- Tripoli in northern Lebanon is known to have problems with extremism, but many in the city feel they’re being unfairly accused of terrorism. Following years of war and fighting between two neighbouring communities, and the increased presence of extremist groups, the government has cracked down hard. I accidentally ended up in Tripoli once, and on the way I was really freaked out cuz all I knew about it was this documentary. then i arrived and saw that Tripoli is waaaaaaayy more than this community. its a normal beautiful city, absolutely loved it, super nice people
Tripoli was the best day trip ever
What kind of bullshit is this? I am from Tripoli and proud. These people do exist, but are only a minority. It is funny how the media always wants to portray a certain image to create a scoop. Please do visit the whole city and not just one neighborhood before judging us in front of the whole world. And by the way, lots of christians are from or live in Tripoli. The only thing more disgusting than this video are the comments below. Come see for yourselves before opening your mouth. Can't believe how naive you guys are.
Ok.
Atheist Lebanon I like you people trashing Islam under the name of atheism! being an atheist doesn't mean hating Muslims, or Christians by all means! I'm an atheist and I respect every religion! and Rim I definitely agree with you! Tripoli is an amazing city, a small minority is destroying the city's picture and these idiots at BBC are helping them by talking about them as if Tripoli is only these people! BBC pop up made Lebanon a country of drugs, prostitution, gays( not that there is anything wrong with that) and terrorism! I guess the ministry of tourism should stop these misleading videos! yes they exist, but they also exist everywhere else and there is no need to put that much light on them!
Atheist Lebanon haha please explain! what is atheism to you?!
Thank you for that! i cant believe how ignorant people are. We all know media. We all know how it works. I had to say ok to him cause id rather not argue with idiots!
Rim Baroudi
I am from Tripoli too and this video is bullshit. There are many Christians living in Tripoli, and I have family members who are Christians.
This is such bullshit. I'm a Lebanese Christian and live in probably one of the largest Christian cities in Lebanon (Jounieh). I work at least 3 days a week in Tripoli and love it, it is much more authentic than the capitol city Beirut. It's reports like this that make it hard for ordinary people as myself to make a living ( I operate a kite surfing school in Tripoli) why don't you report on that Benjamin? Once again this video is absolute bullshit. Sure there were some clashes that happened in ONE neighborhood so Mr. Benjamin here is lying when he says a city at war.
I am from Tripoli, Lebanon. This is only one small part of the truth. Very misleading documentary. Viewer discretion is advised.
Majida Mabsout Yes it's false haha I just came back from there recently and it was nothing like this.
Wow this mini-documentary has made you unhappy. Guess ill call you Majida Haznan
Exactly I was also confused to hear this. Tripoli is in Libya and not Lebanon.
Subhankar Chakraborty There is tripoli in lybia and in lebanon
Majida Mabsout I’m from Iran and I love all good people of Lebanon and Tripoli. One guy calling Iran terrorist wont make a difference 😝❤️❤️👊👊
I was there this year (2017) and I have to say that by been in Tripoli, Baalbak, Sidon, Tire and the ENTIRE COUNTRY OF LEBANON, it's people, food and it's natural beauty is beyond AMAZING
True, I was their in 2017 and visited Tripoli. Saw nothing but nice food and lots of rubbish but no militants…
This is so painful to watch! I can't believe this is actually my hometown Tripoli, where I lived for almost 15 years!
What did It become to be!
SAD
Your religious fever is the most corrupt..how your dollar doing
Thanks to all the commenters from Lebanon for helping explain everything wrong with this 'documentary'. Clearly, the BBC failed to give a nuanced view of a very complex city.
@IL_KINGDOM ABRAHAM What are you talking about?
Is that a name of a cancer?
Cause I only heard of a country called Palestine.
Think it would have been more useful to focus more on the economic factors. And for your information, Tripoli is very diverse, you painted a very monochrome picture.
Non-sunni Lebanese here. This is a really shitty documentary. Sensationalist, angling, selective, damaging journalism at its worst.
Karl M
We Lebanese Sunnis are not like that.
You misunderstood me, I said that I wasn't sunni to say that I'm not biased. So even as a non-sunni, not living in Tripoli, I'm saying this is a horrible and unfair depiction of the city and its inhabitants.
This is BBC, enough said.
Way too sensationalist. I visited Tripoli last year as a solo female traveller, I drove and walked all around the city and was perfectly safe. It's a normal city with normal people.
@IL__KINGDOM ABRAHAM it's not the prettiest city I've ever seen, but it has a citadel, and it's close to nice hiking trails in the mountains.
@Killikia Productions awful things happen all over, unfortunately. The US Virgin Islands are one of the top tourist destinations, yet also have one of the highest crime rates.
It is really unacceptable from BBC to show this side of the city and forget about all the beautiful aspects of it. This side of the city is similar to all big cities, where every poor neighborhood have problems and crimes (Paris, Detroit, Philadelphia...), but to give such a horrible title, and keep the image of the city hanged between extremism and less extremism is really shocking. The city have an huge variety, churches and mosques, christians and muslims... there is nightlife, beaches, excellent restaurants, maybe the best food and sweets in the middle east, beautiful old markets, a lot of historical sites, beautiful buildings, lovely people.... what BBC ONLY showed of the city is not acceptable, maybe the title should have been about the fighters, the neighborhood, but making such a general statement about the city is not acceptable. Those poor people and the people of the city are seeking opportunities, they need people to come to their city, buy from it, visit it's touristic sites, they need jobs... the media is continuously destroying the city's image, exactly what BBC have just done, it just MISinformed everyone on this planet that this city is risky, despite maybe the good intentions of the article.
I am a christian who lived all my life in this city and love this city, I do not see more extremisms than what we see in Paris, Brussels... Many Arabian Gulf countries have way more extremism, and no one even dare to talk about that.
Maybe I need to repeat what became lately somehow a cliche, muslims are not terrorists and not extremists, especially the big majority of the people in Tripoli, BBC should at least try to cover the other side of the city, and I know that many journalist have been there and saw what a lovely city it is.
“We are not terrorists” as he waves the terrorist flag.
7:58 Typical concerned Lebanese tata asking if you've eaten!
I love Tripoli. Super picturesque, lovely old market and most importantly, awesome hospitable people. I highly suggest the visit!
6:27
"We are terrorists against the enemies.
But amongst our people, we are Muslims."
Isn't that a confirmation that they are terrorists?
No he means to say that to outsiders they are considered terrorists
@@YH-ge8qd You are missing the point as well.
This is not Tripoli!!! I've been going there on a weekly basis for the past year and I've never seen this! People are so sweet, welcoming and helpful! So BBC have the decency to show the right image and not edit their say to your bullshit advantage!
MGTOW Gh i think hez trying to say that these are bunch of actors acting with a green screen behind them which is later edited with the city's layout wit vfx... so yeah cant say much other than this coz joan thinks this is not real tripoli
Yes it is. This is Bab al Tabbabeh
I disagree with most of you here. I’m glad they’re focusing on how unfair the government is to pretty much any religious Sunni from Tripoli
I was there last week
i wish u showed the different side of Tripoli the old city the hospitality the fort the food the mina area
Very superficial video that focuses on one part of a huge city . I suggest you take a look on the other civilized part where educated people are living peacefully , instead of focusing on the alawite/sunni conflict .
With all my respect to everyone who appeared in this video , these people do not represent the MAJORITY of Tripoli's citizens .
Make sure next time to mention the diversity you saw in the streets , on your way to Beb al Tebbane.
Lebanon's extremist city? BBC should consider working on the content of their videos rather than their ' flangrant ' title to gain viewers and readers.
They are future British citizens.
Can't we all just get along too much hate currently in the world!
People dont fight for nothing, its not that easy sadly.
Its your fault!
Ohh... Why did this video cannot get Subtitle...
I'm a tourist and visited Tripoli independantly. Went to the Castle, Souk and saw soap being made. finally pictures by the clock. I never saw any issues, trouble or tension, The west hipes this up.
dav1mic perhaps because you went to the good parts where this stiff doesn't exist. Ben specifically went to the neighborhoods where to problems are to get answers on the conflict. Seems pretty logical as I see it.

"We are terrorists against the enemies.
But amongst our people, we are Muslims."
WTF??? Said sth like this and had fought with ISIS terrorists, and then they claimed that they're not extremists???
and the conclusion BBC drew is they suffered from stereotypes?
Oh, what an interesting world.
Danley L I think it was lost in translation. As someone who speaks Arabic, I understand the intent with the words he used. I think it should have been translated better
You didn’t understand it the right way
ive been to tripoli because im from chekka and its very chill you dont see this at all
I am disgusted at how biased this video is. Having lived in Lebanon and frequently travelled to Tripoli I was always met with hospitality and acceptance. Obviously there are some - a minority of - individuals in Tripoli who would disagree with my western way of life, however that is by no means representative of the city as a whole. You should be ashamed of yourself BBC, you are doing nothing but disseminating incorrect, essentialist and stereotypical images of the Middle East.
Charlotte Banner-Smith
Yeah this video is bullshit. I am a Muslim from Tripoli and we are good people and we Muslims and Christians live together in peace, I have family members who are Christians.
not mentioning Saudi Arabia in terrorism sponsoring list you just made yourself biased
I was dumbfounded when I heard Tripoli in Lebanon, I always knew it as the capital of Libya. Interesting !
Please show the real gorgeous Lebanon - not this bull crap
Joe Nader It's a small documentary about a conflict, not a tourism video for Lebanon.
Real one is more deadly than these see protests & vandalism is going on
Lebanon is a beautiful country. I believe that people should stop fighting there neighbors and fight the real threat. Lebanon needs a president who can speak for al the party's and not just his own. Lebanon doesn't have a president because the side party's have more influence then the government it self . Make Lebanon great again. And I pray that I can one day visit my country without the fear of war. (I'm from the North and i'm a proud Muslim) i don't see a difference between sunnit, shias, alawies or what ever we are al human and that deserve to live long and happy lives.
I saw my house
Tripoli was beautiful at one time, now it's a dump.
Visited tripoli- beautiful city- friendly people
First thing I am a Shia Muslim from south Lebanon and I am telling u not all Tripoli is like that yes they have poverty but not all of them are extremists and not the whole freaking city is like that I have a lot of friends who are living in Tripoli and Muslims and are amazing and I even have a couple of friends who are Christians from there ,honestly u only showed the black dark side of a part of this city u didn’t show the other ones which is unacceptable tbh
Sick of all these groups in Lebanon especially those who use religion to manipulate people....
6:00 it sure is
Hey Ben, I’ve been pretty well stalking your channel. I love your BBC current affairs playlist. I love the Dictatorland series and can’t find the Mugabe one!
You do fabulous work. Truly.
uhm its all false info BBC is all about propaganda
I'm proud to be called lebanese, Tripoli is in a terrible situation it has been poisoned with radicalism and sectarian violence. You can find evidence of this across Lebanon but Tripoli is going through something proudly different. I say this because I love my country. We need a Secular lebanon! peace and reconciliation starts with the truth.
Andy 92 shutup
Talk about the many killed west Africans the slaves from west Africa who paied to pass Liyba and got stolen n sold
seriously guys! 'tripoli: we are not extremists' is not really the adequate name for this! tripoli is the second largest city in lebanon and the biggest when it comes to DIVERSITY how could you represent it only by 'jabal' & 'tebeneh' and stick saying it's tripoli's image thats so fucked up! i loved you pointed the issues these poor ppl facing (economical-political) but it's not ok to only show the ghetto and says this is tripoli! we are a 3000 years of history! and we are way more than sunnis/alawites conflict you ought to show all the parts of the city not only this
this is so monochrome !!
nice mini documentary.
Nice but some details are exaggerated and too much negativity and opinions are displayed in it...
bla bla bla
Video is about London 2040
This is an absolute horrible title BBC. I'm Lebanese and you are playing on sectarian fears. Now many Sunnis will, rightly, ask why you are singling out Tripoli and not Dahyeh or the South where Hezbollah is present. Horrible piece unworthy of any basic journalistic standard.
Maybe because you don't see Shias fighting the army and other people that have different beliefs like what the Sunnis did in Bab el-Tabeneh/Jabal Mohsen?
I agree.@joey Ayoub
Joey Ayoub simply because there are no terrorists in dahyeh and the south! Hezbollah did not bombs Beirut and killed civilians! I'm not defending Hezbollah, I'm against everything Hezbollah is doing and I don't consider it as a terrorist organization! the terrorists are Isis and these Muslim extremists who consider every non Muslim as an infidel that should be killed.
Atheist Lebanon yes I am... Hezbollah did not bomb Beirut, Hezbollah did not fight the Lebanese army, Hezbollah does not consider Christians or other Muslims as infidels! I don't care about videos of Nasrallah talking about wilayat l fakih or whatever, I speak of what I see, Hezbollah is friend with aoun, he talks with hariri, his allies are Muslims and Christians! again I'm not defending Hezbollah's ideology! I'm against every religion party!
Atheist Lebanon yes and I am batman! we need facts! what you're saying is just bad propaganda! I'm sorry I lost my time replying to your comments, you're just an ignorant!
Who is the journalist? Fantastic! Really good questions, energy that seems really real, at the right place at the right time, keep doing you bro! You are amazing!
no
Who else thought it was about Libya
❤️ Lebanese people. And why did this reportage not ask: 1) Who was the enemy the first group kept referring to? Many possibilities, but would be nice to know who. 2) Where is all that money coming from? Just would've been nice to see what the actual people say to those questions for once, to see if it aligns with what everyone says about Qatar & Saudi Arabia. Good luck, Lebanon ✌️❤️🤞
How are you gonna make a video about Tripoli and not even mention Kinafeh?!
I dont like tripoli anymore.
Spin doctors. Media needs ratings, I get it but every doumentary is biased. If it bleeds it leads. Would be nice to see the cultures, you know, food, businesses, homes, parks, schools, beaches, etc . Lebanon is such a beautiful country with a rich history. Try showing that some time.
I was 3 minutes into the video before I realized they weren't in Libya
How do you get to meet all this major people?
Much Love and Respect for the Lebanese People especially for Tripoli from Germany!
Yes u are.
I thought he meant the Tripoli in Libya
I've been to Tripoli last year visiting the city on a day trip from Beirut. I spent the day with a local friend and felt totally safe. I know there are some areas to be avoided, but it's not dangerous if you have someone who knows the city to go with you. The old town is just magic, people are very friendly and the food is great.
Greetings from Brazil!
tripoli in lebanon?seriously?
what the hell do you expect the government to do when the neighborhoods are launching full scale attacks on eachother ?!
I'm so retarded, I just read the first word in the title, Tripoli, and then I watch the video and realize the whole time I was watching it from Tripoli in northern Lebanon, I want to die now.
am an Indonesian, we have needs there in the middle east, such as study, business, sharing culture, etc but because of the greed of some bad people we can't do that, reorganized united nations
His isn't even Lebanon wth
I think that a lot of points are over exaggerated, you guys keep on focusing negative details rather than whats actually true, make a documentary about the nightlife or something good. Spreading negativity won't change anything it will only worsen the situation imagine how many people will think of lebanon as a shithole after watching this documentary. On the other hand putting pressure and putting these potential threats in jail is a very good strategy it scares these young guys and controls them if the people in jail get released they will think that they were right and will most probably continue whatever they started and that would be a threat to the region. What a shame look back at all the videos you guys have done none if it shows any good aspect of the country... whats next?
Assalamualaikum. lovvee frm indonnessia for brother and sssister in trripoli
Reporter is a part time singer for Chainsmokers.
Cool dudes. It great that they changed their ways and made peace.
6:51 where you going bro?
Please stop smirking
I would like to comment on how this video make its seem as if Tripoli as a whole is like this... IT IS NOT. Like you have mentioned in the video, Tripoli is the 2nd biggest city in Leb but what you have shown is only a small part of it. This gives a really bad reputation for all of Tripoli. The Lebanese government is already trying to take the good things away from Tripoli and are ignoring their problems, it doesnt need false, negative, outside statements like this that would make the government discriminate against Tripoli even more.
it's funny when he says I wasn't fighting I was just praying.. and then when he asks him if he's going to be kidnapped he replies "Nobody is going to kidnap you, you in my protection now"!!!! - I wish my prayers work as well when I need protection
at first i thought that it was Libya
@7:00 notice them white buildings, my cousin is running the contractors who are rebuilding these war torn buildings in Tripoli. Of course people will protest for their loved ones to free them from prison. However Tripoli isn’t a hostile area. I’m from the west and I’ve been there many times and yes you do feel the fear of going because of the stories you here about the place but it isn’t like the way they are portraying it here. Lebanon is a great country in every corner of its land it’s great. Love Lebanon a lot.
Why are you showing the uglier part of tripoli
May Allah swt protect 🙏 the Muslims in Syria and the world
I thought this was Libyan Tripoli... What a clickbait!
Wow some more BBC Bullshit, the whole of tripoli os not like this, the fighting only happens in one neighbourhood on one street
but tripoli isnt even in Lebanon?
Matias Arrieta it is there is two tripolis
Lebanon is so beautiful!
This video show the worst erea in tripoli , they don’t show the beautiful streets in tripoli
@@luqmanosman4508 yes
This is a pretty superficial and shallow report that looks like it was cobbled together over a weekend at most. "Pop Up" is a fair name for what these guys do, I suppose. "The BBC's Parachute Bureau" is another possibility...
ive been there people love America
accused?
Religious stupidity might lead to ban in religious intervention into politics and laws. Good laws should be be based on categorical imperatives.
i Remember in the early 2000 Tripoli was competing with Beirut, then all of sudden things went chaotic, it is really sad to see a wonderful and ancient city being completely left behind by our government, and ffs BBC tripoli is much beautiful than that, at least show some images of tripoli and how beautiful it is then go the poor neighborhoods.
I'm not denying that there isn't poverty in tripoli and they need to be focused on, But what you did was purely american way, you just painted a whole city as a radical muslim sunnis, which is not, there are some "strict" muslim sunnis there, but they don't want to blow people and fight infidels, they want some attention from our government and job opporunities, and that guy Atris said that, Maybe applying Sharia law in our city we will have a much better circumstances, because Tripoli has been unfairly forgotten, even though it is a wonderful city with wonderful people.
And one more thing why are you asking about Sharia law as if it's a death cult? Sharia law is a just system, and it evolve with time and generation, it's not about sending people 1400 years backward, or behead people and stone them to death... It's sad that even muslims misunderstand sharia law among themselves...
Tripoli in Libya and Lebanon? wot
Alexis Matteus this is filmed in Tripoli Lebanon it got nothing to do with Libya
What is their probelm??!,
How biased is this shit, I'm a Lebanese and Sunni, Sunni and shia get on surprisingly well in Lebanon, especially the youth, apart from that one neighbourhood, but that conflict ended a while ago,
A chaotic city
Benjamin Zand is one good looking dude.
He is a Zionist Terrorist
And his goal is deviding Muslims.
Yuck, his nose is HUGE.
too much snackbar even for my taste...and I have a bad taste in snacks...
so misleading y/all think they extremists exist in a country as open as lebanon with various religious groups from druze, to muslims to Christians
Hes the best young journalist around right now. bet he didnt tell them his parents are iranian!
rhys ghorashi He is not the best young journalist haha He didn't ask some serious, basic questions here & apparently slandered Tripoli with this.
Now people think that all of lebanon is like india, lol.
So if the Lebanese army wasn't in the city, can we honestly say that a group like ISIS couldn't gain foothold in Tripoli? Yes, the city isn't all like shown in this documentary, but there are MANY in certain sectors of Tripoli's Sunni population who support global jihadist groups. Beirut is also a mostly Sunni city- but it's definitely not Tripoli.
Yes, there are many terrorists and terrorist supporters in Tripoli, and it's not among the Alawites or Christians in the city.
11:30 Allah swt bless you brother Ali. May Allah guide you to the 1 True Islam
under gaddafi libya was one of the best places on earth to live, free education, free healthcare and free housing for everyone and now look what happened to the country after the USA brought freedom and democracy
raV ¿ this is not about Libya so y u saying all of this here
I have lived in Tripoli, Lebanon for a total of 8 non-consecutive years having been born in Norway. This video is the most misleading video i have seen on the city. My experience is in complete disagreement with how this video portrays the city. Tripoli being the second most largest city in Lebanon deserves to have more than just two streets filmed before making a sweeping irrational generalisation about it. The city is so diverse. What this video has done is mainly taken two people each representing a minority within their ideology and insinuated that the rest of the population of Tripoli belongs to either of these idealogies when in reality the majority of sunni muslims and alawites dont share the same belief as these two individuals. Not to mentionn that there are also christian neighborhoods as well. Dispicable.
you guys should do an episode on Palestinian refugee camps (al rashideyie) in Lebanon
Tarek is cute.
Shame on you. BBC with the Al Qaeda flag.
