Yeah I got to do lots of bolt holes in a ton of angle iron frames. Been really useful for fixing holes in plates and other fabrication projects. Love how portable it is and packs away savings on space too. Cheers J

I so miss having a shop with an iron worker. (Does the hole punch, plus plate steel and angle iron shear, and also bending.) But those are multi-thousand dollar things.
when you make your new table mount, consider sub mounting it. so that the material can lay flush on your table when going inside the punch. like how a wood router is mounted under a table. heavy bit down.

What a handy device, if you need to punch a lot of holes. Most of the material I work with would be too thick, but I am glad it works for you.
I used it for a ton of angle iron as fixing holes for some panels. Fixing plates, light gage I-beam and sheet metal is what I'll use it mostly for. For really thick stuff I think hot punching is faster than drilling, I've recently acquired a large fly press which can do that. Cheers J

Hi Again Joshua, I do like the hole punch, however to expensive for me I just do odd jobs in my forge, And I work under a tarp so winter coming on I will have to shut shop. It is a bit of a struggle now at hitting 74 yrs. but I just get on with it.

Thank you for this demonstration. I just picked up this tool brand new at auction for $300USD. My past two jobs were handrails and a steel catwalk with 504 & 660 holes respectively for their mounting plates. Each was 2-3 days at the drill press. Hoping this is a huge time saving machine.

@@joshg8458 Oddly, I have not used it yet. Did a kitchen renovation and a ton of interior work on a 90y/o house the past several months. Now working on workshop improvements before another small kitchen job. After that I have a job for it though!
Do you know if it is possible to punch a 1/4” hole in the middle of the flat part of a 3/4” steel angle?
The hole would be about 0.43” from the outside corner.
I worry there is not enough room and the punch will hit the side of the angle before hitting the side of the angle resting on the die

I bought the VEVOR hydraulic punch that uses a separate hydraulic unit connected by a hose. I can use a standard porta-power pump or, in my case, a hydraulic pump setup in my shop. The punch unit itself only cost $124 US and I had the other hydraulic units. The pump is operated by a foot switch so my hands are free to hold the work being punched. VEVOR sells several sizes of these heavy-duty cast iron punches and I bought the smaller one, the CH-60. The 31-ton punch has a maximum thickness with iron plate of (3-8 mm) and will do up to 10mm in aluminum and comes with 4 die sizes, 3/8"(ф10.5 mm), 1/2"(ф13.8 mm), 5/8"(ф17.5 mm), and 3/4"(ф20.5 mm). The punch is not light but it has a nice handle on the top and is much lighter than the powered unit that you bought. The hose has a quick connect on it so it's easy to move around. For the money, especially if you already have the hydraulic pump, it is a great deal.

Hi MisterFixIt1952 Im thinking of purchasing the CH60 also as i also have a strong hydraulic pump. Im looking for some advise if you dont mind. I mostly only punch 6mm round holes in 3mm steel plate. Do you think the plate will bend, being so light for such a strong tool? and second question any idea where i can get a foot switch for the my pump? If it wont work Ill buy the VEVOR Mhp-20 Electric Hydraulic Hole Punch but they are out of stock at the moment. Thanks in advance. Donal
@@donalregan207 The holes should punch cleanly through most any mild steel or aluminum up to the rated thickness. This mostly depends on how well the dies are maintained. Good punch lubricant helps for production punching. For occasional use grease would due just fine. As to the pump, you didn't say which kind you have. I have a 10 ton hand pump from Harbor Freight that I use but I also have an air powered foot pump that works. I also have an electric hydraulic pump that I salvaged from a wheel chair lift that I am thinking of using. I would use a two way valve, like those used for a wood splitter. They sell those valves pretty cheap all over the place including at VEVOR. VEVOR also sells several, similar, air powered foot activated pumps for around $100 each. I use a quick connect on my hydraulic lines so I can easily change power sources. If you wanted an electric foot switch activated hydraulic valve you could find one on eBay or aliexpress. You might want to install a relief valve set to the max rated pressure of the CH60 if you are going to use something more than a hand powered pump like a port-a-power. I personally think the electric punch is overpriced unless you have a specific need for extreme portability, and it's making you money. Most of my fabrication happens in my shop on my welding/fab table.

don't wreck the tool, just use a bush extractor, it expands in the internal space that way you can add a slide hammer to push it out.

Really cool to see one of these actually operating! Been eyeing up one for a while. Could you possibly shed a bit of light on how the punch advances when you pull the trigger - does it immediately retract as soon as the trigger is released, or does it only retract once it reaches the full travel? I was a bit surprised when you were able to advance the punch a little bit and it stayed there, not retracting. The application I have in mind is stamping designs on to metal, rather than punching holes, so I'm wondering whether this behaviour would actually work. At the moment I'm using a manual shop press, which works fine, but is bulky and a bit tiring after a hundred pieces!
It does it in cycles. You can only get full extension then full retraction. However there is a lever on the side which is a bypass valve so you can control the pressure for lighter strokes. I don't recommend it for punching designs though. Cheers J

You can only punch a hole that is more than the thickness of the steel. You can get dies that are 3mm but the maximum you could punch is 3mm thick steel. There should be other dies available on eBay. All the very best. Cheers J
this or rebar cutter would u use more , the rebar dose not cut flush tho some tidy up work
I would love a rebar cutter too. I actually cut a lot of round bar for railings using a large hand operated bolt cutter. Will do 12mm comfortably.

a paintbrush in an oil tin and a wipe of the punch every three or four holes really helps the tings along ,,,

Hi. I would check my oil yearly to see if it's going dark/opaque, if it's still full and clear it's still fine. Hydraulic oil has anti corrosion properties which is ideal if you do a change, for topping up I use compressor oil which is the same less the additives and is always on hand for me if needed. Lots of time saved. I actually think it's easier than drilling above my head, it maybe safer too as the drill nearly always snags and twists my wrist in that position. I should wear a hard hat with this though. Cheers J

@@wilborth5th Hi Willy. Yes hydraulic oil is best, I used compressor oil which is the same less some additives for anti-wear but I only needed to top it up a little. Any lubricant is better than none when applying some to the punching die. The lever on the side, I didn't mention in the video, is a bypass valve so you can test it is centred without it punching all the way through, it'll only touch the material instead. @@spetsnaz1 thank you. You're limited to 20.5mm with this punch but as far as I know you can get any shape within that diameter. For anything bigger I would use my plasma cutter or rotabroach. Cheers J
