Thank you for helping so many of us feel "normal". I struggle daily with burn out, depression and grief, and knowing that others out here are in the same boat helps normalize not being "okay"
Chin up, friend. It will get better.

It's normal to experience burnout after all this work over the years (RUclips channel + creations of original works + exhibitions + coloring book)! The pressure that comes from this should never be underestimated!! Added to this the loss of a feline companion 😔 Stéphanie, prenez bien soin de vous 🌈

So sorry to hear about Roger. When we lost our little dog Pocket, then only two weeks later our calico cat Charlotte, we grieved for months. It's like losing family. We have another little dog now (about 1 1/2 years later) and two cats, but we still grieve Pocket and Charlotte.
And please don't get down on yourself for not doing a painting or sculpture of Roger - you're still raw. To this day, I still can't bring myself to do a portrait (I'm an artist, too) of our former pets.
I also suffer from depression, and it's super hard to be creative when we're depressed. Good thoughts and ❤❤‍🩹❤ to you.

❤ burn out is hard, losing a pet is harder. We lost one of our dogs last week and the world is just not right anymore. It helps me to try to remember all the happy and good stories - but it definitely doesn't bring them back. thanks for including us and I hope things start feeling a little less heavy ❤

    • @stephanie.kilgast
      @stephanie.kilgast  6 месяцев назад +1

It really is difficult. I didn't delve too much into it, but Roger died very unexpectedly and not even a year after my very old cat died. So it was a lot of deaths in a short amount of time and we went from a big family of 3 cats to just 1.
I'm sorry for your loss, it's very fresh for you still and it will eventually be easier and you'll just have the happy memories of your pet left.
      Thank you 💙

Hello Stephanie. I think it is very brave of you to reach out. At the very least to know you’re not alone and to know how much support you have in life and online. Look how many people love and care about you. I have lost alot of people and pets in the past couple years and I also identify with the kind of depression you are going through. I get it alot myself. One piece of advice that sticks with me about loss is to create spaciousness. This was from a well respected grief therapist. In grief we tend to always pull ourselves in the opposite direction of how we’re feeling, often before we fully let how bad we feel or how good we feel happen. We fight ourselves when it hurts to feel bad and when it hurts to feel good and we don’t let ourselves live how we actually feel. I think one of the best things you can do is to allow yourself the space to feel. When you are ready as bad as you want to feel. When you can, as good as you want to feel. If that’s going to be hard on you, set up some things that make the day to day needs like meals and washing dishes etc easier. Connect with the people who love you as much as you can. I also think that sometimes it is hard for others to understand our connection to our loved ones and what we lost. I want you to know how real and powerful your loss is, but also that you can honor that in any way you like at any time, you will know what is right. When I lost my cat, one thing I did was plant a tree. My thought was that it would give a home to all kinds of new life and that the loss of her life would only serve life. Another thing I did for myself was to go to the cat shelter every so often, even though I wasn’t ready to adopt, it helped me feel some connection. I also decided to protect and feed more strays in the area (my cat was once a stray)… how you honor life is going to be different, but when you are ready to I promise it will be a beautiful thing. I’m sorry your heart is hurting. Give yourself space. Healing takes time.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I want to let you know that there's another person who understands. Very similar cycles happen for me as well - and I've not always found those who understand - but my family has been so supportive. I am glad you have those who understand and that you will take the time to take care of yourself.
And so sorry to hear about Roger - that's something else that I've experienced and that grief is real.
Thank you for sharing with us, it is very vulnerable. And it has helped me feel less alone.
    Sending good wishes your way!

Thank you for this very raw, very real video! I discovered you a few months ago, I binged all your videos and took your Skill Share classes! I had done painting and mixed media before, but fell into a hole too, and watching your videos helped motivate my artistic mind again. I recently set up my art room, I'd been crafting in the kitchen for 6 months 😂
I think as artists we feel so deeply, sometimes quietly to ourselves until it explodes out of us. Then it's like a new plant coming out in the spring after a long sad winter, we're full of ideas and new energy.
I recently lost my 19 y.o. tortie Ginger, she passed away last week in my arms at home, it was sad, especially watching my other 3 cats looking for her. BUT, I've come so far getting back into my art, I'm pushing through this. She had the best life!
Please know how many people you have awakened with your amazing incredible art style! We'll all be here waiting patiently for your return!❤

That’s rough Stephanie. Hear is a 💜 for overwork, one 💜 for Roger & one 💜 for your ongoing grief. And one 💜 for staying down as you need to. I said goodbye to my cat Millie September 12th and I’m still abruptly crying, shattered. I know, somehow it will be less raw…but we can’t get around the grief as it takes as long as it takes. So hugs to you for your success in surviving the depth of love & grief of your dearest Roger. I hope for briefer days for you soon.

Please, please take all the time you need to take. We care so much for you, and understand how hard loss is, and we would rather that you take as long as you need before you can feel comfortable in your art and creativity than be hurt by trying to push through something that is too much. I have recently suffered a similar breakdown - worse than all of my others - and rest and care really are the answer, so we look forward to the day that you are happy in your creativity, and send love to you, and we will be patient until then. 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

Losing a pet = losing a family member. We *think* we should bounce back because it’s “just a cat,” but we do not. It can put you into a tailspin if you’re inclined to depression. You may feel like it’ll never end-and we should get help if it doesn’t seem to get better-but prolonged rest is really good, if possible, like you did in January ❤. The change to spring can also help (longer days). Get out for some ‘forest bathing,’ or a walk on a beach if you live near water. You will come back…but take your time. I realized I hadn’t seen anything from you in a while and I realized I had not been subscribed! 🤦🏼‍♀️ So I’m now subscribed. ❤ and I agree with you that artists’ brains are wired differently. Many of us suffer with depression & burnout & exhaustion. Consider, if it doesn’t lift, an anti-depressant for 8-12 months; it can put you on more even footing and allow you to work through things. You are loved!!! ❤❤❤

I'm sorry about your cat friend. I'm going through this right now as well. I lost my dog of 17 yrs a couple months ago and I've been just feeling numb, guilt, sadness most days. Also feeling the overwhelm of finishing things and showing them to the world, post on social media.
I had a big project looming over my head that I had to present to a panel for approval that was really stressing me out as well that made the time going by almost feel like pergatory and was also a big distraction.
I have up and down days, though at least now. I have had weeks that were as you describe as "holes". One thing that has helped me a bit is creating an index of all the little things that give me joy that I can refer back to. So I have about 50 things from specific foods, to visiting certain locations, certain movies, certain authors, certain scents etc etc that give me a tiny boost and when I feel like shit, I visit the index and I force myself to do some of them. Then I just have faith that like planting a seed, it may not be an immediate cure, but it will come in a day or two after I make the effort and go through the motions of getting better and it usually does.
Meditating can help too and I tend to gravitate towards the ones that involve visualizations versus just blanking the mind. It's still new to me though, but seems promising.
It's been a month. I hope you feel a lot better. If you noticed anything that helped you get around the bend this time, please share.

When I turned 40, I went through the most depressive episode in my life. I even had to leave my job of 10 years. I couldn't cope with anything. I started medication and that kept me above water. It turned out I was starting perimenopause. I feel better now, still on meds, but not depressed. I believe it's a phase in the aging process and that it will pass. Thank you for your honesty! 💖💕💞💗Sending you the biggest, biggest HUGS Stephanie. You are sooooooooooo brave to share with us and the world how genuinely raw you feel right now and, please know we are all so grateful for what you bring to the art world and the joy you bring us all with your work. And so.......yes you have been missed so much!!! I can absolutely feel your hurt from losing your precious fur bear Roger as I lost 2 of mine in the last 6 months and I was only seconds from crying again today because I miss them SO much and it hurts real bad. Hopefully you still talk to Roger? People think I'm mad but I stand by their graves and tell them everything! And maybe keeping a morning or evening journal and writing down everything about how crappie you feel might help? Especially as things improve and you can look back and see what helped that day. It's good that you recognise your symptoms but you maybe need to ask for some help with different things, like admin and marketing etc? There are also a lot of different energies from things like solar flares coming to earth now and science is proving that we are all affected unknowingly by it and that we may feel strange, tired and as if we have just had enough some days and we must do what our instincts tell us, even like just to sleep. Take good care of yourself. xx

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost two of my cats in the matter of a year, Doudou, my very old one in 2022 and Roger last year. I still have Plume, which has been a fluffy furry ball of joy though. The loss of pets is difficult because they take up a lot of space in your house, life and heart, but I know it eventually gets better.
I'm not really rich enough to have an assistant, so it's not really an option ^^' however I think I could be more intelligent in the way I do things. We will see, I will be able to adjust and manage somehow.
      thank you 💙

Thank you so much for sharing this part of your artist journey. HUGS!
I would also recommend doing clay therapy. Grab a half-pound of Sculpey or Plasticine and just let your hands and mind have fun with it.
You’re right, this is a very raw video but I’m sure many of us can relate to what you’ve been going through. I lost my sister four years ago and I’m still dealing with grief and burnout and I’ve been struggling to do anything artistic. I know how hard it is to lose a pet, too.
You will get better, Stephanie…it just takes time.

I do that but with watercolors, I use clay a lot in my work already, so clay doesn't work that way for me.
I'm very sorry for the loss of your sister, I'm sure you will get better eventually, but grief takes time and we're all different in how we grief.
Best of luck and thank you 💙

@@stephanie.kilgast I also think we get so focused in our work that we forget to break away to laugh and have fun, which can take the edge off depression and burn out. Finding a balance is hard, but, it’s necessary. Plus, I tend to be a seasonal kind of guy. I like all four seasons, but winters always challenge me more with my moods.
I have no doubt you’ll find your way through it, Stephanie!

My heart is with you, Stephanie. I had a nervous breakdown summer of 2021. I had to take a medical leave for 3 months from my job. I mostly just stared out the window and cried during my leave. My thinking processes were slow. It was horrible. With therapy and a supportive family, I got out of it. But it leaves a scar. When I think back to that time period, I still tear up. You will get through this. Journaling and praying helped me

Here goes a huge hug from Patricia from Mexico. Everything will be fine, so many of us have been through something like what you are going through right now, each one of us have our own timing, don't despair, take your time and remember that you cannot give what you don't have, not just material things, but also joy, serenity, happyness and so on...in order to share with us all the beauty of your work, your talent, your smile, first you have to take care of yourself. Fill your "basket of goodies" first and when it's plenty enough to share we will be here waiting for your next wonderful work! God bless!

I’m so sorry for your loss. I have 2 senior-aged kitties, and I know every day with them is a gift. When I try to put myself in your shoes specifically about your cat…I cannot imagine what the loss feels like, only that it must be so hard. Especially if you also are dealing with depression to further compound your emotions. I hope that you are able to give yourself the grace and time to rest and heal, and that you have a good support system to uplift you. I also hope that making the video was therapeutic for you. You are in my thoughts, and I hope you get to the “light at the end of the tunnel” very soon! ☺️

      @stephanie.kilgast  6 месяцев назад

I'm lucky because I have very good supportive friends and I can take days off when I need. So I will be ok.
For your two kitties, I lost my very old cat in 2022 and Roger unexpectedly last year. Letting go of the old grannie cat was hard, yes, but it was easier, because I was prepared and she had a long life. For Roger it was difficult.
So don't worry about your kitties, they will pass, but they will have had a long life with you and so when they'll go it'll be the right time. And one day you'll just have fond memories of them and smile when you think of them. That's how I think of my very old cat, I just laugh and smile when I think of her. I know I'll eventually reach that point with Roger, as it already started happening.
      And thank you 💙

I dont know if you believe in a Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ but I do and I love to ask them for help, everyday. love you and your work most importantly your honesty. Thank you for sharing.

Having a healthy lifestyle is very important, but it's something I've always had? I'm vegetarian so I mostly eat vegetables and fruit. That being said, when I'm low I tend to need comfort foods, so I'm eating a little less healthy, but it helps, because it's occasional for me.
I'm an atheist, so praying isn't a thing for me. But glad it can help you.
