Thank you so much for this video! I successfully upgraded the CPU of a 3D variant of this laptop and a non-3D variant of this laptop with your tutorial! Just letting everyone know, the max CPU the Inspiron 17r SE 7720 pc can handle is an Intel Core i7 3840QM. The max ram it theoretically supports (that the processor will accept) is 32GB. I know it is documented that 8GB is the limit, but 16gb is what I tested it with and it works like a charm. 32 is the unknown max, try at your own risk. Also 32GB DDR3-L ram is hard to come by without paying almost what the laptop is worth nowadays. I benchmarked both laptops before and after the upgrade and there is a noticable improvement. Plus the interface in Windows 10 is much smoother now! I appreciate your video once again! Thanks! -Andrew
Thank you so much for uploading this video! I spilled water on my laptop and this video helped me disassemble it, dry the parts, and put it back together! God bless you!
This is a great tutorial, I needed to change the thermal paste on my laptop and followed step by step your instructions. Everything went great! Thank you again, great video! :)
YOU did a super great job of showing how to take apart and put back together this laptop. I've had my Dell 5720 for a long time and I needed to put new thermal paste on the CPU. I can't thank you enough on how well you did.....and.....I'm so glad you didn't have loud music blaring while in the process. It was perfect! Thank you! Thank You!!!
This was perfect! My cpu paste was rock hard, and I couldn't run anything on my laptop without it over heating, this solved my problem. Thank you guys so much. :)
Thanks for the tutorial , I've recently taken this laptop from a family member and was looking for a guide on re pasting and cleaning guide . Perfect 💯
Thanks for this awesome video! Just one IMPORTANT update - my 5720 doesnt have removable cooler. Dont try to pull out yours! It's okay to remove it with motherboard, if it doesnt came out easily. Cheers
I've had this dell for 4+ years and enjoyed your videos because it allowed me to do some minor upgrades and reparations. Thanks a lot for that. In my mind, I was hoping that when it would finally break I will found the replacements parts on your website. But the motherboard ain't in stock anymore :( Hope I'll find some on the web but looks impossible...
Hi. Great video! Tnak you! I have a question: what socket model is 7720? Mine is dead and i want to change all my components to another laptop with the same model of socket. It is possible right? (Sorry for my english).
I'm a real newbie at this, but reckon I'll have a go. But it's not worth it if I have software activation problems. I have 2 questions - 1) Please confirm the new mobo comes with a dell bios and I'm not involved in swapping a bios chip 2) Will I have hassle re-activating my Windows & Office when it all works again? Sorry this is a software question about a very clear hardware video, but I suggest it's a relevant factor (and proves I'm a newbie too!)
+Graham S The motherboards should have BIOs loaded but it may not be the latest revision. It's not a big deal, you just go to support.dell.com and to download the latest BIOs and you're all set. Even if it doesn't have the latest BIOs the laptop will still boot up and work enough to get online but it might not have all the security updates, so you'll want to check as soon as you're done with the install. As long as your hard drive is working properly you will not have to reload or reactivate any software. It should be pretty simple. Plug in the hard drive and power it on. If you haven't done this before, the key things to watch out for are the cables. Don't try to force anything to come unplugged or press to hard to plug the cables back in. If you are unsure of how a cable latch works, try to watch the video for a better view or find picture with a better view. Some of the latches for the cables are very fragile and if they break, you're looking at buying another motherboard. Just take your time, try to remember which screws go where (keep notes) and you should be ok.
+Parts-People.Com, Inc Thanks. Yes, I've flashed a BIOS before, so no worry about old versions. On activated software - I had thought there was a hardware hash check which would fail of all the mobo components changed. Maybe that's an urban myth. AN EXCELLENT VIDEO - Congratulations.
+Graham S If you were swapping the hard drive into a different model laptop you would have to reload software, but because you are just swapping parts the hard drive and software will all be compatible and activated. You wont have anything to worry about in this situation.
Hi I'm about to attempt this and I'm pretty worried I'm gonna mess it up lol Are the screws for each 'section / layer' the same size? what would you say is the best way to keep them in order?
If I recall this laptop only uses 2 or 3 different screw sizes (2x3mm, 3x3mm, and 2.5x5mm). If I'm correct about that, it will be easy to figure out where the screws belong. If you need to simplify things, try using an egg carton and label the steps that you removed the screws on.
Hey, I have to replace my cmos battery and was wondering if it would be easy to do, is it soldered in or is there a clip? And do you remember what kind of battery it is so I can just do this once :) thank you great video.
You have to remove the palmrest to access it. You can catch a glimpse of it at 4:05. It's a coin cell that sits in a round slot. No soldering required and can be removed with a small flat head screwdriver or plastic scribe. Unfortunately I don't know the battery part number. I hope this helps.
hey man, i have dell inspiron 17R 7720. i have a weird issue, I know this laptop has a hybrid nvidia intel GPU for some reason my nvidia GPU is never detected, it only runs on intel graphics, I have tried installing even linux system on my PC to see if that could fix the issue, but the problem is still as it is. ANY HELP FROM YOUR SIDE WOULD BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED. if you can help me solve this issue, and make my GPU work. thanks.
I don't know about graphics card, but PU can (actually MUST) be replaced with fresh goop. Arctic Silver sells thermal grease remover called ARcticClean 1&2. They have videos online that show how to apply their thermal paste.
So in the case where one of the on board usb ports is a bit shaky and sometimes doesnt register connections, does that mean I'm screwed unless I get a new board?
+Real Fally (B2) A new motherboard is generally whats needed, unless you know someone that is really good at on-board repairs. That's not something that most laptop repair shops will take on.
I would try removing or loosing the keyboard and reseating all the cables underneath it. One of the cables is for the power button. I believe it's the cable @3:04. If that doesn't fix it you will need to go through the entire system and look for any other loose cables.
Sup, I got Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 and my microphone input does not work. I am pretty sure it's hardware issue. How can I fix this? I tried to find a part on your page but couldn't find it. Tnq
the current motherboard i have now has the intel hd graphics card and i was wondering if i could just switch it out with a motherboard that has the nvidia card, and would it affect anything on my computer?
Man Wit Hair Yes, you can swap the motherboard with the Nvidia version. You will also need to change the heatsink to the Nvidia version also, and everything else should be compatible.
I had a question, where is located the graphic card on the 7720 ? My graphic card is making my life painfull right now and I need it working back again, I though I could try to replace the thermal paste but I don't want to open it and try random things, thanks.
Fraknoff If you have the nvidia chip set, it will be below the CPU. When you remove the heatsink you will be able to tell where the GPU is. The intel graphics shares the CPU.
Hello.... What is the difference between 5720 and 7720? Can I use 5720 motherboard in a inspiron 7720? I have a inspiron 7720 with motherboard problem and 5720 motherboard is cheaper. It will work with the parts of 7720? I will lose performance? what will happen?
The 7720 has nVidia 3D Vision but is not compatible with WiDi. The 5720 does not have 3D and is compatible with WiDi. I think you can swap the motherboards but you might have to change the heatsink or LCD cable too.
I have the 7720 and it doesn't have 3D vision. I think the difference may be in the exterior components from what I read, but if anyone has a link showcasing the differences I'd love to know too.
This link has the specs for the 7720. Some of the specs are compared with the 5720. It should give you some insight. www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/inspiron-17r-se-7720/manuals
You only need a small amount of thermal compound, about the size of a small pea. I recommend using Arctic Silver. www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=11028

I need to do the mother board and hard drive. Do you guys sell the 1TB drive for the 5720 I inspiron?
this video is so clutch thank you
Hi, I have got the 7720. Is it possible to change the graphic card or is it fixed on the motherboard? Thank you for the great Video!
Maylene Kuro Unfortunately, the graphics is attached to the motherboard.

Where is the bios chip?? I need to reset and or replace it to get past hdd password lock...
Thank you so much ! really sophisticated :)
I know this video is pretty old.
But can you tell me if we can remove those copper pipes and apply thermal paste for CPU and graphic card?
I don't know about graphics card, but PU can (actually MUST) be replaced with fresh goop. Arctic Silver sells thermal grease remover called ARcticClean 1&2. They have videos online that show how to apply their thermal paste.

Thanks,
can you tell me please the specific name of the cable at 3:36 , mine go broken and i want to replace it.
+Shady Kheit That is the DC Jack and cable.
when I did this with a motherboard I bought.. now my laptop wont turn on at all? Did I miss a certain power cord?
+Picket I would go through the process again and make sure all the cables are plugged in and fully seated. I loose cable can cause it to not turn on.
thank you i'll try that

Where can I buy a motherboard for Dell Inspiron 7720 r17???
You can find Dell Inspiron 7720 Motherboards here ppci.me/c/141/416/motherboard
Parts-People.Com, Inc Thx for the answer. Do you deliver to Denmark?
Svenskarin
Yes we do deliver to Denmark. You will be able to find shipping rates and options on our website.
Also how much thermal compound would you recommend using? And any particular brand or type?
You only need a small amount of thermal compound, about the size of a small pea. I recommend using Arctic Silver. www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=11028
What sound card does this laptop have?
It does not have a separate sound card. It is built onto the motherboard.
i cant find my part online :(
where is the video card?
+tombapilot04 There is not a video card in this laptop. It has a GPU chip that is built onto the motherboard.
Now, if I could just find a video about popping a i7 processor in a 5720.
You'd literally just put it in instead of the same one as shown in this video. As long as it's compatible it'd work. Not sure what the confusion is.
@@y4si0 existing CPU is i3.
How remove the bios password
The BIOs passwords cannot be removed. You have to replace the motherboard.
jajajaj is beter rwrite de bos is fully stupid change the mother
sorry
You don't need to replace the whole board. To remove the bios password for a laptop. The last ditch method is to simply replace the bios chip.
