I tried a few. Disk Genuis i think is the best for PC. Because it's a full blown partitioner, Disk imager, Data recovery tool. Etc. it does pretty much anything you'd need to do with a Hard Drive. Disk Drill is also very good. I'm using Disk Drill right now on a drive who's partition table has become corrupted. 100% recovery success on that drive with Disk Drill. I like all the additional features of Disk Genius though.
Well.... for giggles, I tried the pro on my laptop's hard drive, and it's seeing everything I've forgotten I've ever deleted. Hard Disk? No. As long as it hasn't been overwritten it can be recovered. SSD's and flash based media can theoretically loose charge over time making the data unrecoverable.

Hi Andrew. Windows started running chkdsk on my 8TB drive every time it restarted (updates etc). I bought a new 8TB drive, shutdown windows, plugged it in and rebooted. Windows still shows the old drive - all the folders are present, and file names, but most of the files can't be opened - they are marked as corrupt. I have tried all of the tools you recommended and quite some more - none of them claim to have found anything so far (0 files). They all do say one thing along the lines of - "A device which does not exist was specified " and Error 433. I am wondering whether any of the DR tools out there can start with a device you can see in file manager, see usually be seen in disc management (not when some tools are scanning) and recover the data? Your advice will be greatly appreciated!

Alas, you need a Mac computer for that and the smartphone needs to be rooted too. If you would like to scan your SD card, you need to extract it from the device and scan it on your computer directly.
