 Morely Pwb Just throwing this out there. The compression is a bit iffy on RTL for me.
I’m looking cause I’m playing anesthesia and it turns out the two pedals I have are two that he liked to use, I have a Ibanez tube screamer and big muff electro harmonix like the exact same kind
Love these videos, very well done, thank you. But one question I have is the timeline of the two wahs... When did Cliff use the Power Fuzz Wah and when did he switch it to a Power Wah Boost? (Like stated in the video) Which one was used for For Whom The Bell Tolls and for Anesthesia? The Power Wah Boost by itself doesn't get the tone (unless he possibly used the Big Muff and more with it), I've heard some say he used both wahs together at the same time to get that sound, but in the video above it's stated the Power Wah Fuzz was replaced with the Power Wah Boost. Also not clear how one could use two wahs together at the same time... So if someone knows the answer to this, and when he used which that would be greatly appreciated :)
From what I can tell. Cliff states in the Met Fan Club handwritten note from 1983 he uses a Power Fuzz Wah and pictures from this time support this. Later on in shows, the colour of the pedal has changed from a chrome chassis to a silvery grey pedal which is the Power Wah Boost (PWB). So it's quite a fast transition. There's no doubt he used the Big Muff with the PWB. I highly doubt he used both pedals at the same time. It was one or the other.
@@WhichBass From what I know he switched after switching to the MESA amps. Since they were tube amps he could get his overdrive by boosting them which he preferred over the Fuzz sounds. The PWB gives you an insane amount of boost.
GR8 job again - i was lucky enuf to see cliff live - metallica played the sfx hall in dublin on the puppets tour sept 86 - he was killed afew nights later - i couldnt get my head around it for weeks , a huge loss to music
@@WhichBass - yeh long time ago i was 23 lol , you do the maths!!!, yes tragedy is the word, keep up the gr8 work on the bassists - im a guitar player myself, but of course like the old bass too
I modded a PRS Kestrel pretty much like his Rickenbacker. Ie, a Di Marzio Willpower on the neck and an Ultra Jazz on the bridge, strung with Rotosound Swings I can't stress how much of a difference do the strings make, that's the first thing I noticed when I brought my bass home after it was modded. It makes playing leads A HUGE LOT easier. Sure, Cliff was extremely talented, but I think most of his crazy bends were made possible by these light gauge strings
That's an interesting mod, sounds interesting, I'd love to hear it. The light strings are incredibly important for Cliffs style of play. The same is true for Les Claypool who's coming up next video.
While I've had this bass for half a year, I have yet to upload some sound samples. It does sound somewhat close, but I'm yet miles away from nailing Cliff's tone. Not sure how he eq'd his amps, nor if he used his Morley PWB always engaged. I have a Morley Mark Tremonti Wah (supposed to be pretty similar), which is switchless, so I can't achieve the same effect unless I leave my feet slightly pushing it as long as I play lol. Tried rolling back the tone knob, and while it does help it isn't exactly the same You can check a couple of pictures here: www.talkbass.com/threads/prs-se-kestrel-modded-ala-cliff-burton.1343498/ I also own a Electro-Harmonix regular guitar Big Muff, and a Joyo Vintage Overdrive. I run the Big Muff into the Tremonti Wah, and then into the overdrive (it helps giving the fuzz a little more definition). It's a highly sensitive setup, meaning that twisting a pedal's knob a little bit can make all of your notes sound indistinguishable, or make the whole distortion sound weak Pretty sure Cliff didn't get his distorted tones overnight. It demands a lot of patience and experimentation
i have a question about the morley pedals, did he swap to a wah boost therefore replacing the power fuzz wah? And if so that would be where the TS9 comes into play as the wah boost has no fuzz ? its only a wah so he would have needed a pedal to replace the missing fuzz? I own a power fuzz wah and sounds just like his tone, any additional distortion/fuzz makes the wah sound a bit murky which is what got me thinking .....
Assembling a collection of effects to closely approach Cliff's tones, all I'm currently missing is the Ibanez HD1500...until I can afford to pull the trigger on one I'm eyeballing right now :) I'm torn between using the Ibanez TS9 or TS9B, as I have both, but so far have been using the TS9 for guitar only. Going with a Dunlop MXR Bass Compressor and relying on my amp's built-in limiter, and just recently acquired a vintage Morley Power Wah Boost :D
HD1500 has been acquired and added to my rig. I haven't found any specific information on-line yet as to what functions and settings Cliff used on this unit, so any guidance is most welcome and appreciated! Been playing around with harmonic and reverb settings lately.
I got a few questions: Did Cliff use a power supply for his pedals or did he use batteries? What kind of pedal board did he use? What power supply did he use? In what order were his pedals arranged during the RTL and MOP era? And finally is there a huge difference in sound between the power wah boost and the power wah fuzz?
I think he used batteries, I don't recall a power supply. You'll have to check the video again for the layout of the pedals as I can't remember of the top of my head. The PWF and the PWB are slightly different. One is fuzz based and the other a boost with a swell.
i have a ‘90s Morley Pro-Distortion Whah (distortion/whah/volume) pedal that Actually Sounds Exactly Like (to me & my bandees) the early Morley Power Whah Fuzz. i also have 2 Big Muff Pi pedals for the ‘90s (1 Sovtek/Cobtek & 1 Electro Harmonix) from when i was a guitar player. i made the switch to 4-stringers in 2004 & kept my guitar gear. i watched this video a few weeks back, re-stocked 9-volt batteries & put the Morley & Sovtek in line to my ‘12 Ric 4003 to an Ampeg SVT-CL atop a 410HLF cab & it was amazing! for some reason, i NEVER thought about doing this before seeing this video, so thank you for creating it!!! does anyone have the ‘90s-era Morley Pro-Distortion Whah pedal that can/could/will/would/must agree with the unique/distinct sound? i’d like to know if they’re all common or if i got lucky with a “factory freak” thump away, Low-Enders. you know you’re always The Coolest Dude in your band.
Enjoying these videos a lot. Thank you. It would be great to see videos on the likes of: Kim Gordon - Sonic Youth, Paul Simonon - The Clash, Robbie Shakespeare, Jaco Pastorius, Sting, Bootsie Collins, Tony Levin - King Crimson, Chris Squire - Yes, Stanley Clarke and Noel Redding...
interesting thing to note, is that on his rickenbacker 4001, cliff _always_ used ricko-sound, leading me to believe he would need a ricko-sound stompbox or something similair. With this knowledge in hand, it's not hard to hear he is using a bi-amped set-up
Just to chime in...possibly neither...TS9 came into play in 1984...however i am more and more lead to believe he stopped using big muff way before metallica...even before trauma...however his solid state amps had built in distortions(sunn beta bass...and randall rba500 like the one used live at Metro 83) so its most likely the amp distortion(not to say big muff wont get you there...but if we wanna be specific there is that)
difference between Morley Power Fuzz Wah and Morley Power Boost? i got the Fuzz Wah and i really wanna know if to get a tone more closer to him i should switch to the Boost
The bootleg cover of the show has him playing a Ric but according to my research "During the “Head That Does Not Bang” tour (November 1984 - September 1985) Cliff acquired a Japanese made Aria Pro II SB1000."
My dad had the Morley CBTS pedal when he played bass and i didn't even notice i just found out today that it was on my room's closet sounds pretty nice tho... (ok you just did Cliff now do a rig for Geddy Lee! Nice vid also)
Hey Yannis, thanks for the comment. That's a very good question. I haven't seen any celebrity players use the Cliff Burton pedal. That's a good point! I think I saw one or two using a Morley Volume pedal but not the Cliff Burton. For someone as influential as Cliff you'd have thought more people would have tried his pedal!

How about a video on Roger Glover for the future?
Sounds good to me Guy Dude, I'll put him on the list.
Which Bass sweet! Thanks for the great content man, you rock
That's a good point NAH. It's difficult to ascertain if it's a CS1 or 2 and at what time. But well spotted.
@@WhichBass And if I were to make an educated guess as to what he used on each record, I'd say
Kill Em All:
Ric 4001(Not modded)
Big Muff Pi
Morley PWF
CS1
Ride the Lightning:
Ric 4001(Modded)
Ibanez TS9
Morely PWB
MXR Limiter 143
MoP:
Aria Black n Gold
TS9
CS2
Morely Pwb
Just throwing this out there. The compression is a bit iffy on RTL for me.
What effects do you think he use during the live in 1985 with the chromatic intro of
for whom the bell tolls
Ibanez HD1500 I think.
Idk were u live but in my time zone this was uploaded at 3AM
The UK but even so RUclips messes with the publishing date for some reason. I uploaded it around 8am GMT today.
That was great man, keep'em coming! So far we have all the same bass heroes. Rex Brown would be my next choice.)
Thanks Ak! Awesome dude, glad to share that list with you. I'm looking forward to Rex he's defo on the list.
I’m looking cause I’m playing anesthesia and it turns out the two pedals I have are two that he liked to use, I have a Ibanez tube screamer and big muff electro harmonix like the exact same kind
Love Cliff. A lot you talk about I didn't know. Cheers.
Glad you learned something new Joseph.
Cliff em all! 🎸🤘
Love these videos, very well done, thank you. But one question I have is the timeline of the two wahs...
When did Cliff use the Power Fuzz Wah and when did he switch it to a Power Wah Boost? (Like stated in the video)
Which one was used for For Whom The Bell Tolls and for Anesthesia?
Wow live and in the flesh. That was a long time ago William. Awful tragedy.
Ie, a Di Marzio Willpower on the neck and an Ultra Jazz on the bridge, strung with Rotosound Swings
I can't stress how much of a difference do the strings make, that's the first thing I noticed when I brought my bass home after it was modded.
Tried rolling back the tone knob, and while it does help it isn't exactly the same
You can check a couple of pictures here:
www.talkbass.com/threads/prs-se-kestrel-modded-ala-cliff-burton.1343498/
I also own a Electro-Harmonix regular guitar Big Muff, and a Joyo Vintage Overdrive. I run the Big Muff into the Tremonti Wah, and then into the overdrive (it helps giving the fuzz a little more definition). It's a highly sensitive setup, meaning that twisting a pedal's knob a little bit can make all of your notes sound indistinguishable, or make the whole distortion sound weak
Pretty sure Cliff didn't get his distorted tones overnight. It demands a lot of patience and experimentation
Nice video please make a video about david Frank Bello (anthrax)
Thanks John, Frank is a great suggestion I'll see what I can do.
i have a question about the morley pedals, did he swap to a wah boost therefore replacing the power fuzz wah?
And if so that would be where the TS9 comes into play as the wah boost has no fuzz ? its only a wah so he would have needed a pedal to replace the missing fuzz?
I own a power fuzz wah and sounds just like his tone, any additional distortion/fuzz makes the wah sound a bit murky which is what got me thinking .....
I didn't know there was a chrome version of the Cliff signature wah. I need to check that out.
Yeah dude! Good luck getting one they only made a handful. I think I heard 250 Chrome and 250 Tributes ... Have to check the site!
Very well done sir!
Thank you Tgunzz, glad to have you watching.
Love your job man!!!
Thanks Helio, glad you enjoyed it.
Great video! An episode on Justin chancellor from tool would be awesome!
Thanks Erik, glad you liked it. I think Justin will be next up. Make sure you subscribe and don't miss it!
I got a few questions:
Did Cliff use a power supply for his pedals or did he use batteries?
What kind of pedal board did he use?
What power supply did he use?
In what order were his pedals arranged during the RTL and MOP era?
And finally is there a huge difference in sound between the power wah boost and the power wah fuzz?
I think he used batteries, I don't recall a power supply. You'll have to check the video again for the layout of the pedals as I can't remember of the top of my head.
The PWF and the PWB are slightly different. One is fuzz based and the other a boost with a swell.
@@WhichBass what does the MXR limiter do?
Great vid! You should do a video on Peter Steele
Thanks Rob, Peter Steele is a great suggestion I'll put him on the list.
i have a ‘90s Morley Pro-Distortion Whah (distortion/whah/volume) pedal that Actually Sounds Exactly Like (to me & my bandees) the early Morley Power Whah Fuzz. i also have 2 Big Muff Pi pedals for the ‘90s (1 Sovtek/Cobtek & 1 Electro Harmonix) from when i was a guitar player. i made the switch to 4-stringers in 2004 & kept my guitar gear. i watched this video a few weeks back, re-stocked 9-volt batteries & put the Morley & Sovtek in line to my ‘12 Ric 4003 to an Ampeg SVT-CL atop a 410HLF cab & it was amazing! for some reason, i NEVER thought about doing this before seeing this video, so thank you for creating it!!!
does anyone have the ‘90s-era Morley Pro-Distortion Whah pedal that can/could/will/would/must agree with the unique/distinct sound? i’d like to know if they’re all common or if i got lucky with a “factory freak”
thump away, Low-Enders. you know you’re always The Coolest Dude in your band.
YEAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
do Justin Chancelor's pedals.... all 20 pedalboards of them.
I'll see what I can do.
If you need any help in this, let me know.
I will take you up on that offer. Could you email me info@whichbass.co.uk so I have your email and ask you some questions?
Enjoying these videos a lot. Thank you. It would be great to see videos on the likes of: Kim Gordon - Sonic Youth, Paul Simonon - The Clash, Robbie Shakespeare, Jaco Pastorius, Sting, Bootsie Collins, Tony Levin - King Crimson, Chris Squire - Yes, Stanley Clarke and Noel Redding...
Glad you're enjoying the video Brendan. Great suggestions there, I like it. I'll see what I can do.
interesting thing to note, is that on his rickenbacker 4001, cliff _always_ used ricko-sound, leading me to believe he would need a ricko-sound stompbox or something similair. With this knowledge in hand, it's not hard to hear he is using a bi-amped set-up
I'd never heard of that before? Do you have any pics or interviews where it's mentioned? I'd love to read more.
Good series man
Thank you Kyle, glad you like it. Is there anyone you'd like to see in the future?
Which Bass maybe Chris from Muse or Lemmy
Cool dude, both are on the list. Lemmy will probably come before Chris at this rate.
4:00 (this is for me :).)
There might be copyright issues, but little soundbytes and examples would add a lot to the videos. :D
Yeah, it could be an issue but I will bear that in mind ;)
That’s how he got that Ocataver sound at Lyceum!!
That's the one man! Wish that had been on the original. Crazy sounds.
Another great job !
Thank you Cyko, good to see you again. I did read your Bootsy comment and I am still pretty envious ;)
beautiful
Just say 'CLIFF EM ALL'🔥
wow, that's a great work! Was he using a big muff or he already switched to the TS9, back in the live in chicago 1983?
I think he was using the Muff until Ride the lightning. I could be wrong.
@@WhichBass ok, thanks!
Just to chime in...possibly neither...TS9 came into play in 1984...however i am more and more lead to believe he stopped using big muff way before metallica...even before trauma...however his solid state amps had built in distortions(sunn beta bass...and randall rba500 like the one used live at Metro 83) so its most likely the amp distortion(not to say big muff wont get you there...but if we wanna be specific there is that)
A Washburn delay!!??? Cool. I want to try one
difference between Morley Power Fuzz Wah and Morley Power Boost? i got the Fuzz Wah and i really wanna know if to get a tone more closer to him i should switch to the Boost
I think one is a volume pedal basically.
Do you think he was using the Rick or the Aria in the No Remorse at the Lyceum?
The bootleg cover of the show has him playing a Ric but according to my research "During the “Head That Does Not Bang” tour (November 1984 - September 1985) Cliff acquired a Japanese made Aria Pro II SB1000."
@@WhichBass Oh damn, so do you suppose the Rick was probably retired due to the wiring issues and he just used that Sb-1000?
Almost forgot. Do you know if he used a wireless system at any time ?
My dad had the Morley CBTS pedal when he played bass and i didn't even notice i just found out today that it was on my room's closet sounds pretty nice tho... (ok you just did Cliff now do a rig for Geddy Lee! Nice vid also)
Haha, hold on to it. I think they're pretty hard to find these days (the originals anyway). Geddy Lee is on my list don't worry, I'll get to him!
Cbts?
Hello Which Bass!
I wanted to ask which today's Bands / Bassist are using the cliff burton pedal?
Thank you
best regards!
Awesome informative cool......to say the least!!🤘
Thanks a lot Michael, glad you enjoyed it.
Please do rig rundown for Rex Brown of Pantera
Rex is on the list Christopher, give it time!
Which Bass thank you good sir patient i am and patient i will be
Haha don't worry I will get to Rex. I really want to do him. It just takes a looong time for one video to be made.
What do you think he use at his solo during 1984 .
I'm pretty sure if was the Ibanez HD1500. Amazing little thing.
@@WhichBass And on the day on the green, with the chromatic intro of for whom the bell tolls ? I’m asking you because I want to have this tone. It sounds very nice 👍
I use the same strings cliff uses but .5 gauge smaller
Well they are really light gauge no wonder he can bend like he could. I thought 95 -40s was light. Thanks for the great facts mate😎🤘
Quite clever really! You're welcome Ben, thanks for watching.
Hi! Thanks for your videos! What do you know about the recording of the Intro of Orion? There are so many rumors and legends that say that Cliff used an organ for this part. Do you agree? Or do you think it's just the effect of the pedal? Bye!
In my opinion it was probably the Ibanez HD1500 as that had some crazy synth and organ sounds.
@@WhichBass Thank you!! 🙂
great research work!
Thanks Jasonic! I do my utmost.
Cliff ‘em All!!!! \m/
"say hello to tim"
immediately me: hi tim
tim: wahwahwhagssgsgs
I see you too are a man of culture XD
FINALLY
I know! You and me both!
Hell yeah
What effect pedal do you use in the intro? Effect and rig? Sounds great!
Thanks Martin, I can't take credit for that song. It's called Hey Sailor by Letterbox.
I need help, I want get cliff burton bass sound, but i don't know to but this pedal from the 70's(one friend have it) or but this but modern, i hear than the modern is more versatil, pls help me, thanks
Have you tried looking at this pedal? amzn.to/2VVJENa
@@WhichBass thanks, but i search for a video review and i didn't found one of this pedal
