I always imagine a circle around the defender which is the defenders maximum reach. I get as close as I can to the border and make my move left or right. The advantage is to play to the opposite direction the defender is facing causing him to have to turn and lose time, bonus time with a shoulder drop the other way. The angle you push the ball left or right is the most important because you need to play it so that if there were a triangle that is made of a line between you and the defender and a line for each of your paths to the ball then the angle should be constructed so that your path to the ball is the shortest and you defenders is slightly longer.
