I just want to say this as a testament to Troy and Pascale and their Free Range mindset, couple of months ago (after a video asking people for suggestions to locate replacement gas regulators for their stove), I contacted Troy and Pascale and offered to buy them a brand new gas stove and grill, I found one at £388 brand new but Troy and Pascale said no thanks, that a subscriber was sending them the gas regulators, many others would have snapped up the offer but not these guy's.., after that moment I honestly couldnt think more highly of these two souls truly living (The Free Range) lifestyle, I just wish there was a few more billion of these guys around as this world wouldnt be in the state it is..., I love you guy's!

There's something very satisfying in being able to fix stuff. You teach yourself new ways of solving complex problems, gain confidence in wilderness survival, and an appreciation for the designer who thought of the thing you're fixing.

    Guys Moorool is a gem!
Like a careworn old hand-me-down garment you often choose in preference to anything else in your casual wardrobe she has been and I have no doubt will continue to be a happy and comfortable home and reliable, reasonably compliant conveyance.
May she continue to carry you safely on many more adventures to fascinating beautiful places.
For what it is worth from a complete stranger, in the brief time since I discovered your channel and began binging on your episodes, your delightful personalities have engendered consistent affection for you with me.
I am still viewing my way through the backlog of your episodes but presume I am now approaching the present so please be assured that for whatever my contribution may be worth all have received a thumbs up and I cannot envision that changing.
Also be assured that as no doubt do all those who are subscribers I hold you both in high regard and anticipate each episode with greatest pleasure.
    Best wishes.

Wise words Troy on not worrying about perfection. A shipwright once said to me I should learn the 30ft Rule as I sanded my teak house to perfection. When I asked what he meant, he replied, 'If you can't see it from 30ft, its desert matter'. He went sailing, I kept sanding. Should have listened. Looking forward to watching the refit.

I really enjoy the practical common sense approach both Troy and Pascale live by. It is certainly one of the most important reasons why I look forward to hearing what they have to say each week. These two are great role models for anyone taking up adventuring - not just a sailor's story but really an adventurer's journey.

The breadth of knowledge and experience is so evident, so appreciate your willingness to share. Continually considerate of your environment, of each other and of all else in general. I totally agree with your logic. I just bought a ,1979 Endeavor 32' for $2k from a guy who started the demo for a refit but already had to many projects. It's not the prettiest boat in the Anchorage but it's solid, doesn't leak and sails beautifully. I'm living on a full-time while I get it back into shape but the most important part is that I'm still enjoying though out the process. Thanks for the motivation. 🤙

One of my old man's criticisms of the Clansman was the way the U bolts that hold the shrouds were only attached to only the deck and by relatively small diam bolts in tension and smallish backing plates and not attached to the hull by chainplates with more than two bolts each and in shear, that was a visit to view one of the first 10 or so boats built that was sitting ready for it's new owner.

You two have an outstanding attitude and Troy's outlook is right on point. You don't have to have the most beautiful boat in the anchorage or marina but you do need a boat that's sound, that floats and that get's the job done. The pretty things can come as they come because your boat is only the means to an end, not an end in itself. Glad I found this channel thanks to Captain Q another youtuber in the US. He runs up and down the east coast giving walk throughs of older boats that just need a little love in most cases to bring them back to their glory days. Many of the boats he reviews are very affordable because they are older and might need a little work. Some need a lot of work and some none at all really other than a good scrub and normal maintenance. Most of the boats he shows have some serious pedigrees and are proven blue water boats. Anyway side tracked myself a bit, sorry. Just wanted to say I'm very happy to have found this channel and I am now subscribed. I wish the two of you nothing but fair winds and safe travels with tons of joy and adventure mixed in and I'll of course be here watching. That would have sounded a little creepy in the old days but now I think it's the point of your channel...

    A sailboat is:
    1) The Designer
    2) The Builder
    3) The Maintenance
    Plus Materials for all three.
If #1 and #2 are good, then #3 is worth it.
Pre 1980s boats are more likely to score high in #1 & #2.

Your sail up the west coast rejuvenated my desire to bluewater sailing. I was just about to purchase a CT-54 that went thru a hurricane and needed a bit of a refit when I was told I need one too....in the way of dialysis. That stopped that desire, so I've been living vicariously thru episodes like this....the best for learning new sailing stuff. After all, I may be able ditch this peritoneal dialysis at some point and still be able to cross oceans. Thanks you two for your great episodes!!

Really enjoyed this Troy and Pascale. It’s such a huge job stripping it back to a nearly bare canvas. But with the things you plan to do having Mirrool bare will make it so much easier. We completed many jobs on our boat throughout 2019 in preparation for going to New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Unfortunately COVID saw us stuck in the greater Pittwater area for 9 weeks where we developed skills in the art of taking it slow and the thorough exploration of local walking tracks. We are currently in Queensland and not sure when we will get back home to Tassie but the boat projects continue. The projects fulfill both my partners need to be doing something constructive and having the time to fix some of those little things that niggle. Looking forward to your next instalment.

On my fifty-year-old wooden boat where maintenance is ongoing continuously, I strive for excellence over perfection all the time. I refitted the interior of the saloon when I bought her forty-two years ago and made simple swing down buttons similar to those on Mirool but they were pear drop shaped and heavy thick pieces screwed from inside the locker. They have a finger-sized hole under the button to remove the loose panel, which locates with a strip glued to its inner lower edge and rests against similar strips glued inside the locker opening each side of the opening. They have served well.

I bought a Kenner Privateer 26, she is quite a looker, and the designer has an awesome backround. She has spongie decks, Currently restoring the entire deck, but your statement about sailing for a year is 100% true. After one season on the water, all the frustrations I had with her current build came out. As a follow up though its also good not to do every single major project all at once, cause things on a boat live in symbiosis, sometimes changing out one or two features can have a profound effect on the entire boat in a good or bad way. So if possible its good to do a few major projects but then go out and have another round of sea trials. Cause your wants and needs of certain equipment can change. Anyway Cant wait to see the projects, Im currently doing a video blog of my progress and let me tell you , whole new appreciation for what you guys do. Filming a retrofit is like getting kicked in the balls and asking "thank you sir may I have another". You guys have great energy , and make me feel sane for wanting a similar lifestyle, Keep it up!

Hi Troy , I particularly found your comment regarding fitting a smaller jib to be interesting as that is exactly what I recently did on my boat a 26ft van der stadt dolphin design , great boat and space , she is beamy at 2.8m for an 8m boat but with the jib track on the deck and a 130% genoa she doesnt pinch very well . We sail on the west coast of South Africa and usually in summer . This is when the SE wind blows and when its up usually in the afternoon one can be sure its going to blow 25knts and build usually into the 30's by the time we get to an anchorage on several occasions we have measured over 40knts this is not uncommon and the reason kite boarders and windsurfers flock to Cape Town . Point being that mostly i end up having to furl the jib , with a furled jib sail shape sucks and thereby affecting upwind ability . Now I have a blade jib and this has improved sail handling considerably which leads to improved safety as loads on rig are reduced its more comfortable and easier to handle .
I do however need to rig up a system to enable me to sheet-in the clew more inboard which will improve upwind ability. I would like to almost be able to self tack the jib. So I will be watching to see what you end up doing .

Troy and Pascale....my two cents worth, only since I watch you guys having fun, and seeming to do things correct.! If thirty foot is enough boat.....have fun on the refit....Thanks for all the great information......a lot of it useful at 7000 ft above the sea. Troy, do not let Pascale out of your sight, she is a wanted lady. 😁

I look forward to the refit series. You do very well explaining repair procedures. This is only one of many reasons I subscribe. We enjoy living vicariously with you both.

Thank You. One of the most valuable episodes yet.
I bought Preceptor for $750 US. And many of the issues you just pointed out on Marool is similar to mine.
I too have decided to sail her and have been. My first plans are the US Coast Gaurd Safety concerns, then 2ndary Safe Sailung issues. Then instead of hanking headsails Im going to up with a roller furler, fix my pump toilet ( I like the setup you did with your tank), and a rewire ( lots of cuts and splices).
Wish you all were harbored in the same marina, I'd give you a hand and perhaps you could kick a few cost saving ideas my way. But if you were you'd be sailing up to Alaska instead of hanging around in Tasmania.

I can only imagine how ready you'll be to sail again after a couple months alongside and/or on the hard. Here's hoping everything goes exceedingly well for you and Mirrool.

I’ve been avidly watching your channel for some time now and you both seem blessed with rare wisdom (I would say common sense but it’s not all that common), humility and a refreshing lack of arrogance despite accomplishing some amazing things. I found this episode particularly inspirational as I’m in the process of looking for my own Mirrool, and your can-do attitude and advice to find ‘good and go’ rather than ‘wait until perfect’ really struck a chord. So thank you. And good luck in lockdown!

I have just bought here in Europe your exact same cable crimper, which I now feel very good about. One thing I have started doing is, once you have crimped and soldered your big connectors, flood super glue into the wire strands ahead of the insulation and before heat shrinking. This makes a plug so it is harder for water to capiliarate up the wire and it bonds the main insulation to the cable strands so it can’t pull back. Just sayin.
