Whoever the stuntman playing the old man being pushed over the railing is, landed so awkward looking and dangerously I rewound a few times. I think I seen maybe som cushioning in the floor but holy crap the way the body jars on impact!!
Did Matt have a deep seated aversion to Christopher Lee in his youth? It's starting to feel like he was deliberately avoiding any movie that had him in it no matter how small! Come on Matt be honest... Were you terrified by the Man with the Golden Gun?
Another Hammer movie I’d be so curious for you guys to watch (or talk about if you’ve seen it) is Captain Cronos. He’s a pulpy vampire hunter that predates his more famous contemporaries like Blade, Buffy, or Vampire Hunter D. Have you seen it?
Captain Kronos makes me sad. So many people I know like it a lot but it always misses with me - I don’t hate it, but it seems just as lackluster and kind of half-assed as so much of Hammer’s ‘70s output before the wheels came off. I’ve tried a couple times, ‘cuz there’s always Caroline Munro to gaze at, and I’m just missing what everyone else seems to like about it. I can’t even get excited about the great Bill Hobbs’ fights as I feel like his work was captured better in every other film he worked on. I want to say it was Brian Clemens’ first time behind the camera on a movie and he would have gotten better with his next one, but this turned out to be it. 😔 I dunno, maybe someday this one will hit me right.
I'm surprised you guys never point out how much of a hilarious sociopath Dr. Frankenstein is in this movie. Like how he "logicially" believes that the monster is all murdery, because of Paul. So it's all Paul's fault, not Victor. Dr. Frankenstein casually blames Paul twice in this movie to his face.
I understand about the person who lost his son. I lost my son, Matthew, 12 years ago. Eventually I discovered Matt and Craig, and watching them makes me laugh. Matthew loved films and I think he would have fit right in. So watching the guys gives me some comfort, I've been a faithful viewer for about 8 years now.
@@kimberlydonohoe3427 thank you....and I do mean that....that we (well I can't speak for others, but I'll speak for myself hahaha) are definitely here if you ever need to talk or have a laugh. I lost one of my closest friends over three months ago, and I'm just now getting a grip on.how to deal
@@fletchkeilman2205 I would adopt them if I could. Honestly, I get a notice about a new episode and I'm like, "Let's see what the boys are up to tonight. Those rascals." I don't remember how I found them or even which episode, but so glad I did.
i think the two things that made this film a success and the preceding Hammer films is largely lost on todays audiences: color and blood. These two things were never seen in horror (at least not to this degree) and made Hammer horrors massive successes. I've watched a lot of them and feel the same way - what's the big deal? They are very talky and have very little action. But much like Halloween (1978), all the slasher films that followed and copied the style/beats had to keep upping the ante as far as violence and gore is concerned, so now the original is very tame is comparison and has very little thrill for the now jaded horror audience (although I think Halloween still has much to offer entertainment-wise). I think that's what happened to Hammer - we've just seen it so many times afterwards that it just doesn't have the same effect it once did. BTW the Hammer Frankenstein series was always about and focus on the doctor and his evilness- NOT the monster like the Universal films
Thank you, I saw One Cut of The Dead based on your recommendation and it was a wild ride I was onboard for the entire time. There is so many elements to appreciate the film for. Certainly one I intend to add to my home video collection.
When I heard you say, "I want to take pieces of people and attach them together to create the perfect body -- and I heard there was this guy who was hung"... I thought, "ah, going for the most important body part first, I see!"
I literally watched this film earlier today and my first thought after watching it was I wonder what you guys would think of this film. Glad I got my answer quickly haha!
I never have time to watch youtube anymore, but I’m so grateful you guys just keep doing what you do :,) your videos bring me such joy when I finally get some time to watch
any interview with Christopher Lee: "Oh yes I did that! I was in that! I was what inspired James Bond! I can speak 96 languages! I was Tolkien's pen pal!"
I was 15 when I first started watching you guys, you've literally accompanied me into becoming an adult, having a child and buying my first family home. I don't think I could have done it without you guys, thank you!
Here's a question if you need one, prompted by your One Cut of the Dead Seen It: what are your thoughts on the tension between not wanting to spoil a movie and wanting to discuss it fully?
Hey! Cool - you read my Magic comment. To follow up on WHY I think Wilder would be a better choice: while I like Hopkins, I always feel like I KNOW he's crazy from the get-go and telegraphs it from the start (like Jack Nicolson in The Shinning - there's no build up or reveal, its just there and you know its there). I like how Hopkins played the role but just felt like I would have like some doubt - some build up to the craziness that would slowly present itself. From the very first moment he appears I'm like "I never want to be in the same room alone with this guy" and I just feel like Wilder would have made the character more likable and disarming so when the murderous madness does present itself, its too late to react. That is all. Thanks again and love the show!
Have you seen The Duel (1971)? It was at the beginning of his career, but it may be Spielberg's Psycho. An amazing, very tension thriller made on a microscopic budget.
There was a short period in Disney history where they made some wierd scary movies, most people have seen Something Wicked This Way Comes, which you did an episode on. But did you see Watcher in the Woods? Such a wierd movie. Very scary when I was a kid.
I've never looked at my CPAP machine as a weakness. I see it as something that let's me get a good nights sleep and makes it so I won't die. lol CPAP brothers and sisters unite!!
Hey guys, i watched you a lot back in the day and now i'm catching up. I'm glad i can catch you watching Halloween movies because its my favorite holiday :)
There seems to be a kind of breed that certain British actors fall into: the tall, slender, charming, with natural stage presence. There's Peter Cushing, Jeremy Brett, Richard E. Grant, possibly Hugh Laurie and Jeremy Irons. They all have that and somehow have that feather wild hair during chaotic type scenes. lol She's a super freak, super freak, FrankenfreakY woow!
“I want to take pieces of people and attach them together to create a perfect body. And I heard that there’s this guy who was hung…” Interesting phrasing. 😂
I feel like they've discussed the original Frankenstein in detail on this show; I thought for sure it was an episode but I can't find it. Am I imagining things?
Question: is the cut from Frankenstein's reacting to hearing the monster kill the maid to Frankenstein's asking for the marmalade in the film or was that your edit, Matt? I just wondered whether the cut inspired the similar shift of scene in "Young Frankenstein" to the breakfast table. "Kipper?"
The other "genius" trope that is annoyingly overused these days is writing on glass windows (usually math calculations). Did that begin with A Beautiful Mind, or did I just not notice it before then?
Watched this a couple of years ago, was disappointed with how flat it left me. It has so many things I like but those flat-shot parlor scenes just draaag. Horror of Dracula made those scenes work the way this one couldn’t.
Interestingly, you guys did not talk about Christopher Lee’s performance in this movie. Don’t get me wrong, there isn’t much to talk about, but what I don’t get is why they chose to cast him. Probably just because it’s the “post-Dracula” Monster-Guy but still. It’s Christopher freaking Lee. Weird casting in my opinion.
I know you two normally talk about films on this show, but I’m wondering if you’ve seen Netflix’s show Squid Game? It’s a Korean thriller about a deathmatch game show for people deep in debt. It’s a bit heavy-handed in its anticapitalism (well deserved), but it broke my heart, even though I knew what kind of show it was. I thought it gave the viewer just enough humanity to make the characters believable, and to stop it from being totally grimdark.
C-PAP user here: They can take some getting used to, and I understand why some people don't like to wear them, but personally? It's like a hug for my lungs. I love it.
You guys are my ultimate comfort and joy... Don't tell my family.
They really are just the essence of comfort
Shh... ;)
I love that there's like six sequels with Cushing, all with different monsters.
My childhood
Horror of Frankenstein is the only one that didn’t feature Peter Cushing as the Baron.
That deduction about the brains was kinda brilliant. I'd never thought of that before.
"The Shitty Backpacks of Yore" would be a fascinating P.H.D.
I love that they’re using gel pens, that’s my favorite
Aaaaaaand it’s officially Friday. Thanks Matt and Craig.

Very true-Cushing’s portrayal of Frankenstein is so cold and calculating.

Spielberg sort of did his "Psycho" at the start of his career with Duel (or Jaws even). It would be nice if he went back to a small-scale genre film.
Has the CPAP machine replaced the asthma inhaler as movie shorthand for weak and ineffectual people?
This is spooky. Last night I had a dream that I found two severed hands and the following day this episode comes out.
i know the CPAP machine cold open was inspired by Michael Shannon in Nine Perfect Strangers! I just know it!
As a matter of fact, it was.
