Mick - you are a life saver. I only watched the bit specific to reattaching the counter balance spring or the “spring of death” as you rightly call it. Because I already had all of the under deck removed. I attached the spring the other way around and used the front of the more as a pivot point but otherwise followed as you had recommended. It worked like a charm and meant I could use the bolt and washer to tease the spring into place rather that risk a digit. If you are ever around Newquay, I’ll buy you a beer or 3. Incidentally, for anyone else contemplating replacing the left hand roller support bracket (part 410002), the replacements are significantly more substantial. The one I took off weighed 184 grams, the genuine replacement weighed 489!
No worries mate .. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
what a great video. my 41 has exactly the same problem and I was thinking it was game over.
Hope this video has helped
Thanks Mick. Incredible video and has helped me out a lot. I appreciate the effort you have gone to. Just need to change the roller now.
Your garden is looking like Elkskin's!
I have just bought this exact model Mick so I am well chuffed with this video as it gives a great overview of my new lawnmower. Thanks for all your excellent advice and videos - first class as always. Hope the wee man is doing good🤟
Hi Paul.. yeah they are not a bad mower.. they do have one or two problems but I have videos to cover the faults..
Good job. But I don’t think I would like working on that type of mower. But money talks. Great video.
Yeah .. but when they sell for £300 a go it's worth the hassle
Good work mick especially on that tension spring to mount on that tab 👏 glad that the drive works now
Used your hammer and paracord technique for installing the height adjuster spring today - worked first time almost effortless! (Unlike all of yesterdays failed attempts 😅) Thanks Mick - brilliant videos!
Your welcome mate ....
Love your videos Mick, I just serviced two honda HRB 475's was a massive learning curve because one gearbox needed a dog clutch and new gears, which I'd never done before, just serviced a hayter 56 too, haven't done one of these yet but this video has prepared me for if I ever do get one, thanks 👍
Your welcome mate
Heard you all the way
Still watching but had to wonder, when the same part is broken on 3 comparable machines it sounds like a design issue. You should treat those like spark plugs and keep a bunch on hand. 😆
I wonder if the bracket says “Torch” on it.
@@billshedd55 lol
Wow that was one heck of a process. Good job on the video.
Thanks mate
Thank you sir !enjoyed the lesson !
No worries
What a fantastic video.
Absolutely spot on.
I have 2 Hayters..👍💯👍💯👍💯
Hope the video helps
excellent work Mick
Thanks mate
Thanks for another great video Mick. This really baffled me with the bounce till i saw this. Well explained too like all your videos are
Thanks mate
Video was very informative Mick
Thanks cupcake
Nice machine Mick and a really good fix
Thanks Nev.
Man - those roller mowers are complicated. Super fix Mick 👍
Yeah but with the speed control it's worth it.. ta for watching cupcake
I just wanted to give you a big shout out for you and your video. Helped enormously, especially the paracord techniques. Both belts replaced and about to test it out!
Good luck... Fingers crossed
@@themowerman All done and self propelled. thx very much 😀 Still not sure whether to replace the cable 2006 model. We have drive
@@andrewhewitt6353 fantastic so pleased for ya
P.S. Are there any videos about replacing cables?
@@andrewhewitt6353 hmm may have .. it's simple enough.. take it off.. put one on
Good vid Mick
Nice video Mick
Thanks mate
Thank You for the information 👍.
I hit the like button 👍😊
Thanks David.. hope all is good mate
Nice fix and nice mower. Seems like they need to swap out the bracket with a steel one to give it some more strength.
Yeah but that would mean it would not need replacing right £$
Good one it's a shame that hayter have upgraded that part.. it's the only mower I have that I feel I have to treat it like a baby
Fantastic fix mick nothing phases you I'm rather busy at the moment my new grand daughter arrived last Sunday Connie Louise 👍👍👍👍
Congratulations mate ..
Just a word to say Thankyou Mick. From your video I’ve managed to change both belts and the ally bracket that broke just like th done in your film. Good job sir!! Oil change, fuel filter and a new spark l’oligoélément and we’re ready for spring! Just one question. The spark plug looks a bit sooty suggesting it running a bit rich. Best way to make the mixture a bit more lean?
If it has a card adjustment turn it in a little... And keep changing the air filter it really helps...
Great video 👍 Hope you are having a beaut Easter weekend.
Thanks mate and the same to you
You can't lose with the Hayters. Can be bought cheaply if you need a replacement engine.
Good job mate . The spring of death for sure.
Lol yeah
When did you put up the Tecumseh label ;-) Very technical video!!!! at 21:58 " Just be conscious of where the spring goes beforehand" That is the job!!!! AH yes the old engine brake. The big spring is why us small engine mechanic have blue fingernails. Nice work
Thanks mate it's a tricky fix with lots of information so I tried to show it all..
Good work Mick, you'll save people lots with that one. On another note, meant to leave a comment on your previous video, I was wondering why you didn't weld up your broken seat rather than buy a new one.
Yo yo .. I was looking at the stool today and I may have a go . If I can clean up the metal to weld it
@@themowerman Flappy disk on an angle grinder should do it. Just make sure you move flammable stuff out of the way.
@@BensWorkshop it's not as simple as that mate where it's broken.. I will find a work around
@@themowerman Fair enough. Good luck!
hi mick great video - did all this belts new bracket - but it still seems to be bouncy - the bracket is in tight - can't think what could be causing this - can you help ?
It sound fix it mate is the spring on correct.. if not this will have an effect on it
Great video as always. Is it possible if you could do a separate video on how to replace the belts themselves. I need to replace them on both my 41 and 48 but not much information as it’s seems only when your doing gearbox changes people seem to do them.
Keep at it. Thanks
Yeah I can do one mate
Nice fix brother what a lovely machine do someone a turn cheers matey
Yeah mate
How's she goin'? Nice fix here Mick and it's the same thing on all 3 mowers, so that's good eh!! Not too expensive to repair either. Nice going. How are you liking the new shop layout. Looks like you have a lot more room!! Take 'er easy!!
Yeah I'm liking the new layout.. hope all is good mate
i remember having to pull them height adjuster springs through the back of the 56 and push the pin across the earlier ones were easier to fix but still a fiddley delocate machine they were better when they had the side drive on them
Yes mate
can you not weld them brackets or is it cheaper to bye brand new ones good informative video mick
Yeah if you can weld aluminium
Does it matter if it’s a claw hammer Mick? Great video, step by step instructions too.
At last a man with some common sense.. thanks Steve
Hi Mick, this vid was very helpful especially the variator spring install....so thankyou. Just for some back ground on my mum's same machine...I have changed the roller, the top bracket (the one that always snaps), all the plastic covers and then found there was very little/no drive. I then replaced the variator (as a couple of the tiny springy plates had snapped off inside...other than that it seemed ok) and both belts, but still no drive. The roller goes around nicely when lifted but not when on the ground and the chain is ok. You can see that its engaging and trying but something is slipping I think. Can you offer any suggestions please?
thanks Adam
Sounds like the gearbox mate ..
@@themowerman Thanks for the advice. I removed the gearbox and it seems to operate ok with the pully slipping until the clutch is operated. As you the pressure on the clutch by hand the gearbox grips the pulley more and more but I'm guessing it is slipping under motor power and the weight of the machine.
The belts whilst brand new and correct, don't seem that tight btw. Just before I splash out on a new clutch cable (very slightly frayed) and gearbox, is there anything else I should try?....and if not, is it the clutch part of the gearbox that is at fault? Thank you in advance and do you take calls on this? Thanks Adam
@@adamharland7716 sounds like the gearbox
I brought a new gearbox and fitted it but that didn't solve the problem. It was in fact the M16 washers either side of the roller that had worn too thin and causing the roller shaft locating pin to jump out of the slot in the roller, hence the poor/non drive
Hello What’s that wee lawnmower trolley ur using? it looks very handy! Keep the videos coming pal 👌
It's a lift table.. I have a much bigger one as well now
I know this was a couple years ago mate but hopefully you still receive comments, I don’t actually have a spring on the variator, do they all have them?
Hi.. no they don't all have them .. is your one a variable speed one or an auto drive?
Hi Mick, this must be the he tenth time I watched this video.
I managed to fully rebuild mine now, so am made up.
I had the same issue with the rear roller assembly falling off the aluminium gear box bracket.
It seems to be able to float left and right.
I don’t suppose you know if there’s a fix for it??
Should be a bolt to keep it in place mate
Where did you get that B&S sign from, looks like it will light up? Never seen anything like that shock absorber front end movement before very interested and informative video mate.
I found it on eBay.. it all lights up.. it's a super cool sign
It's very poor for the price of the machine. These metal fatigue problems generally were understood in the 1950s. Great job Mick.
I've got one of these with electric start and it charges battery well running. I was going to replace it with a new one till I found out they don't do one that charges battery now. You have to charge it separately.
Yes.. it's not a problem.. it can be taken out quickly enough
@@themowerman true but if your going to build something that is electric start. Why not charge it as well.
@@adventcliff2040 because it's cheaper for them not to fit it with an alternator and for you to buy a charger...
@@themowerman yes that i understand. I would pay the extra to have what I want.
Thats why I'm keeping old one.
where did you get the battery from? sounds like the cotter pin on the sproket chain has backed out
I got it from Amazon.. no it was just the bracket was not all the way in the roller bracket
@@themowerman thanks👍
😊👍
How do these variators work?
The two pulleys spread apart.. they open and close
A serious design fault compared to the older reliable side shaft Hayters. 👍
Yeah it's a shame..
