  • What a weekend this was! A grand total of 24 teams of ringers aged 19 and under competed in the Ringing World National Youth Contest on Saturday 6th July - with 1 team winning the Editors Call Change Trophy and the other team winning the Whitechapel method ringing trophy. Pier Head, a superb 41cwt 12 were the headquarters of the competition - greeted on Friday evening by most of the 'older' members and supporters; ringing ranging from Cambridge Max to Rounds and Call Changes.
After the results at Pier Head, 'Open Ringing' was held at Liverpool Cathedral. A grand total of 351 stairs without the lift! This seemed like such an experience for all 200 odd band members in the ringing room, a great badge of honour to take home. Coming up to the Cathedral and then hearing the grand echoeing sound of the heavy 12 is enough to send shivers of anticipation and scale down the spine!
Photos at the end give a rough idea but don't do the magnificence and sheer scale of the inside of the Cathedral much justice, a visit to the Cathedral is a must!
We join a bob course of Grandsire Cinques and then the first lead of Cambridge Royal. The accoustics in the ringing room have a bit to be desired, the back bells almost merging into a giant hum and mush. Apparently the accoustics are set to improve in the future.

If you want to hear the sweetest peal of bells in England, try LINCOLN CATHEDRAL. They're gorgeous! But what a terrific event this must have been.

Very nice video Alex, and although I haven’t been there, your video does help to show the sheer scale of the Cathedral and Tower in particular. Amazing to see how slow the lighter bells are being rung in the Cambridge! Thank you for posting.

I reckon with a heck of a lot of sound insulation to dampen the warehouse sized belfry, they would sound sooo much clearer.

And baffles the throw the sound out. Unless you have a direct line of sight to the tower, you can’t hear it.

Actually if the bells are rung half -muffled they are not too difficult hear (or ring as a non-12 bellringer!)

If I was disgustingly rich I would give money to help people as I wouldn't buy a flash car etc, one thing I would do is give money to solve the woeful acoustics.
I would love to hear these bells but sadly the belfry is way to big
I think I would have a low ceiling over the bells and put some flooring in the belfry as the sound bounces all over the place.
Also the ringing room I would make nice .
Hell you could even put a bar and a coffee shop up there.

The bell ringing room is a lot less pleasant than most I have seen.
