1988 में मालदीव को राजनीतिक संकट से बाहर निकालने और राष्ट्रपति गयूम के खिलाफ साजिश रोकने के लिए भारत ने ऑपरेशन कैक्टस शुरू किया। भारतीय कमांडो दस्ते को ले जाने वाले विमान को एक ऐसे हवाई अड्डे पर लैंड करना था जहाँ एकदम अंधेरा था और रनवे की लंबाई काफ़ी छोटी थी।
The plane carrying Indian Paratroopers and Air Force Personnel had to land on an airport with no lights and a very short runway. Operation Cactus was one of a kind as it was the first mission led by Indian Armed forces on a foreign land. On request of Maldives foreign minister, India took a swift action to avert the Maldives crisis.
The attempted coup was carried out by Abdullah Luthufi with the support of 80 people. One group attacked at Radio and Telecommunications centre while the other tried to take over the Presidential Palace of Maldives.

The IAF Mirage 2000 carried out a show of force over the area. They scared the shits out of the rebels who ran and sailed off. The IAF informed the Indian Navy about their position and the IN gleefully picked them up.
Well it was a great support from Indian army.. but it is sad that the report has failed to add the part that Maldives army played, few of numbers and no modern weapons and they still managed to hold the terrorist till we get support from India and ours heroes were fallen on the day?
