You're absolutely right about that.... I used to love watching this show in the morning with my dad when I was getting ready to go to school .( my dad had retired early.... he loved watching this .. sometimes I would end up staying home in the morning to watch it with him , the whole show )
Looking at Jane Pauley takes my breath away, what an absolutely beautiful woman, total class, elegance and grace. Who wouldn't want to watch their show? She is still the best of all time. Miss ole Gene too, but not that much. He had a happy persona and his looks....well, that would wake you up in the morning. Need coffee. In comparison to the shows today, their bunch of lamebrains egotistical nitwits and jerks. Miss good television.
I really hope NBC had the good nature to give Jane Pauley a raise, because I believe that's what she was giving the show's ratings! Not to mention my heart rate and my will to live!
Jane Pauley was a smokeshow here. I was born 3 years later when she was one of 3 morning blonde bombshells opposite Diane Sawyer on the CBS Morning News and Joan Lunden on ABC's Good Morning America.
Jane seems distracted through the whole thing, like someone backstage is trying to make her laugh or mess up. It's kinda cute. Wilkes Barre still looks *exactly* the same. That's the courthouse.
Maybe from the fact that, being a growing multicolored arc, it's reminiscent of the peacock that was used to represent the rainbow of colors you'd get when watching an NBC presentation In Living Color.
Perhaps because they're both semi-circle shapes. Alot of people get those two confused. BTW, although they changed the main theme (in 1978) the musical tag at the beginning remained the same for the remainder of that period.
Jane Pauley looked so young and she still looks good Jane Pauley along w/Ann Curry and Meredith Vieira STILL looks HOT despite their age and they're all Class Acts as far as I'm concerned and that's a good thing.
Sandy Hill was on Good Morning American at the time of this video. A few years later, Jess Marlow would co-anchor with Sandy Hill on KNXT (now KCBS) in L.A.
Jane was so classy...I can't stand morning shows anymore with all the fake smiles and coffee sipping. A buffoon weatherman is standard now too. I like a man with a deep voice reading the news, too. It's all pretty women and pretty boys and puff pieces now. Blech.
This was before Tom Brokaw was promoted to anchor and managing editor of the NBC Nightly News in 1982. As for Brokaw's predecessor John Chancellor, he was reassigned to commentator from 1982 to 1995.
I've been longing to hear the full version of that theme -- there's been a very poor-quality version of the closing theme floating around the net for years.
Damn that dude at the news desk ain't no Anne Curry!! The area looks like someone's living room from the 70's. It has an odd nice feel to it... It's interesting to see how Today Show was back in the day.
That news in Iran still feels like it could be mistaken for 2016! On the other hand...that desk they are sitting at...OMG, could NBC not afford a nicer looking one? At least place a tablecloth on it! Those table legs looked atrocious!!!
...I can't resist this hahahaha Don't Panic Room! I'm not going to William Hurt you! I only want your Tango and Cash! So just Pay It Forward and we'll all be Happy Gilmore! ......WHAT? Lol
Back when the Today Show was decent Jane Pauley is a Class Act and so are Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry I stopped watching the Today Show ever since Meredith left and when they fired Ann Curry, and PLEASE don't get me started on that egomaniac Kathie Lee Gifford I can't STAND Matt Lauer and Savannah Gutherie is an air head Jane Pauley along with Joan Lunden will always be known as the Daytime Divas of Morning News Good Morning America is kicking Today Show's Butt these days Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos, Lara Spencer, Amy Robach, Michael Strahan and Ginger Zee are a well tight group today
I liked Brokaw on Today along with Bryant Gumbel,Katie Couric,Barbara Walters, and Hugh Downs. Good Morning America had David Hartman and Charles Gibson to go with Joan.
Poor Gene was like Eli in "Its Your Move" always trying to hit on a girl he can't get. But Gene was a bit more creepy due to him "swaging" like Peter Ustinov in Dr. Zhivago towards Jane.
Jane was hot! I woke up with this show, until Curic's interview w/Geo. H.W. Bush during his regretfully failed, re-election effort. Her lack of respect revealed her extreme liberalism. Switched to the hot chicks on CBS, thereafter; which include Maggie Rodriguez and Julie Chen. They're liberal too, but at least, they're hot.
This is so soothing and relaxing. It takes morning news to a whole new level. No network would dare this anymore, to couple news with quietness.

Jane Pauley. Hot AF. No wonder my dad couldn't stop watching Today show when he was getting ready to go to work.
I really hope NBC had the good nature to give Jane Pauley a raise, because I believe that's what she was giving the show's ratings! Not to mention my heart rate and my will to live!

Wish the TODAY Show was still a news show. Would love for them to bring Jane back as a regular...
Wish they'd use this theme still today. Now it's always "breaking news" and shouting it when they sign on.
Back when they made it feel like a Sunday morning around October
The show seems more loose and breezy back then, less fake.
The opening shot is actually Courthouse Square in Scranton. The NBC affiliate in the market is in Wilkes-Barre, thus the mention of Wilkes-Barre.
When news was informing & enjoyable
Observe the gentle feminine style of the day... I will never forget Jane Pauley, Jessica Savage from these much better times
Wow this takes me back to childhood!
Jane seems distracted through the whole thing, like someone backstage is trying to make her laugh or mess up. It's kinda cute.
Wilkes Barre still looks *exactly* the same. That's the courthouse.
I remember "Today " going back to 1976.
nice framing in the wide shot showing floyd's ifb, then the shadow from that cam shows up in the next shot
I like it too. My favorite theme song of "Today".
So many mistakenly call the "rising sun"
a rainbow. Where they get "rainbow" I don't know.
Maybe from the fact that, being a growing multicolored arc, it's reminiscent of the peacock that was used to represent the rainbow of colors you'd get when watching an NBC presentation In Living Color.
"Today" had a much quieter, more relaxed theme & vibe, today, it's loud music with breaking news. 😐
Perhaps because they're both semi-circle shapes. Alot of people get those two confused.
BTW, although they changed the main theme (in 1978) the musical tag at the beginning remained the same for the remainder of that period.

Jane Pauly was cute back then...
That actually is Gene Shalit. Eugene Levy played a character on SCTV named Earl Camembert that looked like Gene Shalit without the mustache.
is it just me, or does the opening theme sound like Sesame Street or Mr. Rodger's Neighborhood?
The sound is ahead of the picture.
youtube compression from an old post causes this in interlaced videos. Not my fault.
Sandy Hill was on Good Morning American at the time of this video. A few years later, Jess Marlow would co-anchor with Sandy Hill on KNXT (now KCBS) in L.A.
She is like you silly boys I’m still going strong in 2019...
she was 29 in this video.. she got that 40 year old lady look down solid
hell yeah. she's beautiful in this video.
28. Smoking 30 Kools before a show?
She always looked like a middle aged mom even young.
Jane was so classy...I can't stand morning shows anymore with all the fake smiles and coffee sipping. A buffoon weatherman is standard now too. I like a man with a deep voice reading the news, too. It's all pretty women and pretty boys and puff pieces now. Blech.
Yes, March 21, 1979 fell on the same Wednesday that it did this year (2012).
I am so sad that Gene has retired.
WBRE-TV28 was and still is an NBC affiliate today.
This was before Tom Brokaw was promoted to anchor and managing editor of the NBC Nightly News in 1982.
As for Brokaw's predecessor John Chancellor, he was reassigned to commentator from 1982 to 1995.
Wish we could get a full lenght of the theme song from this.
Where? I can't even find THAT one.
*What a beauty she was and is*
Well said, that. If Sylvester Weaver saw what one of his biggest creations had devolved to, he'd be turning over in his grave.
Anchorwoman- no plastic surgery. Take me back there.
Frat Albert! Lol, 😂 Gene, you're a card!
Always thought their desk looked "short"
with this set.
I've been longing to hear the full version of that theme -- there's been a very poor-quality version of the closing theme floating around the net for years.
It kinda has that Derek Scott/Joe Raposo sound to it.
Jane Pauly and some dude I never heard of.
Damn that dude at the news desk ain't no Anne Curry!! The area looks like someone's living room from the 70's. It has an odd nice feel to it... It's interesting to see how Today Show was back in the day.
@Ediva75 That was the great Floyd Kalber, who got his start in Omaha and ended up at WMAQ-TV in Chicago.
Can Anybody Upload Some More Today from the Tom Brokaw & Jane Pauley era?
I Believe This Was A Video Clip Of NBC News' Today Video Open From Wednesday Morning, March 21, 1979.
I Believe This Was NBC News' Today Video Open From Wednesday Morning, March 21, 1979.
40 years ago today
Magandang Umaga Po on ABS-CBN.
Didn't the main theme change again in late 1981?
Cute tunes.
Jess Marlow is 80 years young this year and in official retirement.
That's Jess Marlow filling in for Brokaw.
Loved that theme. I wish NBC would ressurrect it. Tired of "The Mission".
That news in Iran still feels like it could be mistaken for 2016!
On the other hand...that desk they are sitting at...OMG, could NBC not afford a nicer looking one? At least place a tablecloth on it! Those table legs looked atrocious!!!
i was thinking the same thing. the middle east has been the same lol
embarrassing profits for oil companies, holding down wages for the little guy... not much has changed, has it?
love that music , can't stand Jane..
This is todays news.
...I can't resist this hahahaha
Don't Panic Room! I'm not going to William Hurt you! I only want your Tango and Cash! So just Pay It Forward and we'll all be Happy Gilmore!
......WHAT? Lol
29 years ago tomorrow. Creepy
....and now 40 year ago.
lol, getting frustrated at 1:34?
This used to be a fun show . Now all there is is gossip ,yelling , yapping .
She's a honey
Back when the Today Show was decent
Jane Pauley is a Class Act and so are Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry
I stopped watching the Today Show ever since Meredith left and when they fired Ann Curry, and PLEASE don't get me started on that egomaniac Kathie Lee Gifford
I can't STAND Matt Lauer and Savannah Gutherie is an air head
Jane Pauley along with Joan Lunden will always be known as the Daytime Divas of Morning News
Good Morning America is kicking Today Show's Butt these days
Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos, Lara Spencer, Amy Robach, Michael Strahan and Ginger Zee are a well tight group today
I liked Brokaw on Today along with Bryant Gumbel,Katie Couric,Barbara Walters, and Hugh Downs. Good Morning America had David Hartman and Charles Gibson to go with Joan.
It’s pronounced “wilksbury”
:025
Whas that Mr.Doubtfire, walking by then?
Cheers.
from,
del-boy
How did Gene Shalit ever make onto network TV? Today seemed to have a penchant for hiring unfunny, mouthy hacks.
Poor Gene was like Eli in "Its Your Move" always trying to hit on a girl he can't get. But Gene was a bit more creepy due to him "swaging" like Peter Ustinov in Dr. Zhivago towards Jane.
was? IS !
