Thank you for this video. I recently considered picking up Millennia at 50% off, but decided to give Ara a try first with its new patch. Maybe I'll get it in the next sale.
I see ARA & Millennia as being in the same boat - both have some really great ideas and I enjoyed playing them, but both had some very unavoidable issues at launch (I reviewed ARA on the channel when it came out and I really wanted to like it, but some aspects made that difficult). It seems the developers for both are rolling with the punches though, and committed to improving their game and building something bigger, which is great to see.
I love 4x games and would prefer the personality be more prominent considering how long you can play these games... where's the drama, the theatre... where's Sean Bean reading quotes?
Sean Bean saying 'I am fond of pigs' will forever live rent-free in my head. But yeah I agree. I'm always mechanics first - but that atmosphere and personality drawing me in means I can somehow drop hundreds of hours despite not being completely mechanically invested in (as was the case with me and Civ VI - Sean Bean keeps dragging me back in)
Can you choose not have barbarians when you start playing? And were Barbarians nerfed enough to not constantly attack you even on the easied difficulty mode?
They've made changes to barbs. you can't turn them off entirely but you can decrease presence, strength and aggression (at the lowest setting they won't raid raid your regions). I believe they've tuned them across the board also. Even on highest difficulty - barbs seem much less aggressive than they were at launch.
That's completely fair - I've heard it turn off a lot of folk. I was actually looking at Humankind not too long ago - I played it a lot back in the day, but looks like they're adding some more updates to it. I'm going to keep an eye on it to see if they either a) add more content (in which case deffo will make a video on it) or b) they stop all development (in which case I'd probably do a post-mortem video on it)
I don't think any of the non-civ historical 4Xs lacked original ideas - more just implementing them well enough so they stood out beyond being a quirk on the side
It's still a bit of a shallow system imo. Gives a lot of culture so very strong, but not a very engaging mechanic. (Plus every other nation hating you for being a different religion hurts)
I smashed the like button when you said "my personal favorite: Old World".
Old World gang rise up! Love the game and I will find any excuse I can to insert it into conversation.

The greatest hinderance to me is that every time I play it I think "Man, what if this was Civ meets Victoria".
Millennia is a history teacher's nightmare. It's a What If made into a video game.
Opinion on Imperium Romanum? Praetorians has more combat

how to not insult with a reply to this post? ...

@@ginxtv Then I'll give the game another chance, thanks!
The graphics really break the immersion for me. It just doesn't make me want to even try it. Can you do a review of Humankind?

Market too crowded for second chances and unfinished releases IMO. Especially if the product lacks original ideas.

Does religion make sense now?

That UI design is HORRID it looks like a bad, free, mobile game
The UI was definitely one of my biggest criticisms on launch. It hasn't gotten any better, I just got used to it
