Thank you for alerting us the New Directions Publishing. It seems that NDP is a publisher with high literary taste. Following the interest of my profession, I follow the publisher Karnac and Polity. Both are British.
I like Clarice Lispector quite a lot and several of hers I have picked up over the years have been New Directions published. I also like NYRB, Parnassus, & another European publisher that I can’t remember… I’ll look it up and put it in the comments. 👇
Oh! I didnt realize ND had published some Clarice Lispectors. Now that I've taken a look at the Complete Stories book I have, I see that it's ND! Parnassus. Oooh. I'm going to explore that. Thanks!
Going back to this because I absolutely loved The English Understand Wool! I never expected the turn of events there and the writing is clever and funny!
I've just jotted down her name on my white board to remind myself I do need to get to her. I had Sweet Days IN MY HANDS from the library a couple of months ago and didnt get to it!
Yes! I'm a New Directions fan. I adored The Wall, too. Also NYRB and Archipelago are favourites. I like Seagull books but they are a small fortune. Within Canada, I tend to gravitate to Coach House Books. There are so many great publishers, have fun on the treasure hunt.
Hi, Quiet Midden. Thanks for that feedback. Oh my goodness, the black hole of NYRB's website! I've been and have found I have to stay away! Those covers. Archipelago, yes!
'Hermione' is said Her-MY-o-nee 🤎 Thanks so much for introducing me to these, the covers are lovely which is a big thing for me when buying a book. I've read HD's wartime poetry trilogy, she writes around the time of T S Eliot, was into Ancient Greece and blended both in Trilogy, so really interested to have a look here at the one you showed. PS love to see your cat Suki and the shots of your home as well as the car crams with library stuff. Loving it, thanks for making these videos. Looking forward to the next one...
Oh Hilary, how very kind. Thank you. Well, you’ve sent me down a very enjoyable HD rabbit hole. How fun. She is fascinating. I’m so glad to know you’re out there watching. Thanks for joining the conversation!
Same. I recently found New Directions Books. Their covers are so beautiful. Now I'm in their japanese writers.
Their website sends me down a giant rabbit hole of the best kind!

Alma books. And also Virago.

@@thelefthandedreader6632 haha - I meant Persephone not Parnassus- Parnassus is a bookstore 🤦🏻♀️
@@novelideea , funny. Oh yes, Persephone! Whenever I've stumbled on a Persephone in a thrift store, what a find!

Thanks for reminding me about that book! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
New Directions published a great novel titled His Name Was Death by Rafael Bernal. His Name Was Death could easily be adapted into a criterion movie.
Thanks for bringing that up. I've looked it up and wow. It does look interesting. Criterion channel! I've just started a trial subscription. 😃
(By the way, “H.D.” is the ‘pen name’ of the author as of Hilda Dolittle. She is one of the Freud’s patients, or analysand.)
How interesting!
I’m obsessed with New Directions! I read Sweet Days of Discipline a few years ago and it started a lifelong obsession with Fleur Jaeggy 🤩

@@thelefthandedreader6632 That's happened to me so many times haha!! But yesss, hope you enjoy it when you finally get to it.
