I've just started doing a conversion on a 2012 vivaro swb panel van. So far I've cut in and fitted windows, removed bulkhead, all sound deadeded, insulated, osb floor put down, ceiling panels cut and carpeted. Just spent the day getting on with cutting ply panels and carpeting. Top tip with carpet, it stretches loads, and u want loads of sharp Stanley blades for the cuts!
foam back material, the glue doesnt fail the foam breaks down and falls off. like roof lining on landrovers ask me how i know lol, replace it with the 4 way stretch carpet had mine from a company called VANDALISED they have a shop on ebay can highley recomend them, im nothing to do with them just found great service, with 2 of you its easy to fit.
Totally agree and would recommend VANDALISED too, they also supply the contact adhesive with your order for a small price. Think I got 5 tins for an extra tenner on m order
Brendan! You don’t know how good it is to open RUclips and see your new video and your new van! I just spent the day putting Kilmat (sound deadening sheets) in my van and I’m exhausted😞 Can’t wait to see how you get on!💛
Would be best to remove that insulation as it’s the wrong type for a camper build. It will soak up water like a sponge (condensation etc.) and rot out the van! Look up recycled bottle insulation from b&q (diall) it’s nice and cheap. For good advice on conversation check out combe valley campers on here. Good luck😉
ola Brendan. a couple of things this model is prone to. Theres a design flaw with the scuttle under the bonnet which forces water into the injector area. Check under the bonnet in the injector area and see if theres rust there.what happens is, the injectors rust and sieze and then blow the engine. removing and replacing injectors is very expensive- about a grand an injector. Theres a video on youtube telling you how to seal the scuttle so it stops water getting into the injectors. Second thing is, that at over 200K you really need to think about a timing chain replacement. Midland timing chains on facebook are great- about 450 for this van and cheaper than a new engine. If you dont and that chain goes-its a six K engine replacement. And of course, final problem with a van that old is clean air charges. Youre liable as they arent exempt. The vans are brilliant to drive though and if you sort the scuttle out and the timing chain and possibly a gearbox oil change with the major service, you should be ok. The tvr/vivaro forum on facebook is a great place for advice. Oh, and avoid putting car alloys on the van. Lots of idiots put normal car alloys on with wobble bolts which are unstable and bugger the bearings up. Plus you void your insurance if you have to claim because they are not load rated for the van-dont forget, you'll be putting an interior in. of course, theres the speed limits- 10mph less with vans. You also need to look at insuring the van as a camper in conversion. there are lots of specialist insurance companies out there such as Brentacre and Aplan Thatcham. Viv-i-van is insured with Aplan Thatcham and my insurance was 360 a year with the conversion complete and insured for 20K If i think of anything else, I'll reply to this comment. You got the makings of a good van conversion there. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it and your adventures when its done....no more cooking at the back for you. As always, bessy regs from me and if you need to chat, I'm on insta as viv-i-van goes forth. respect- Kenny
That's the price some of the guys on the tpv forums have said if the injectors get seized and need to be removed. Either way, it's a known problem with the model and a good thing to check. Even 1300 quid is a lot of money to find when you don't need to
Stop spouting "third hand crap" that you have read on an Internet forum. How do "sized injectors" "blow your engine"? It's not even logical. The ONLY time they present an issue is when you need to replace them or remove them to rework the engine. Other than that they could be sized in for 300+K miles and not present an issue. It's lovely with a passenger van because they are insulated. I have a cargo van and it's not insulated. My guess what that white stuff is that it's some kind of spray foam insulation.
Good choice I’m on the 3rd one use it every day, doing loads of miles in it , it’s got 194 thousand miles and still going strong ( touch wood lol) tip if you’re gearbox brakes, more than likely it’s the linkage not the box itself. Don’t mess about with sticky callipers just get new ones straight of. Overall there good I’d say 👌🏻
Check gearbox is in good condition known for having chocolate gear boxes and have yourself a gear linkage repair bracket handy they snap because they are plastic
What a nice start of the new year, a new exciting adventure. The headliners are mostly held up by the lights, so if you remove the lights it is probably as good as free to go. Good luck 🤞
I keep avoiding some of the bridges in Shrewsbury even though I’ve seen buses drive under them 😂 could do with “Dad” test for reassurance. I can’t believe it only took one eternity!!!!
Also have loads of things left over like solar controller, battery isolator, loads of cable ,half a dozen cans of spray glue and various other bits and pieces ,you are more than welcome to them
Love the double front seat now your wife and son can experience some stealth camping adventures 😀 I'm really excited to see what you have in store for this little van B x
Type in van maker and look up all ideas from you tube user’s with fantastic ideas and lay out and where to buy materials at reasonable cost, good luck and enjoy when finished.
Hi Brendan, I’ve recently discovered your channel! I can’t believe the bad luck you have with the butchers shops!! 😂 Wish you all the best with the conversion. Having done a few over the years I personally believe it’s about deciding what works for you and not just doing ‘the norm’ Have fun!
I used to sell vivaro new…it was just body colour steel on the inside….apart from the door card trims and panel trims ( hard plastic). Good vans, you should be ok!
Considering the age of the van I think it's adhesive added by someone after manufacture, older glues tend to go that colour. Most car companies won't add insulation for warmth but will add insulation for sound in key areas. It's normally metallic looking pads around the foot wells and where the exhaust runs under the car/van. From all the pictures I can see the Renault Trafic has always had plastic trim inside as well.

Hey Brendan I was a Renault mechanic from 2001 - 2004 and if there is anything I can help with I’ll let you know. Just watching the video now. Loving the content. Keep it up.
@@BrendanExplores Is there any service history with the van? I've had a look at the MOT history and it’s not too bad, just wear and tear, ball joints, track rod ends etc. But if you have no record of oil changes then get this done along with the fuel and air filters and the timing chain checked. The timing chain is supposed to be for life on these but if it's not been done you will want to seriously consider budgeting for this. Another thing to check are the gearchange cables, make sure they are in good condition because if they snap you will be stranded.
Been looking fwd to seeing how it's going. Watch out for the saggy height barriers - might be a good idea to check your height - I have a short wheel base transit 1.98 meter I don't go in anything lower than a 2.10, there are a lot of barriered car parks in popular places and city centers..
Nice van mate I had one last year that I converted. Most important thing is I learned is before you put alot of money into the conversion. Get the engine and gearbox checked and a good service. I spent months converting mine only to half the bloody gearbox go 🤦♂️. I enjoyed the time that I had with it. Also that insulation in the sides if its fiberglass insulation probably be best to remove as holds water. You can get recycled bottle insulation in bnq rather cheap a roll. Also check under the plastic driver and passenger side steps covers as I had about 3 inches of water in the bottoms. Used to fill up because the drainage holes in the front windscreen scuttle would block up with muck. Take care mate look forward to build. 👍👍
Great to see you have got yourself a van, that is identical to mine, it's an ex motability vehicle, not long finished converting my one, anything I can help you with just give me a shout, I am local to you as well
Hi Brendan only just found your channel and I’m not a big RUclipsr (yet) but I have built lots of vans and have recently started a budget Traffic build too so lots of hints on there if you’d like a look. Including a great diesel heater hack. Looking forward to seeing how you get on.
Welcome to the channel buddy and I love your attitude to not being a big RUclipsr "yet" keep pushing mate and anything is possible 😁 I'll take a look and pick up some tips 👍
Nice video Brendan can’t wait for the next one, I’m surprised you removed the single seat and went for a three seat front cab, could be easier to slip into the back when it’s hammering it down with a single seat. Happy new year pal 👍
@BrendanExplores I bought a vivaro camper with two very nice single seats, but like you, had to put a double seat in for my wife and daughter. It's a massive shame that you lose that back end access, but it's worth it to have a family van 😁
That cupboard could be useful and WD40 might get the glue/foam off. The good thing about a single passenger seat, is you can get into the back without getting out of the van, if you are surrounded by wolves or it is hissing it down.
Hi Brendan. Like you I've got a Renault Trafic 06 plate. Bit rough and ready, but I hope to transform mine like you. Only difference is I'm 73 this year...
Love the potential on this new van mate looking forward to the first camp . Hope you and family had an amazing festive period love ya dad in vlogs you will need to adventure on a stealth camp with him or at least a recon of one ha ha and a cook out back of van meal next to a lake going into end of winter.
Yeh I know mate, it's going to be a good camp 😁. Definitely have to get my dad involved in a camp soon but I've got a lot of convincing to do first lol
Before adding carpet you might want to insulate the van, otherwise all you will end up with is a cold metal conservatory. Which in turn will loose heat faster.
Hi Brendan i got my 2005 Renault trafic over 4 years ago as my first van and i have never looked back, i do have a couple of videos on you tube that may be of some use to you .
I've been binge watching your videos this weekend. Really enjoying the content and I'm seriously considering building the courage the ask my wife if I can do this! 😂
Exciting times, I've just bought a grand scenic to turn into a stealth camper for some adventures this year, your series is going to be really useful 👍
I've just watched you video and I can confirm that the blue material that was round the windows is standard on the versa model as versa was a mobility company that would convert a basic renault trafic for disabled users. I know this as I have the same van as you and I'm going through the same process lol .mines that similar that even the first part of the reg is the same as mine
Mine had a different roof lining than your and it had all sagged so I just ripped it out I think yours will be clipped into pre pressed holes as when I took mine of there was ribs that run from left to right I should imagine that's how yours is fixed to
Great start to the new project mate! Looking forward to seeing the new build progress. I'd change that insulation for new unless you are planning on doing already, you need recycled bottle type or it can smell once it gets wet from moisture too!
Nice one Brendan. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress on this. Let me know when you're ready for some stickers and I'll design and make some for you. On me, no charge . It helps to get it registered as a camper with DVLA if you have graphics on. Andy
just need some swivels on those seats.... not that I've got a double swivel base I'm trying to sell.. I'm un-campering my Vivaro and turning it into an office on wheels instead... just isn't big enough for us with a couple of big dogs.. So following along for some inspiration for any changes i might make
Ahh nice one mate and I think I'm going to leave out the swivel seats as they seem more faf than they are worth to be honest. Hope the videos help with some inspiration 🙂👍
I'm a bit delayed watching this . Nice too see its in progress and too see the counter top 😉 . I'm trying to source another van I need a bigger one costing me way too much in a Diddy thing as have to always get takeout
Looks like it’s gonna be a great build, I bet you can’t wait for the adventures to come with more space in the back and space to cook more good food haha👍😎
Excellent video brendan! Cant wait to see what 2023 will bring and the adventures you will have building and exploring in this van! Regarding the head liner, usually it should pull out underneath plastic trim, there are rarley clips however on some occasions its glued. This is not gospel or specific to this van however it should come away from plastic trim and pull down farley event free. Hopefully this helps in someway. All the best for 2023, cant wait for future vids!
Do not get rid of that single passenger seat …….they make good money !!!! If it’s in good condition ….sell it , best of luck with your build ….I’ve a high roof traffic conversion , 2010 called Trevor !! Lol
Nice work, top tip, do not go about removing seats without disconnecting the battery or you may trigger off the airbags right into your face at 500mph..
Not really... airbags are electrically initiated, they won't go off if you disconnect the wiring. They might go off if you cut it and short the power/ground together. Almost 0 risk of an airbag "going off" simply because you are removing the seat. I would disconnect the battery first simply to prevent a fault code/light coming on.
6mm ply, 4 way stretch carpet, over rockwool in cavities and silverbacked under floor and ceiling, 11mm for floor with carpet. Rock and roll bed £250 and get someone to make cushion. Standard unit with Smev stove/sink. Forget solar, and extra battery, instead just two circuits, one fused feed from the battery for pump, LED lights and USB sockets and the second through the ignition for the cold box. Had mine for 8 years and after 150+ nights and all is well. When you eventually need a new battery, buy the bigger one, only an extra £10. IMPORTANT look at service history and change cam-belt. KISS = Keep it simple stupid. Use double insulated twin flex installed at the end. £1-2k and very reliable..

Horrible stuff... Thanks for the info 👍
If you are going to put carpet over holes in metalwork cover them over with some gaffer tape first as it stops the carpet sinking into the hole.
Cheers for the tip mate 🙂👍
Great advice!
Great tip, but use something more substantial than gaffer tape, it will lose its adhesion in no time.
Something like carpet tape would be better, and would also be great for sticking your carpet in with!

Hey Brendan I was a Renault mechanic from 2001 - 2004 and if there is anything I can help with I’ll let you know. Just watching the video now. Loving the content. Keep it up.
Thanks very much mate 😁 send me a message on Instagram and we can chat more 👍 thanks buddy
Good tip mate 👍 I think I'm about 1.8
Looking forward to seeing how this progresses!
Cheers mate 😁 me neither! 👍
Congratulations mate. Looks amazing. Love the amount of light you've got coming in. Can't wait to follow your progress.
Cheers Duncan 🙂 I can't wait to see what it looks like when it's finished 👍
Every new van build is scary and exciting. Good luck with yours, friend
😀 very excited for you, and to see how this comes along, good luck buddy 👍
Thanks mate 🙂 I don't even know what to do yet but it's exciting 😁
Thanks for that mate 👍 appreciate the tips 🙂
Great to see you have got yourself a van, that is identical to mine, it's an ex motability vehicle, not long finished converting my one, anything I can help you with just give me a shout, I am local to you as well
Ahhh nice one Kev 👍 drop me an Instagram message mate 🙂
Cracking van mate. Good luck with the renovation and conversion. Puck.
Cheers Paul 👍 I can't wait mate 😁
Well done Brendan and Dad!
Thanks Christina 🙂👍
Very true mate and most people prefer the single seat but I have my wife and son so we can all travel now 🙂
@BrendanExplores I bought a vivaro camper with two very nice single seats, but like you, had to put a double seat in for my wife and daughter.
It's a massive shame that you lose that back end access, but it's worth it to have a family van 😁
Have you still got the single seat. Want to sell it. How much.
@@garywalton7695 hey Gary, send me an Instagram message buddy 🙂👍
@@garywalton7695 I have a spare single seat for sale.
Where are you based?
Nice!! I look forward to watching the transformation!
That cupboard could be useful and WD40 might get the glue/foam off. The good thing about a single passenger seat, is you can get into the back without getting out of the van, if you are surrounded by wolves or it is hissing it down.
Hopefully I can make something decent out of it 👍 and yeh your right but I needed three seats for the family 🙂
Hi Brendan. Like you I've got a Renault Trafic 06 plate. Bit rough and ready, but I hope to transform mine like you. Only difference is I'm 73 this year...
Fair play mate! Good luck with your build 🙂👍
@@BrendanExplores Do you still have the single seat still. I'm interested
Good point, that's coming along for sure 🙂👍
Hi Brendan i got my 2005 Renault trafic over 4 years ago as my first van and i have never looked back, i do have a couple of videos on you tube that may be of some use to you .
Nice one Steve 🙂 I'll have a gander 👍
Can’t wait to see what you get up to with the new van 😊👍
Cheers Will 🙂👍
I've been binge watching your videos this weekend. Really enjoying the content and I'm seriously considering building the courage the ask my wife if I can do this! 😂
Thanks for watching the videos Adam and get a box of chocolates and flowers at the ready 🤣👍
Nice one mate look forward to it ✊🏻🏴
Thanks buddy 🙂👍
@@BrendanExplores no problem mate ✊🏻🏴
Can’t wait to see what your going to do with it mate
Me neither buddy! It's exciting 😁
@@BrendanExplores u on Facebook
Exciting times, I've just bought a grand scenic to turn into a stealth camper for some adventures this year, your series is going to be really useful 👍
Ooo nice one! The grand scenic makes for a great stealth camper 😁 good luck!
You need to step your game up
Great project for the new year, rickvanman on RUclips did a Renault traffic conversion I think.
Yes mate and I'll check out his stuff 🙂👍
Cracking vid once again! Looking forward to seeing where the channel goes in future! Happy new year all the best to yaself and loved ones buddy 🎉
Thank you very much mate 🙂 it's gonna be an exciting year! 👍
Good luck buddy. Sure you will have as much fun fitting it out as you wll when it's ready to use.
Thanks mate and absolutely, I'm looking forward to it 😁
@@BrendanExplores looking forward to seeing your adventures.
Looking forward to see what you do next.
Cheers Steve 😁
I've just watched you video and I can confirm that the blue material that was round the windows is standard on the versa model as versa was a mobility company that would convert a basic renault trafic for disabled users. I know this as I have the same van as you and I'm going through the same process lol .mines that similar that even the first part of the reg is the same as mine
Oh wow! Thanks for the heads up mate 👍 good to know the history. Have you had much luck with the roof liner?
Mine had a different roof lining than your and it had all sagged so I just ripped it out I think yours will be clipped into pre pressed holes as when I took mine of there was ribs that run from left to right I should imagine that's how yours is fixed to
Great start to the new project mate! Looking forward to seeing the new build progress. I'd change that insulation for new unless you are planning on doing already, you need recycled bottle type or it can smell once it gets wet from moisture too!
I'll second the re insulation with the old plastic bottle stuff. It's cheap enough.
Cheers guys 👍 appreciate the info, I'll get it swapped 🙂
Nice one Brendan. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress on this. Let me know when you're ready for some stickers and I'll design and make some for you. On me, no charge . It helps to get it registered as a camper with DVLA if you have graphics on. Andy
Wow thanks mate, very kind of you 🙂 I can't wait to see how the van progresses! Send me a message on Instagram mate 👍
@@BrendanExplores I've messaged you on that Instagram thing. Andy.
just need some swivels on those seats.... not that I've got a double swivel base I'm trying to sell..
Nice one mate coming along nicely, can't wait till it's all sorted and see how it works in the wild lol have a super day pal.
Thanks buddy! I'm so excited to see how it develops 😁👍
I'm a bit delayed watching this . Nice too see its in progress and too see the counter top 😉 . I'm trying to source another van I need a bigger one costing me way too much in a Diddy thing as have to always get takeout
Looking forward to seeing you do your van up. Be interested how you use the extra space in this compared to your car. All the best 👍
Cheers Paul, I can't wait to see it progress mate 🙂. Feels like heaven compared to the car 🤣
`Great start Brendan - happy new year mate
Cheers Terry and to you mate 🙂👍
Looks like it’s gonna be a great build, I bet you can’t wait for the adventures to come with more space in the back and space to cook more good food haha👍😎
Excellent video brendan! Cant wait to see what 2023 will bring and the adventures you will have building and exploring in this van!
Regarding the head liner, usually it should pull out underneath plastic trim, there are rarley clips however on some occasions its glued. This is not gospel or specific to this van however it should come away from plastic trim and pull down farley event free. Hopefully this helps in someway.
All the best for 2023, cant wait for future vids!
Cheers buddy, thanks for the tips 🙂 I'll take a closer look soon 👍
Hi Brendan I know a lot about your van
Nice to see u bk xx
Thanks Tyra 😁
Thanks
Thank you very much mate 😁👍 really appreciate that! 🙏
You are welcome mate.
Happy new year my friend Nuno Portugal
Thank you mate, have a good one!
I would make sure as you outline the engine and chasis is OK before spending any money on the build. Get the old man to do all the hard work. Lol
Yeh your right 👍 I've gone on a few journeys now and it's running lovely 🙂 just gotta keep my fingers crossed 🤞
you need a cb radio in the van for emergancy .
Not a bad idea mate 🙂👍
Have you thought about insulation? Just used a company called dodo mat on my camper, would recommend them for all insulation on the van
I'll take a look at them mate 👍 thanks for the tip 🙂
Do not get rid of that single passenger seat …….they make good money !!!! If it’s in good condition ….sell it , best of luck with your build ….I’ve a high roof traffic conversion , 2010 called Trevor !! Lol
Cheers for the heads up mate 👍 appreciate that. A few people have mentioned the seat to be fair 🙂
Any issues with the interiors. Liam would know.he does the best 👌 van Interiors
Thanks for the tip 🙂
He’s back
I'm back buddy! 😁
Nice work, top tip, do not go about removing seats without disconnecting the battery or you may trigger off the airbags right into your face at 500mph..
Cheers mate 👍 we didn't disconnect this time but we will definitely make sure we do next time
Not really... airbags are electrically initiated, they won't go off if you disconnect the wiring.
In ireland the campervan nsurance companies insist a low roof campervan can only have 2 front seats not 3
