    😂 Gear - the curse of the creative mind - When I first started playing drums at 14, my tutor sat me down behind the most beautiful Ludwig kit - I'd died and gone to heaven, he then proceeded to slowly take the kit down whilst I sat behind it, leaving me only with the snare drum. His words still resonate in my mind almost 45 years later: "There is little point in having all the gear, if you can't make one sound remotely rhythmically proficient!" By the time he put the bass drum, hi-hat and ride cymbal in front of me almost a 8 months later I pretty much had my rudiments (which I still do today) down - and is a mantra I adopted through life including my recent lockdown guitar journey (with the exception of course of the Spark 'YOU MADE ME BUY!' 😂) - Nice one mate ...

    Hi luke, i just fund your videos. They made me feel identified since I'm 39 and been just learning guitar for a bit over a year. I really appreciate all your content which is one of the kind.

    Great video. I've commented before about being a fairly new adult guitarist and can appreciate the struggles of learning at an "advanced" age. i just keep plugging away at it and try to be realistic about my progress. One good thing about midlife is being able to afford, within reason, whatever gear I want...whether my skill is deserving of it is another story.

    Just subscribed. I'm a midlife guitar beginner too. Been playing about 3 weeks now, learning through Guitar Tricks. Before I joined GT I was wondering if I should have done Justin Guitar (as I see you did), Fender Play or something else instead. I'm enjoying your channel as its answering a lot of questions that I have. Going to go back through your episodes on the teaching site reviews. I'm looking forward to when you review Guitar Tricks. Seems the mid-life guitar journey has its similarities as I'm following along the steps you have already taken. I also looked at the Spark, Kitana, Ultimate Guitar (for tabs). I'm getting too excited about the possibility of gear too. I want to get another acoustic and electric and accessories. I know I have to curb my enthusiasm for now and focus on learning right now. I made a deal with myself that at my 1 year anniversary or thereabouts of learning I would then consider another guitar. Anyway, thanks for your content and looking forward to following along.

    Great setup! Funny how when the guitar bug bites, it’s so easy to accumulate gear. That’s been the story of 2020 for me - but I’ve had a lot of fun doing it. Thinking of starting to make videos too :)

      It is great fun to accumulate gear, but for some reason it doesn't make me play any better, there must be something wrong with it 😂

    Hi Luke, that was brill, I'm just starting off on my guitar journey, I play a fender acoustic, when I say play I mean try to play but hopefully I'll get there, as for gear I just have my capo and guitar tuner, picks but as I move forward I will definitely look into what you have shown on your up load, cheers, keep up the great work.. luv to show you my guitar progress, hopefully one day I'll be brave enough to maybe put my guitar playing on you tube 👍 thanks Luke... 🎸👍👍👍😁

    Love your work man. Keep it coming. I was wondering what chair / stool you are using when practicing. I work as a programmer so I have to be careful when I practice much. Can not practice on couch :) Am looking for a good chair / stool and if you have a preference I would very much like to hear about it. Thanks for a great channel.

    • @MidlifeGuitar
      @MidlifeGuitar  3 года назад +1

      Thanks, I probably should look at a dedicated chair or stool, I just have one that was lying around the house ( it was used as a dining chair 😂), the important thing was no arms on it to get in the way 😀. If I look at one or get one in the future I will let you know.

    Hi Luke! Thanks so much for doing this video! I was waiting for this as I had requested you to do this earlier. Great setup needless to say! I liked how you explained the purpose for each piece of gear and the little stories behind it. As always, excellent presentation and I think this is what makes your videos so pleasing to watch.
    For your next video, could you please talk about your musical influences and who your guitar heroes are and who you aspire to play like? It would be interesting to know what kind of music we can expect once you start playing songs fully :). Speaking of playing full songs... will you be uploading any covers in your channel? I know its a bit tricky to do that in RUclips land, but maybe that's something you can talk about as well someday! Thanks for another cool video and the inspiration to play guitar!

    • @MidlifeGuitar
      @MidlifeGuitar  3 года назад +1

      Thanks, it takes me a while to get to videos as I try to plan 2 to 3 ahead but doesn't always work out 😂. I talked a bit about some of my musical influences in my guitar practice schedule video as they are pushing me in the direction I am going. I like many genres of music but right now it is Hendrix, RHCP and Mayer songs that I am working on. These are way beyond me but once I get to a standard I am happy with I will do a cover or covers 👍

    Very cool vid, thank you from a ‘midlife beginner’ too. In the past week I’ve bought so much crap that I don’t know where to start, seeing you with a Spark 40 and a Focusrite and mentioning BIAS FX2 makes me believe I have a reasonable path to follow since I now have them too. Just need to choose which of the DAW’s I downloaded to learn (maybe the amazingly-free and open-source-code Audacity?), then stop watching vids and pick up my newest Ibanez Prestige! 🔥

    Super slinky’s! My favorite...can’t go wrong with Ernie Ball. My dream guitar is an Ernie Ball Music Man Axis, but need to get better first, not to mention save up around $3000. But I purchased one of the Fender Lead III’s 9 months ago and love it. Got a Fender Mustang LT-25 practice amp with multiple effects to play with. Thanks for sharing your gear!✌️

    Oooh, I like that Katana amp head. Don't think I've looked at that before. You just have your headphones plugged into it, no speaker right? I like the MIDI control on it. Wrote a lot of python midi controller code over the past few years & it can be fun. Nice little rig you got going.

    This is exactly what I was talking about Luke, variety.
    Keep this up my man, this is awesome.. But seriously.. what is your day job? What degree do you have? You seem to really know how to do business level work with your blog. Genuinely curious, I'm just a 16 year old from across the pond :P
    You should write a simple song with all the gear you have :)

    • @MidlifeGuitar
      @MidlifeGuitar  3 года назад +2

      Thanks, it does keep it more interesting for me too when I have a variety of topics to cover.
      I work in the construction industry during the day and I just read a lot / watched a lot of videos around blogging.
      Funnily enough, I started writing a song a while back, it sounded pretty depressing though so I didn't pursue it 😂

    well , i think that you have a nice set up wich will last you a lifetime , the seagull is a good acoustic brand guitar wich probably sounds just as well as an expensive martin or whatever so i see no need to ever upgrade on that one , the strat , well those mim strat's are fine and if you ever would want to you can always upgrade the pick ups ( be aware though , this is one off the most common false traps that guitarplayer go for , depnding on what type off pick ups you choose ,it sometimes does not change the sound to much , if you like bluesy / classicrock stuff then just get the fender tex mex pickups , they sound really well and are not overly expensive , btw , since a month or so fender offers pre wired pickguards with tex mex pickups , this is a good thing because there are also better pots in these pickguards then the standard ones that come with the mim fenders , and replacing the whole pickguard is easy you just have to solder two wires , one for the inputjack and one for you're ground ) , the real beauty though is the epi 59 lp , it has al the right stuff in it ( gibson pick ups , cts pots , switchcraft jack , ect ) and has long tenon neckjoint ect , this an epi wich is just as good as any gibson , this is a keeper for sure , in time you might want to add an telecaster and an ES 335 type of guitar and then you're done , you then have the big 5 . Offcouse ther are many other types off guitars like an SG , jazzmaster , firebird , flying V ect . but to me and many other guitarplayers it's about the 5 types i just mentioned .

    Nice video. I was wondering if you were thinking of buying another acoustic? I see you have two but the Vantage surely can’t be included when you have a Strat and LP electric :) so I wondered if you were thinking or have maybe considered going for a higher end acoustic? Maybe electric acoustic/different shape/brand? Be interested to hear your thoughts. Keep doing what your doing

    • @MidlifeGuitar
      @MidlifeGuitar  3 года назад +1

      I have thought about it a bit. Although I hadn't figured on a brand or particular model I was actually considering a slightly smaller bodied acoustic guitar for fingerstyle. I was looking at a 00 maybe with a cutaway, if I find one I will update on the channel.

    As a beginner to beginner - once you start to learn new song or riff, how important is it for you to understand the theory behind every single note?

    • @MidlifeGuitar
      @MidlifeGuitar  3 года назад

      At the start it is not important as it is more about learning the techniques to from the finger positions and building the muscle memory. They theory behind it can wait 6 months from when you start. We are all different though so there is no reason you can't incorporate it but just don't make it your main focus I would say.

    Now come on you must understand the formular: Guitars you need=Guitars you have + 1. This works with Amps pedals etc. Plus a must have, Strap Locks for your Guitars. If you want to do it on the cheap and get drunk the rubber washers off Grolch Larger bottles work well.

    • @MidlifeGuitar
      @MidlifeGuitar  3 года назад

      😂 That formula is spot on! You are right, I do need some strap locks and another strap for the electric and another....

    Minus the Katana head we basically have the same gear. I have a few other amps, but mainly use the tweed blue jr (recommend if you want a tube amp for home). Love the spark for effects and pulling in backing tracks, quickly changing tones, etc. Btw that epiphone looks awesome. At first glance I thought it was a Gibson and would have never noticed otherwise until looking directly at the headstock. I've heard they recently got rid of the wonky epiphone headstock on the 335 type models. The quality has always been thought to be great bang for the buck so I assume they are going to sell a lot of them.

    • @MidlifeGuitar
      @MidlifeGuitar  3 года назад

      Don't do this to me! 😂 I have been looking at a blues Jnr for my first tube amp for a long time! The Epiphone is beautiful in my eyes, they are limited edition so not sure how many they are making but well worth it.
