i seriously think one of the reasons they were so good at academic stuff was the huge influx of common people into the fields and the emphasis on materialist instead of idealist philosophy.
the major factories had night schools to teach machinists things and universities were highly encouraged to adhere to materialist worldviews.
i think anyone who's had one of those math teachers who works entirely in the abstract can appreciate the soviet's focus on real world math, what the concepts mean for real things, and how to understand them in real terms. schooling there wasn't a way of ranking people or excluding access to well paying jobs the same way it is in the west.

Prominent scientists during the Soviet era either acquired their education and expertise before the formation of the USSR or were mentored by those who became scientists before its creation. Those who became scientists after the 60s and 70s no longer showed the remarkable capabilities seen in their predecessors. Starting from these years, military leadership shifted focus away from scientists, as stealing technologies from the West became more appealing than developing them internally.
While they were working for the military industry, they were needed

The stamps are in Thai, not Russian. The first stamp says the name of the University in Thai (same as the English below it). The second stamp says something like "Name of company: [can't read the handwriting]" "Money/budget purchased with__1?534__" "Cost book"__95__ "set" ___ "baht" which means it cost 95 baht or about 3 USD. The Russian below that just says it's in English, literally "In English Language". The stamp at the bottom corner says ""group number" "registration number" and date "day month year". I'm just an amature polyglot though if fluent folks want to correct. BTW Russian might be a good one for you to learn if interested, familiar letters from greek and latin alphabets and useful for books and papers. Thanks for this though, I am always so impressed with the work I find out of the USSR and in modern times from Eastern Europe, China and sometimes India, that just doesn't make it into circulation where I live in the US. The walls between our literature circulation is unfortunate.

While there is some cyrillic script, the stamped portions with filled in information, presumably the identifying info of one of the books' previous owners, or possibly shipping details, appears to be a Southeast asian alphabet, perhaps Thai or Indonesian. Certainly, that adds to the cosmopolitan mystique of this great find.

0:37 “I don’t read Russian” bro it’s definitely not Russian it’s Thai he didn’t see any Russian Cyrillic alphabet before? Russian Cyrillic alphabet is very different from Thai alphabet. I remember the first time I saw some Russian Cyrillic alphabet I think it’s a flipped variation of English alphabet and includes some Greek alphabet. That’s how I know how to recognize Russian alphabet quickly using my own understanding and way.
Interestingly, under the Thai it’s literally English. It seems like he skip this unconsciously and didn’t see this possible direct translation of the unfamiliar foreign language above. If he saw this and he really want to know, he can just do a quick search on online by typing “Ubon Ratchathani University”

this was likely a library reprinting of the original text.
this was rather common before copyright hounds started ruining everything.
many of the books in major libraries are actually these types of printings. it seems this one didn't get a spine or cover so it may have been done by a university library for students to use as a textbook.
