According to the manufacturer, AS9 (or AS9A1 depending on how they name) will have components with extra safety feature (mechanical function?) per Australian request. Maybe they will add additional protector like Norwegian variant too.
The Australian Army recently announced in September that they were proceeding with the previously canned SPG purchase from Hanwha under a sole source decision, the re-designated K9 SPH (AS9 SPH) will be built in Australia in Geelong, so the facility is already being put into place for a possible Redback as well. And you can guarantee the Australians will screw up the production, just like they screw up everything else they produce under license. The Meko 200's, the Collins, the Steyrs, the 105mm Light guns - everything. They just can't resist facking it up in some fashion.
Lots of South Korean kit is very impressive - they've built some really good ships, missiles and kit recently, not really surprising considering they've loads of experience in high tech, optics, displays, heavy industry, motor vehicles.... basically everything you need to build military equipment. They also have a rather nasty military pledged to destroying them sitting on their doorstep.... interesting that the brakelights aren't LED, wonder why.

Well Mats, you say you do not expect the South Koreans to build highly sophisticated equipment, but look at their MBTs, they are quite impressive as well. OK, they incorporate some foreign equipment (only to produce and improve on them themselves) like engines and guns, but SK has become and technological powerhouse in its own right fro a long time. Its shipping industry is leading in the world only now to be slowly overtaken by China in terms of production volumes (and probably not so much in terms of quality) whicj is building pretty impressive submarines for the ROK Navy. Its aerospace industry is quite respectable too with the T-50 being a domestic programme in which SK partnered with Lockheed Martin and it's in the process of developing a semi-domestic fighter aircraft somehwere between 4++th generation and 5th gen. Besides that, Samsung is a world player in domestic appliances, telecom and mobile telephones. In short, the South Koreans are a force in its own right to be reckoned with. As for powerfull, sophisticated military vehicles I share a certain amount of scepsis with you. Our Dutch CV90/35NL have suffered problems in part for not being 'hooligan proof.' Having been with the armoured infantry I know the equipment has to robust enough to survive an encounter with not very sophisticated riflemen in prolongued high tempo operations or exercises. Touch screens are a bit too delicate for my taste. And a sturdy climate control is far from a luxury with all that sensitive computing power in the one end and about 9-10 smelly guys covered in sweat, dirt, grease etc. on the other. The last thing that stands out about this vehicle - and many contenders as well - is the very high profile. WIth so many advanced, long range and relatively cheap ATGWs flying around on any future battlefield, I'm not to sure whether size + APS/ECM and armour equals survivability anymore. You made a video on these unmanned vehicles with an autocannon the other day. At the moment I think that is the way forward: dispersion of firepower, sensors and riflemen in lighter, yet faster vehicles that are cheaper and easier to replace rather than heavy armour packed with tonnes of sensors and protection systems. I'd be quite interested to see how the USMC transformatio is taking shape; the present day Commandant, general Berger, wants smaller, more agile units that can swiftly take a position (by force if necessary), hold on to it and fly or sail massive artillery and long range missiles in to push the potential adversary (most likely China) in the defensive as fast as possible. If I'm not mistaken that will require more and smaller ships that are harder to detect and a dispersed force concept rather than the massive Marine Expeditonary Forces (MEF) concept. The USMC have said goodbye to their Abrams already. Let's see what's next, in the likelyhood that Australia will follow suit in one form or the other. By the way, when will I be able to import Matsimus Armoured Mapple Sirop from your webshop??? :D Cheers from the Netherlands.
A couple of things worth noting, in that the the Lynx is modular with interchangeable mission modules, a major major plus. The Lynx can change out calibers easily and use the Bushmaster system that can fire Rhinemetal alloy case ammo and the America steel case ammo. The turret is made in conjunction with Israel and Australia’s Eos targeting system. All up it’s about speed, versatility and being able to produce in Asstraya, mate. Oh those rubber tracks are from Canada and they are pushing hard as well.
FMD I’m doing trolled by my own countryman. I know we love to shorten everything, but last time I checked there was an Aus in the front of Australia, you must be a Tasmanian.

"when you think of South Korea you don't think of the most sophisticated or technologically advanced equipment." Matsimus, what are you talking about? They are also creating a new 5th generation fighter and developing fully autonomous armoured vehicles right now. South Korea makes some VERY advanced equipment.

The big question about the turret: Can the cannon take out a reviewing stand holding senior officers _by ramming it?_ These are requirements in the Australian Army …
@@jakerubino3233 I don't get how you made that connection... The joke about the review stand is because an Australian M1 A1AIM main battle tank accidentally knocked a review stand with its gun tube while performing a rolling salute at a ceremony. So the joke is that all new Australian Armoured vehicles need to ensure they have the ability to knock a review stand in order to be chosen. The incident you are jesting about happened in the United States and was an M60A3 Patton... In 2007, an Australian citizen took a privately owned Trojan APC on a rampage against mobile phone towers. But that vehicle was never used by the Australian Army, 2 were trialled in the early 60's, but the trials were not successful for it.

Looks really good. Especially like the 360 virtual view part, if they can get that to work seamlessly, it could boost battlefield awareness a lot. Protected ATGM in turret is also really nice, dual feed autocannon, rubber tracks, Hard kill protection. Only feature that would be missing would be commander VR drone control. Imagining a commander that could easily direct and see through a drone to get better overview. Having it dart out and give a overview of what is behind a hill or fly past buildings just looking in windows or the roof before the vehicle drives down an exposed street or looking behind walls to direct gunner. Then just given recall command and it would fly back and auto-land on induction charging plate.

I wouldn't say that. Just when one PM orders something the next PM cancel something and it becomes crap. Australian politicians needs to follow through with what is needed and stop cancellations in important sectors like in our defence. Our military is small enough. They should atleast have the best available equipment for them. military with good equipment can defend with a big punch. A small military poorly equipped end up putting up only a white flag
I’m impressed with the rubber tracks the technology of the modern rubber track is, in my opinion, such that it can compete with traditional steel track and be more capable with less maintenance at least on a light vehicle as compared to a MBT.
Less vibration, low cost, less weight, faster repair on battlefield. And hence suitable for Australian landscape. Countries like Korea will require steel tracks like the K21 IFV.
Any one who visited S Korea will say it is highly technological county and their infrastructure will put USA and other Western nations to shame. They have North Korea along with China and Russia near their border. They have to be on constant guard and have been making great weapons lately. Its matter of surival for them.
Some Westerners tend to underestimate Korea for it's technical achievements, especially Brits and Canadians casually underrate Korea... Luckily Australians are different from Brits & Canadians.
I’m so glad that to me as foreigners are so interested in my home country’s military vehicles, I thank u so much keep up the good work ! Please make more videos of korean military please !
Whoa was that a Merkava at timestamp 5:00? Seeing IFV main guns increasing in caliber appears to be putting us into the 21st century triumvirate of the light, medium, and heavy AFV.
To be more accurate, the chassis is provided by Hanhwa but the turret is from an Israeli source. Additionally, among South Korean defense pages, the AS21 chassis is based on the larger K9 SPH rather than the K21 IFV as had been speculated early in the AS21 program.
Probably because they have really jumped forward in the last couple of decades. Ask the average person which countries they think have advanced militaries and South Korra wont spring to mind for most.
Thanks Mat for presenting this, it looks to be a great vehicle. We should also have a more powerful tank with my fangs attached. The one thing I would like you to look at is the French subs that we have/will acquire. To me they should have been nuclear propelled due to our massive coastline that we need to control.
They need to fit in ships and planes so we can send them overseas in an emergency within our region and beyond when people are in need of freedom, and protection during a complete break down of society
Very sexy IFV even though the Lynx will win the beauty contest. But thats not the thing to make a choice. I am very excited to see this thing coming up. Its good for Rheimetal either way, because they will see, they can't stop and need to go on. Cool vehicle. Love it.
Biggest advantage of Redback over Lynx to me is the machine gun. Lynx coaxial machine gun is fixed to the turret so it can only face the direction of the turret. Redback's machine gun moves independently of the turret. This may sound minor at first but imagine urban warfare with a machine gun that can't turn.
This is incorect the lynx has a unmanned second turret for on the top, that can aimed just like this tank. But the lynx has a 3 barrel gatling as an extra that is more than this tank can offer!
These companies are VERY keen to win contracts with the Australian Army because winning this contract will give them a big boost in credibility when they put forward their designs to other like nations.. Other armies know that the Australians will not be buying second rate.. So they will take note of who wins these contracts..
An excellent video, as always. It may be a piece of news that presently Poland is considering procuring the AS21 Redbacks platform for their heavy IFV program along with K-2PL Black Panther MBTs for which the contract was recently (2 weeks ago) signed. So maybe not only for Australia .......
Some updates about that. I love the way this IFV presents itself and ALL "even" German new IFV's have "early stage" problems. But about some less known facts about current AS-21 development. As for now AS-21 "Redback" exists in 4 prototype units. It is important to emphasize that those units are not even early production units just assembled prototypes. 3 of them are tested in Australia (hot weather) and 1 is tested for the possibility to be adopted by the Armed Forces in Poland (very cold weather). Let me share some early conclusions, known to the public, from the Poland tests. As for now AS-21 "Redback" failed field tests. The turret which is originally offered to the Australian Armed Forces, and which is a non-Korean design, failed to work in cold temperatures, and winter conditions in Poland, and it is said to be replaced with a design from a different manufacturer. The chassis itself also has many "early stage" technical problems and Koreans are currently working hard to make it work. This is just to show how much time it takes, how much work needs to be done, how difficult it actually is to meet the different market needs and make a modern military product.
And finally Poland didn't pick it up because the Redback demonstrator was deemed incapable of handling cold winter temperatures. In effect Poland decided to design the heavy IFV by themselves and base the design on korean K-9 howitzer chasis (similar to the Redback). The new heavy IFV design should be presented to the public next year.
Do you know about the norwegian army got the K9 and are looking at replacing there old leopard 2A4 with them possibly looking at the K2 black panther (I think it was hanowag that made an instagram post showing the norwegian representative looking at one). also the K2 is being pitched for the polish army.

I love it. About 10 years ago, I was involved in the KDXlll project
South korea, Israel and Austrailia work together for this. It is one of a great joint project include three countries :D
The Australian Army recently announced in September that they were proceeding with the previously canned SPG purchase from Hanwha under a sole source decision, the re-designated K9 SPH (AS9 SPH) will be built in Australia in Geelong, so the facility is already being put into place for a possible Redback as well. BTW, Geelong is pronounced Gee long as in gee look at that it's amazing.

Pretty sure they are. The lights “flash” whenever the brakes or turn signals are applied rather than “fade in and out” like with incadescnet bulbs
I am formerly of the 82 ABN. Many years ago, we had M551 Sheridans which could be parachuted. I recently saw an article where they are getting another form of light armor for the division. It is a needed asset. I often wonder why we don't look at Soviet type stuff and make a hybrid with western versions. Thanks for the great articles Matsimus. And no surprise the Koreans kick ass at making something good!
I'm a big fan of systems that can punch above their weight. The Spike missiles on there (even if it's just a couple) will substantially alter the behavior of an enemy's heavy armor units. I think that's pretty cool for an IFV.

Cheers from the Netherlands.

A couple of things worth noting, in that the the Lynx is modular with interchangeable mission modules, a major major plus. God I love modern IFV designs!
Like the versatility of this vehicle and the ability to change main guns.
The big question about the turret:
Can the cannon take out a reviewing stand holding senior officers _by ramming it?_
These are requirements in the Australian Army …
🤣 Savage!
That requirement is only for MBT's..... the AFV requirement is too drive over them...
Or how about - easily stolen and used to display just how much the new driver dislikes banks and various other establishments in sight!

As an Aussie I would love it if we got this vehicle. But our defence procurement is too corrupt
I agree with
meaning what ? give examples of the corruption ?
I think Boxer was a great decision. I wonder, however, if they will spread the manufacturing around. Qld got Boxer with the possibility of more later. Victoria has finished the M113 upgrades so Hanwha already the site for the 155 Hanwha howitzers . . . Jobs, jobs, jobs.
Maybe the South Koreans should also produce an MBT with a 122 mm cannon and the same anti-tank missiles as the Redback and call it the Funnel Web...
And it Won! I wonder how those tracks go on anti personnel mines?
And I thought it was dry here. Bloomin' hell! Up north it can be muddy as and down here we have snow in Winter.
K9 thunder has taken the contract for the Aussie self propelled artillery.
This is literally something I've built or bought in more than one video game. I need it
Any one who visited S Korea will say it is highly technological county and their infrastructure will put USA and other Western nations to shame. They have North Korea along with China and Russia near their border. They have to be on constant guard and have been making great weapons lately. Its matter of surival for them.
Survival of the fittest. If you have hostile nations surrounding you, what else to do? Make more weapons.
Some Westerners tend to underestimate Korea for it's technical achievements, especially Brits and Canadians casually underrate Korea... Luckily Australians are different from Brits & Canadians.

To be more accurate, the chassis is provided by Hanhwa but the turret is from an Israeli source. Additionally, among South Korean defense pages, the AS21 chassis is based on the larger K9 SPH rather than the K21 IFV as had been speculated early in the AS21 program.

UPDATE: Australia selected the Redback, but a reduced number.
