I’m a die hard manual guy, but I have to admit there’s no way you’d get those f1 style rapid fire down shifts with a manual. That is an aural ear gasm. :) Some serious emotion to be had there.
A fun and very welcome review, but what you left out...the roof isn't for weight savings...that is the PR version of the answer. The real reason is neither the regular spyder roof, much less the powered roof, fit on top of the GT3 motor intakes. There is no room. This roof is a matter of necessity, not weight savings. (unless you're going to do a full targa / mc20 kind of deal). As Farrah said…”if you can’t fix it, feature it.”.
I'll take the 718 Spyder or the GT4RS personally, but I get it. Incredible car. The main problem for my wife and I is we regularly exceed 120 mph and we live in a wet climate.
great detailed review, like how you even showed us how the manual roof is taken off and stored. its not just a car review of how fast it goes. great video Mr Ped.
That roof would be an absolute nightmare to put back on in a rainstorm not to mention those red tabs can be pulled on a parked car. What I mean by a rainstorm is when the rain is just pelting down and it being windy as hell that you can barely hold onto the fabric top trying to put in place. The Lotus Elise top was easier to put on because it was a much smaller roof but when the wind was really blowing it was virtually impossible to put on without it being blown out of your hands.
It's not. Pete did it a bit wrong, but it is very easy once youve done it a few times. Not as quick and an electric roof granted, but it's a Spyder not a convertible.
It's different here in Spain it's when leaving a roofless car in the sun, because the seats get so hot in the you can't sit on them. So when parked I would put the roof on, or park in the shade or multi storey car park. "Third world issues I guess" 😊
Great vid as always Ped. Full disclouse: Owner of "normal" 2021 718 Spyder. As a weekend fun car, it has to be manual for me. I find this car very fussy visually carbon bonnet just looks chav, and the roof is just an utter nonsense - makes the standard car look positively practical! And dont start me on centre locks - stranded if you get a puncture as most tyre places cant get them off, they dont save weight and they go milky if you even so much as show them wheel cleaning products (that cost my supplying dealer £1k for a set on a lighly used 911). These are unobtainium so its a moot point, but I genuinely wouldnt pay extra for this. Just MVHO.
I never gelled with the standard Spyder. That 4L just sounds weird - it’s all buzzy and boomyin stock form. A Kline inconel swap for the OAPs and rear section helped, but this is far, far better in stock form. The intakes are on another level. It’s also way faster. That’s why I sold the Spyder and am patiently waiting for the RS.
Great video #petrolped I have never seen you pull so many faces making a video I think you may have enjoyed that. I am one of the lucky few to have a build slot. I have been out in one as a passenger the noise is just amazing no speaker or sound recording can do it justice my current 718 Spyder is fantastic but the Spyder RS is just on another planet. I also think these will go down as one of Porsche’s greatest hits.
@@billnorblat4047exactly. Folks. RS are not meant for everyone … of course as a near race car it’ll be amazing… for a review. Find yourself a Spyder and you’ve got the sweet one!
I love some comments, this car is not intended for high speed it is a back road car to enjoy in twisty roads with a sunny day. This is a toy, and who buy it has more daily cars in the garage like me (992 GT3) this is the pure flat 6 9k engine enjoying it in an open air driving. You want a mechanical roof you have 100 of boring heavy cars with lot of power that are 🐳 in a back road. Different cars for different people. And yes I had a 718 spyder several years before and loved the manual roof, its part of the interaction with the car..I loved it more than my GT3 or other cars I drive as dailys.
As soon as I set eyes on the Cayman RS I thought that was for me. Despite emailing many dealers I could not find a build slot and now I know exacrly why. I had the exact same replys from the dealers when i tried to get a build slot for a GT3. Fantastic cars but I work way too hard for my money to be paying overs. Quid Pro Quo Car - “something for something”. It’s compromised. I get that amazing 4.0 litre but lose the 3rd pedal. Got offered an allocation for one on Friday. They wanted my 718 Spyder in a trade. Can’t do it - love the manual. Rare. NASP ME Manual and a drop top. Almost impossible combo to find. It will be a keeper. But SRS is a brilliant car. If mine was a PDK and I could live with that I would do the deal.
What a faff with the roof!! I'm so glad my folding roof is in solid sections....and electric. That looked very much like the village of Selborne (B3006) you were driving through on the 20MPH section?
Another brilliant review of a fantastic machine. Well done. Also great to see it at your normal Petrol Ped hill climb and then heading to my neck of the woods. This film has been the easiest one yet to recognise the great road … Name that road, the new weekly quiz show!
Great review! Question : 600LT vs SRS, which one do you think a better car for weekender 🤔? About same price in Australia for an used 600LT vs a new SRS. I current have 992.1 C2 cabriolet as a daily.
Great car, great review, you’re so REAL it’s always a pleasure to watch. PS. I went up the “PetrolPed Hill climb” today on my bike but not quite as quickly as you😉
The pinnacle of Boxsters, without a doubt. I would choose that one over the GT4, just for the elegance of the design, which is unrivealed. Great video btw, love all the dramatic camera angles you chose, outstanding.
Just that induction sound through my speakers sounds epic. What it’s like in reality must be truly awesome. Winding that car through the alps would be my dream road trip, but at 220k on the used market will have to stay a dream , for now at least 😊
First, i like to start with the fact that i cant afford a spyder rs, but i can afford a regular Boxster and a few weeks ago i purchased a 3000 mile 2022 Boxster 25 year anniversary edition and i am thrilled with the car. Haven’t driven it yet with the top down (canadian winters) prevent that, but running the car thru the gears is epic and it has an automatic roof. The flat 6, four litre engine sounds amazing, especially above 4000 rpm with the sport exhaust turned on. Although I have never been in a spyder rs, i imagine it is my car multiplied by 2.Anyway, great review Pete!
Oh Peter , the sound! That is addictive. Perfect for some of our Aussie roads. Perth to Albany through the Kari Forrest. Great Ocean road at 2am. The back roads of Byron Bay or the hinterlands of the Gold or Sunshine coast. But in winter. Thanks mate, great video. I get this strange impression you like it.
Lol. The Spyder RS roof is even worse than the Spyder roof. The car has attributes that a collector would find desirable. For the rest of us the GTS 4.0 is the car to buy.
Other roofs won’t fit; weight has nothing to do with the reality of the choice. You want to lose that gorgeous clam shell or the gt3 motor? Which are you going to sacrifice? Unless you want a full mechanized targa setup and lose the rear boot.
Managed to blow up my left speaker. Damned! So this wonderful car is too loud, at least for my equipment. Great video! Oh, we're in the 'no spoiler' camp. Way more elegant.
Nice car and very well done with the roof demo, but that roof would be a nightmare to put back on in the rain.I think I would rather have the power roof and carry the extra weight.Car sounds really good as well.
I certainly didn't need to be taught in great detail how to pop the manual roof down on for my Alfa. Press a button. Release the internal leavers and, Bob's your uncle. The Porsche roof looks nice but, what a palaver. Usually, in the UK, rain comes from nowhere in five minutes and the sequence is repeated in reverse.
Might just be my old ears, but I've found the voice audio on your recent few videos to be kind of muffled and hard to understand at times. Kind of sounds like you're off in the distance! Has there been a change in mic setup? Never had a problem in the past, so maybe I'm just in need of a hearing aid 😆
That roof/hood is a deal breaker. Has Porsche ever looked at the ND Miata setup? That's the best I've ever used. The rest of the car is great, though. Thanks for the video!
One thing I’ve learned from my first convertible is that time with the roof down is to be valued. The ability to knock the roof down in slow moving traffic and then put it back up again when it inevitably starts raining has proved surprisingly important. I covert that alcantara dashboard though…
I'm lucky enough to have one coming this summer, replacing my 718 manual spyder. Would love to know what roads you're using to test as i'm in the same area too! Cracking review :)
As a more affordable investment this car is it. The good examples of 981 Spyders are selling for more than original MSRP! Even with over 20,000 miles these cars fetch a premium price, although if I do sell my 981 Boxster S for one I’ll never sell the Spyder. The 981 is such an outstanding car and value.
😮 Had a 718 GTS just like yours, traded very favourably in 2022 for 992 carrera cab base. Fantastic cars, but the GTS 718 was a better drivers car. Fell like i want a 718 Spyder as i won’t. have to suffer painful surgery to actually own one. Naturally aspirated is soooo good 😊
It's beautiful beautiful car but not trying to try for the Olympics to take the roof off. I would do the automatic roof I don't care about that weight. That's too much extra work
Hi Ped This is one review that did not disappoint 🤭 What a car, and that soundtrack WOW. Now let’s back to earth, this car is heading into crazy price bracket, so beyond my means. Personally I think the PDK box is an ideal if only choice for this engine. The hood would be a deal breaker unless it fitted into a larger car collection and only came out for track days or guaranteed sunshine. I feel the GTS or 25th Anniversary car represents good value to those with lesser funds.😉
Fantastic car Pedro, no doubt one that I would have in my "garage" if I could afford it.. Did you manage to avoid the potholes on the Selborne to Alton road, they get me every time? Grrrrr!, In fact when you said big pot hole, I think that's the one I hit this morning on my regular commute to Basingstoke, that road is getting worse by the week.... Great review, Cheers.
Epic machine! That roof looks a right PITA though. Reminds me very much of when I need to access the engine bay in my 986 Boxster S. In fact, I reckon I could get in there faster than you can get the roof off and stowed in the Spider RS.
The roof is pretty much the same as the origional 987 spyder, only the butress release is different. Very quick and easy to use once youve done it a few times. P.S Pete, you take the rear window part off before releasing the cable. Beautiful car amazing sound 😊
Sound is amazing and the design of the back is beautiful but I can’t believe that Porsche engineered that roof 😮. Harks back to the 356 Speedster that was designed for California where it doesn’t rain.
This isn't a Cayman with the roof chopped off. This is roadster without the roof added on after the fact. The car began as a purpose built roadster. The tin top came as after thought. On equal power and equal suspension the roadster would be faster than the tin top on every single lap. We already saw this in 2012 when J. Van Overbeek tested the first Cayman R and the orginal Boxster Sypder at karting track that had no long straights, it was all corners. The Boxster SPyder was faster on every lap because a lower center gravity will be always win.
This is “the toy” … the car you look for a sunny day in back roads. I will take the 2 minutes to put the roof up/down, it doesn’t matter it is part of the experience in this car, you can buy 100 of cars with automatic roof. This is not a daily car (buy a regular boxster), it is like your best food/drink you enjoy in special occasions. Who buy this car have other cars to daily drive. I had a 718 Spyder for almost 3 years and getting my Spyder RS in June, I enjoyed every minute I put the roof down on every drive, this is such a special car and one of the most nicest Porsche designs, that finally gets the right engine. Glad Porsche did it 👏🏻
Good enthusiastic review - I believe you like the Spyder RS ? Roof is a bit of an issue. I have a Jaguar Project 7 and I thought the roof of the P7 was fiddly - but that is only until I saw your review of the Spyder. 😊
I would have liked a metal roof like in the previous gen Ferraris. I understand it's not feasible with the weight savings, but it would have made it 10x better.
I might be the only one who has actually refused a build slot! Main reasons being, the roof is a complete faff ,especially in the Scottish weather .Noise ,you cannot hear anything but the drone of the engine which isn’t too bad but can be tiresome on a lengthy motorway drive.and lastly but not really a key point is the boot space available ,not enough for more than a small overnight bag.Happy with my 992gt3.
Hey Ped, hello from San Diego! Cool sounding Spyder but really, don’t you think your Boxster 718 GTS with an automatic roof is the right car for the right price? A better daily driver for sure. Maybe the Lexus LFA has a better howl? Thanks for another fun video!
Another great review Pete. Almost felt like I was in the car. Great sound as you said but that roof mech is a bit faffy. Small price to pay though for that soundtrack.
I have a GTS Boxster GTS for delivery in Aus this Friday the 16th Oct 2024. They had a Sypder RS in the Porsche Gold Coast Showroom yesterday 10 Oct 2024. Would I take my GTS over the Spyder RS as an everyday car. Nooowayyy BUT as a once a month a day car with the right weather conditions...yeahhh. They look spectular.
The Boxster GTS 4.0 is the real deal. Spruce that up with smaller, lighter 18”-19” wheels, better brake pads, Ohlins suspension and Kline exhaust and you’re driving the actual best 718.
Flipping heck, the start of this video is why I for one will be gutted when ice powered cars will be no more. The howl of a wonderful engine in a great package. Definitely time to rob a bank and do some deals for cash now we know they’re on the wane, with Porsche saying cybersecurity means they’re discontinuing the current cayman.
Interesting vid thanks for sharing. Wouldn’t choose the roof though, the red tags are asking to be pulled and security is also compromised. Not to mention the faff of using it, can imagine how that looks in the rain at the side of the road trying to get the roof on. On the up side it perfectly represents the term ´Rag Top’ maybe rather than Spyder it should be called the RT.
Manual roof but auto box in what essentially is a sports car for the road as opposed to the coupe which is for the track is a fail for me(not that I can afford it). As such it’s not a car I’d dream of hooning in the med and in the mountains with a redundant left leg. PDK for track times manual for road fun. Nice but….
Great review 🔥 Didn’t hear you complain about the keg room like you dud in the gts 4.0 i imagine the spyder is a bit longer hence the cabin space leg room is better than the 4.0 more like the 4cyl am i right?

Personally I think the PDK box is an ideal if only choice for this engine. The hood would be a deal breaker unless it fitted into a larger car collection and only came out for track days or guaranteed sunshine. I feel the GTS or 25th Anniversary car represents good value to those with lesser funds.😉
Yep 👍
Awesome video, I’m so glad you had some dry time in the car 👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
Great video, can't wait to receive mine!!!
Hope you enjoy it!
Absolutely gorgeous car !!
It really is!
I agree 👍
Love this. Without doubt, it's on the retirement list.
It's so good!
Glad Porsche did it 👏🏻
This 👏👍
I agree 👍
Good enthusiastic review - I believe you like the Spyder RS ? Roof is a bit of an issue. I have a Jaguar Project 7 and I thought the roof of the P7 was fiddly - but that is only until I saw your review of the Spyder. 😊
Yeah the P7 roof is ‘special’ 😜👍
I would have liked a metal roof like in the previous gen Ferraris. I understand it's not feasible with the weight savings, but it would have made it 10x better.
OMG that sounds amazing on camera so must be even better in real life. I would just use 2nd and 3rd all the time and all the revs.
It sure is 👌
Watch roof is faster to fit.
Lotus Elise or Porsche Spyder RS?
I thought that was the road past Ditcham and the confirmed as you hit Selborne.
I remember it was very slippery when you drove the GT4RS also😅. You need to revisit these marvels again when the sun is shining and the temps are up
Yeah. I do t have much luck with the weather 😂
Just a great car, personally i would go for the closed gt4RS and put some SSR parts on the car to make it the ultimate track car.
That roof is ridiculous. Take a look at a MX5 ND soft top in action.
Boot space is not that different to a standard Boxster which is more boot space than a 911 (if you ignore the rear seats 👍)
I do indeed 👍
Glorious car, 2 listed for sale today in the UK at 250k. Lottery win needed and so few will ever get driven.😢
Ouch 😣
Evening PP
GREAT VIDEO AS EVER
1/4 of it the review of the car
3/4 putting the roof down on it.
🐵🤭😀
Lovely interior and that noise
It quite 😜😂
Another great review Pete.
Almost felt like I was in the car. Great sound as you said but that roof mech is a bit faffy. Small price to pay though for that soundtrack.
I have a GTS Boxster GTS for delivery in Aus this Friday the 16th Oct 2024. They had a Sypder RS in the Porsche Gold Coast Showroom yesterday 10 Oct 2024. Would I take my GTS over the Spyder RS as an everyday car. Nooowayyy BUT as a once a month a day car with the right weather conditions...yeahhh. They look spectular.
Is it loud? During driving with the roof off?
Not really 👍
The Boxster GTS 4.0 is the real deal. Spruce that up with smaller, lighter 18”-19” wheels, better brake pads, Ohlins suspension and Kline exhaust and you’re driving the actual best 718.
Flipping heck, the start of this video is why I for one will be gutted when ice powered cars will be no more. The howl of a wonderful engine in a great package. Definitely time to rob a bank and do some deals for cash now we know they’re on the wane, with Porsche saying cybersecurity means they’re discontinuing the current cayman.
Sounds ace doesn’t it 👌
Gret looking car and sounds even better, slightly different to the duster but enjoyed both reviews
Variety is the spice of life 😜😂
Interesting vid thanks for sharing.
Fantastic video. Awesome car . Pathetic roof. I’m keeping my 981S 👍
OMD.....all I can say is thanks. Will call my OPC in the morning, got to be worth a shot 😅😅😅
That roof is an absolute ABORTION!!!!
Porsche are having a bloody laugh!!!!!
it's a really aesthetic car, but the manual removal of the roof is a real pain in the ass. taking in mind the price it makes no sense.
Great video,Ped . With that sound save a bit more weight and take the radio out!
😂😂😂
I would never drive this on a rainy day, as I would never get the roof back on 😂
Manual roof but auto box in what essentially is a sports car for the road as opposed to the coupe which is for the track is a fail for me(not that I can afford it). As such it’s not a car I’d dream of hooning in the med and in the mountains with a redundant left leg. PDK for track times manual for road fun. Nice but….
5m 45s: The car either comes with aluminium alloys or magnesium wheels. Not magnesium alloys.
Correct 👍 I always refer to wheels as alloys. Incorrect I know 😜😂
What can you say……bloody marvellous! 👏🙏
Yep 👍
Great review 🔥
Didn’t hear you complain about the keg room like you dud in the gts 4.0 i imagine the spyder is a bit longer hence the cabin space leg room is better than the 4.0 more like the 4cyl am i right?
So Pete, which would it be, the Spyder with the MT (in your review of it you said it was the most engaging driver's car) or the RS with a PDK?
Standard Spyder with an aftermarket exhaust would be an interesting option 👍
where abouts are the ped roads pete? are you down near goodwood?
Yes. North of Chichester near South Harting 👍
A voice and a half from those pipes.
I liked my TR6 top. Could put the roof down as quick as I could roll down my window.
