    This is the same thing that happens when my mother & law swims parallel to the beach.

    This is not displacement. Displacement is a measure of the ship's weight. This effect is actually a depression wake that forms on the leading edge of the bow wave. It becomes severe in narrow, shallow shipping channels.

      Why is the depression caused? As far as I can think is ship creating some sort of low pressure area under it, sucking water from the sides. But I still don't understand it fully.

    When big ships pass like that why does the water do that?

    • @kentuckypausal
      @kentuckypausal 3 года назад +3

      i was thinking its because the propeller pulls water (like its sucking ) then expels them from behind to create thrust. so all that water below the ship is forced towards the aft. and the surrounding water compensates that loss .thus making the shoreline ahead of the ship shallower. and as it passes everything returned to normal

    Where is this? I'm on oregon coast and it just isn't possible for boats to be that close to shore. We have huge rocks that eat ships.

      Fort lauderdale port water is shallow so it is more noticeable but you have to be there at the perfect time to cathc the tide

    The ship blocks the course of the waves to the shore, thats not displacement
