I have played and beat every Zelda clone you mention. By far my favorite is Golden Axe Warrior. It is criminally underrated. I wish more people would give it a chance.
7:02 "...so you're gonna want to make sure you pick it up before it escalates in price." Which means grab it in the next 5 minutes, because it was just featured on Game Sack!!! LOL
I found it for $12 at Gamestop... but I couldn't get into it as it lacked the polish that Zelda has. I know that was the style they were going for, but I wasn't impressed.
Zelda didn't come out of nowhere either, as Nintendo wants you to believe... It is heavily based on previous games too, just improving the formula in some aspects. I always felt sorry for ¿Crusader or Centy? (Soleil for me). Me and my friends appreciated this game quite much and I did enjoy it as a kid in my Mega Drive. Honestly, it has some Zelda elements but also many original aspects and stands on its own. It deserves more love. SNES may have more/better RPGs overall, but I have the feeling that the Genesis' ones are very much overlooked, specially real time RPGs (sometimes it seems there is only Phantasy Star and Shinning Force). Crusader of Centy/Soleil, Story of Thor, Light Crusader or Landstalker, among others, are great games we totally loved by then which are rarely mentioned.
Yeah I remember borrowing Soliel (as it was called in New Zealand) off a friend when i was 13. Was a great game. The animals giving you special abilities was quite a nice touch. My only complaint really was that I thought it was too easy. I think I finished it within 3 days. Also a little known fact: The game Alundra on ps1 was a sequel to Landstalker.
[Coury] Had a chance to play Osman (Cannon Dancer) at MAGFest this year and thought it was just amazing. Can't believe it never got a release anywhere else.
Saying Golden Axe Warrior ripped off Zelda would be polite. Way too close to be just an inspiration. Great video, as always! Love me the Krion Conquest.
@@hardworkingsloth He said he doesn't have enough time for, Game Sack, Family, and work. So he stepped away from Game Sack. He still has been in a cameo or two. I assume he is still around somewhere. :V
My biggest problem with Playstation All Stars that I was a little surprised they didn't bring it up was that the Super Moves are the ONLY way to kill your opponent. It just gets really repetitive that every character can only defeat an opponent in one of three ways.
That's what kept me from getting it myself. Not only are you limited to three kill moves, all the second and third level supers do is widen your opportunity to get the same kill. Saving up for 2/3rds of an entire match only to flub that full super's effect would be insanely disheartening and make me never want to do anything except the quick first levels. At least with normal Smash, A LOT of the moves can be kills if you set them up right and damage your opponent enough. But that also ties into another problem: Why bother smacking around my opponent so much if damage doesn't do anything to them besides knockback that doesn't matter because sending them flying will never kill them? They don't even get satisfying kill animations, just "Oh he got hit by it? Tiny blue explosion, pop out of existence" LIKE WHAT THE HELL YOU MAKE KILLING BLOWS IN FIGHTING GAMES LOOK POWERFUL, NOT SHRUG 'EM OFF.
Agreed. Like I remember playing one match against my friend where I was Big Daddy, so I used the Level 3 attack which like floods the stage and makes all your attacks instant kills...except he was still faster than me, so he just avoided me until my attack wore off, leaving me with no method of killing him, then he killed me with a Level 1 finisher. It was so disappointing. It's just kind of a shame that the biggest way they tried to be different from Smash ended up being one of the biggest problems I have with the game. And I mean...I LIKE having the three different kinds of finishing moves, I just don't think they should have been the ONLY way to defeat an opponent. It also made all of the items incredibly useless. Like "Oh boy, with this item I can save up energy for my super attack in a slightly different way." that's not satisfying. I wanted moments like "Oh snap, he's got a home run bat..."
It's not even like the whole "Can only be defeated with super attacks" concept can't work. Dissidia pulls it off beautifully. But then that game fleshed out the concept by first allowing you to use super moves at any time with them simply being grandiose moves with lots of startup and cooldown lag(Which makes them SIGNIFICANTLY more satisfying to hit with) and by pairing it up with the Bravery system that gave value to the smaller, faster attacks by making them your means of building up the potency of your supers and in some cases even allowing you to seamlessly link into your supers for one big flashy combo and that's without mentioning the Dragonball Z-esq pursuit system and the general razzle-dazzle that Squenix is known for. Playstation All-Stars just doesn't have that same level of conveyance and impact. Even in Smash Bros. if you hit someone, you KNEW you hit them. The crowd would go wild and the characters would make some anguished squeal as they'd go flying like a ragdoll shaped baseball. The better you did, the more spectacular the impacts would become until you get to the point that Peach could give someone a slap on the cheek and they'd rocket off like they just got hit in the face with a nuke. Their heart is in the right place, but it's all just noise with no substance. And that's terrible.
Brilliant and great Gamesack episode, i love it! Please make a part two of this guys, i would love to see more regarding this subject. Thanks for your hard work and another awesome Gamesack video!
+MrSlashStudios Sorry about that. I just had a talk with all other RUclips channels that cover retro games. We decided to stop doing shows so we don't "jack up the price". Shows like this simply should not exist.
This is, in my opinion, one of the best Game Sack episodes so far. Most of the games included here are really good and the way you guys are showcasing them is just too entertaining and informative at the same time. I loved the ending sequence too. Can't wait for the next episode!
I think you should make another Copycat episode, with Sonic Clones, other smash clones (like the Cartoon Network fighters, Jump Superstars, that JUMP game for Gamecube that crosses over Naruto & DBZ), How Vexx copied Mario Sunshine, etc
FINALLY AFTER ALL THIS TIME! I have finally found a competent video where instead of just downright bashing these games you explain how they are similar but are still difrent enough. The amount of videos where i have seen "rip off" being used in the wrong context would really irk me. Thank you.
There was a Ghost Rider game on PS2 that was a pretty solid God of War clone. As for Smash there are quite a couple of clones like DreamMix TV World Fighter, Jump Super and Ultimate Stars, and a whole bunch more.
My anime-obsessed 12-year-old self played a shit ton of Jump Super Stars. It's the only game I ever imported, and I couldn't understand any of the text, but I still had a great time!
@Pepsi Man - you forgot (well Dave missed) Battle Stadium D.O.N., (glad you mentioned Dream Mix TV (come on Dave, Optimus Prime (aka Convoy) vs Simon Belmont....) and there are a ton of others that could be added as well (Naruto GC JPN-only games) and some others that are similar (with mash ups like Jump V stars, just not side scrolling)
I love this show. So many online video game reviewers have a gimmick, like pretending to be angry or something. I don't hate that, but it's so good to watch normal people talk normally about interesting things.
This one was great. It's nice looking at the classics from our childhood that we know and love but this time you've shown me a few more obscure games I'd never have considered otherwise. Can't wait to play them, thanks!
Avery Jenson it's funny how nobody made a 16 bit great Zelda kinda Link to the past, with a more epic story and with a better graphics, whoever make that game will be making a lot of money
Uh-oh, you said that Smash Bros is basic...Brace yourselves for the Smash fans to storm in with their pitchforks claiming it's in the same realm of complexity as developing nanotechnology.
+Asteria technically it's as complex as you want it to be with all of the little glitches, techniques, and other shit that competitive players use. Other than that, yeah it's pretty simple.
Glad to see you cover 3D Dot Game Heroes. It's definitely more of an homage than a clone and has a bunch of references & jokes based on other 8- and 16-bit JRPG's.
8 Eyes is really fun once you take the time to learn the gameplay and strange controls. Especially awesome on 2 players with one person controlling Orin and the other controlling Cutrus.
GamerNRetro Exactly, it's even called "Super Contra" in Japan and the Arcade version. It was shortned to Super C on the NES versions because whatever was the reason.
DAMN THAT DAAAAAVE! Ha ha ha. Speaking of Dave... I really enjoyed Dante's Inferno, too. Sure, the symbolism & imagery might have ruffled a few feathers, but the gameplay was comfortably familiar and responsive. I still replay it every now and again.

It was nice to see a video on this topic. Personally I enjoy these style of games. A few others that I like include: Gauntlet - Dungeon Explorer Tetris - Puzzled R-Type - Pulstar Joust - Balloon Fight
Smash is way deeper as a fighter than you think, specially Melee. The amount of technique and complexity in the game is just hidden with the game being all casual and simple looking.
+Erik Ramirez its funny cause it feels like even the original creators of Smash Bros didnt design it to be a fighting game. It was always meant to be a fun multiplayer game. It wasn't until Smash Wii U that it felt like they were catering to the competitive Smash community. I like playing it both ways, competitively and for fun with items.
+MarceloOmegaAGDM Is it just the Brawl community that disagrees or the regular Smash community. You know, the ones that play Brawl and only Brawl. The ones that still wont play Wii U Smash.
Not mentioning CastleVania Lords of Shadow as a God of War copycat was a shock omission when you went straight into CastleVania games afterwards. Perfect bridge!
What I love about 3D Dot Game Heroes are the variety of characters to choose from, or you can create your own character, so there's definitely lots of replay value. I bought my copy for $10 but I could see this game going up in price in the futute.
The end of your episodes is great. I like the humourous fight between two type of gamers. Started learning english by listenning your great videos... it's a fun way to understand. As i see from your show... french-canada have a very different point of view and games available than the rest of America. It's great.
Cocoron for famicom is reminiscent of mega man, but you create your character. Instead of earning boss powers though, it lets you make another character to change up your stats. Each part has different stats.
just a disclaimer, but almost every single 'copycat' game they mentioned in this video are already expensive with prices only rising. Golden Axe Warrior for example is one of the most expensive Master System games out there. For the average gamer who just wants to play these games, play them on a flashcart or an emulator, THEN decide if you want to shell out well over $100 per game - some of them much more than that even.
@Game Sack, you do realize that Holy Diver was really about Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads, and Zakk Wylde, right? Another great episode. And Joe, disorientate isn't a word, just use disorient, disoriented, and disorientation. :P
Every time I watch your videos, guys, I want to go out and play at least half of the games you mention. Then I remember that I'm supremely lazy and can just enjoy a few more Game Sack episodes. P.S. - Not done the episode, but I'm going to go waaay out on a limb here and say great job on another episode.
GREAT episode guys. This is really going to help people find kick ass games that are similar to some old school favorites. I haven't heard of any of them either! BTW, nice ending as always, #DamnThatDave
Speaking of Smash Bros, Battle Stadium D.O.N and Dream Mix TV World Fighters are both clones of it that feature characters from lots of different franchises, they were Japan only though. Pretty fun games as well.
I have played and beat every Zelda clone you mention. By far my favorite is Golden Axe Warrior. It is criminally underrated. I wish more people would give it a chance.

Osman was directed by the creator of Strider himself and intended as an actual spiritual successor, as was the Square-published Moon Diver on the PS3.
who the hell went full Phil Spector on the intro? Never go full Phil Spector.
I miss the old intro.
+moviemetalhead What do you miss about the old intro? The new one really isn't much different.
+Game Sack See wall of sound. It was distinct and charming, now it's overloaded.
Douglas Estep
I'm afraid I still do not understand. Same number of instrument tracks in the song.
+Game Sack Still not sure if you're trolling Joe :)
It was nice to see a video on this topic. Personally I enjoy these style of games. A few others that I like include:
Gauntlet - Dungeon Explorer
Tetris - Puzzled
R-Type - Pulstar
Joust - Balloon Fight
Smash is way deeper as a fighter than you think, specially Melee. The amount of technique and complexity in the game is just hidden with the game being all casual and simple looking.
ugh, I knew someone was gonna bring this up.
btw smash is not a fighter.
A good chunk of the fighting game community, even the ones that don't play smash, disagree.
+MarceloOmegaAGDM Is it just the Brawl community that disagrees or the regular Smash community. You know, the ones that play Brawl and only Brawl. The ones that still wont play Wii U Smash.
Congratulations, your show is amazing. I have watched it since I discovered, keep going with the good work.
I love this episode thanks Dave and Joe!!
It's nice to see you guys cover some more obscure copycat games & not infamous ones like Bubsy.
Great video guys.
Good job changing up reviews of games you previously covered.
Glad you mentioned Dio in the Holy Diver segment, you were about to be ostracized by metal fans by calling him "some dude."
You guys are one of my absolute favorite channels on RUclips! Keep up the great work!
Seriously, it's channels like this that inspired me to own some of the more obscure systems like the Master System and PC Engine. Thanks guys!
This is actually a really informative video, alot of these games seem super fun.
So glad you made this episode. And another big two thumbs up from another Dante fan
3D Dot Game Heroes had the ability to create or download alternate models for your character... pretty cool feature
I know the last was only a few episodes ago, but I really can't wait for your next Homebrew and Hacks episode. Keep up the good work! :D
I've been watching this channel for days now..I love it..thanks for the great videos
should have a follow up to this episode! really enjoyed it!
A very enjoyable episode. Thanks guys!
just a disclaimer, but almost every single 'copycat' game they mentioned in this video are already expensive with prices only rising.
love the game sack. you guys are the best!
these guys deserve 1 million + subscribers
thanks for another great episode guys!
Holy Diver is awesome, RIP Dio. And I liked 8 Eyes as a kid.
This is definitely a topic you guys should cover again. There are so many clones out there.
Great episode as usual. Thanks, guys!
classic sack. thanks for the cool retro games; as always
