Types of Planner Layouts:
Vertical
Vertical Lined (3 separate lined boxes)
Lined Vertical (no breaks in between)
Horizontal
Dashboard
Monthly
Hourly
Student
Teacher
SOAP (faith planning)
Fitness/Wellness
Checklist (Happy Hostess/ miss maker)
Recipe (meal planning)
I think they should do up a version of the Teacher layout the way you have it (days on the side, topics on the top) and call it the Kell Edition or something. It's enough work to cover things up for a whole book, I think it'd be a worthwhile variations. I like boxes but think horizontally (which I didn't think I'd like at first). The horizontal one looks great for journaling, I might consider that next year.
I like todo lists but seeing those pages of nothing but checkboxes struck fear into my soul.
Also: everytime I see a video that's near the end of 2019, I mentally shout, "GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!"
Yo Happy planner, send this lady some planners, she is so awesome at showing us how to use our planners. I can't wait for 2020!
Aw thanks! I use to be on their squad and they sent me product, but I haven't gotten any in awhile now!
Yeah, there is a new Squad, bit they should have you back for 2021 😍
Heather, I became a planner in February. I didn’t know anything about planning at the time. The clerk at the store where I was looking at planners suggested I look at RUclips videos.. and I found you. You were working in a vertical planner which is the one i fell in love with.. or it probably was your decorating... anyway, the vertical is my one and only. I just purchased a 2020 planner in the vertical layout.. of course! Thanks for the ideas and inspiration you provide us planners.
Great video. I got the Homebody Dashboard layout. I am a retiree, [and a homebody] and really don't have that heavy a schedule anymore. Except for doctor visits, my time is my own so the dashboard is perfect for me. And I can decorate it to my hearts content. Up until last year, when I bought the monthly planner, I was a committed vertical planner. Now, it's the dashboard. Thank you for sharing the different kinds of setups. Very informative. 💖
I have the dashboard layout for 2020. I hardly ever have more than 3 things listed for any day so I dont need a lot of space. Plus the dashboard will be great for my weekly lists: cleaning, gratitude, prayer requests, meal planning.
I'm loving my horizontal planner. The things I write tend to be detailed with more words, so I can't imagine fitting everything in the narrow boxes on the vertical layout. With the horizontal I can either decorate if I don't have a lot to write, or write a lot and minimalize the decorating depending on the day and whether I have a lot going on or little going on. I do find I tend to decorate sparsely at the beginning of the week, as my schedule and to-dos tend to change during the week. Then I add more décor if I don't need to write a lot on a given day, and this is working out well for me.
Thank you for taking the time to explain. I'm a newbie I am using vertical classic planner. Everyday I watch a video of yours. I learn something new everyday and what works for me. It as also helped me to help my friends who are now interested in using the Happy Planner.
I literally watched this video and then got up and went straight to Michaels and hobby lobby. Lol I love these planners. I’ve learned so much from you Heather on all the different ways to use them. Thanks!
Yay! I'm glad that it helped you!
I have tried just about every layout possible, and I keep returning to the vertical. I like it in my classic because most HP stickers are made to fit. I label my boxes for morning afternoon and evening. Works for me!
I made a true Frankenplanned of a 12 month vertical and an 18 month monthly. I felt wicked dividing the 18 months to work as a twelve month planner, switching pages in absurdum. But now it's perfect and I'll be able to carry only four months at a time.
Me, too.
My sister introduced me to Happy Planners. She listened to and knew my lifestyle/needs, was familiar with the layouts, and suggested the monthly layout/to-do lists (Botanicals). I've stuck with it all year (tried others but went back). Next year I'm going with a dashboard layout because it seems like a natural progression, just breaking my monthly listing into weekly listing. Your review of who would use it was spot on. Anyway, my best advice is if your sister isn't a happy planner, ask someone who is for advice on planners or watch videos like this first. Otherwise they're just beautiful covers.
I'm using the monthly layout for work. It is purely functional and those checklists work great. I don't even mark the days, just use it as my running to do list. It's really helped me get far more done and also acts as a prompt so I know where things are in the process. I've also added filler paper and use it for short informal meeting notes when I don't need my laptop to formally record minutes.
I am new to Happy Planner but I used to use Franklin Covey back in the day. I really prefer the look of the horizontal layout but I HAD to have the Glam Girl planner, which is vertical, so I will be using that for 2020. Who knows - maybe I will end up loving vertical, we’ll see! I also have the Live Life Colorfully notebook which I use for journaling. I 💗 filling it with stickers and things I’m thankful for. I can’t get enough! This statement sounds far-fetched, but Happy Planner is changing my life! And I am not exaggerating. I am an unorganized person by nature and HP has helped me find an enjoyable way to make the most of my time, as well as releasing my creative side. Thank you Heather for sharing your fantastic ideas!
The biggest problem is finding the style you like in the layout you want. Mambi need to make all the styles available in all the layouts so that everyone can actually find what they like that also suits their needs.
ikonographics YES YES!!!!!
It's actually really interesting to learn about their business model, and a lot of people are surprised to find out that they don't actually have a ton of say in this. What they do is they design the different themes for all the planners, and then the buyers from the stores that are carrying the product go to the mambi headquarters. The buyers look at all the themes and pick the ones they want, and then the buyers actually typically decide what layout the themes are going to have- the buyers want to make sure they have a balance of different layouts for everyone. The buyers are also the ones that get the final say on which cover is chosen too!
Exactly!
@@kellofaplan That's very interesting.
Exactly. I'm new to Happy Planner and I like aspects and features of 2-3 different layouts. For instance, I want the dashboard, but I also want the horizontal layout for to-dos and planning. Is it possible to combine?
I love the dashboard layout because of the checklists and how it still leaves some space to decorate. I don't have a ton of appointments/kids schedule stuff, so it works for me
Zinzi Mashibini same for me.
OMG! You saved my brain! I used to plan with the HP vertical layout but NOW since I'm making a come back I will be going with the HP Dashboard style. It really incorporates everything I saw in the Simplified Planner but I can still decorate it. You can't really do that in the SP because of the spiral bind. I've watched so many videos but yours by far is the best! I cant wait to buy mine.
I started planning with vertical layouts many years ago (EC and Happy Planner - I still have the dividers from my first HP, those botanicals were gorgeous!). After a while I realised that decorating a ton wasn’t really for me, so I switched to bullet journaling, but then I saw I the dashboard layout mini last year after - and OMG it’s perfect for the way I think and plan! The left side has all my notes and tasks for the week, and the focus spot with the grid fits my weekly habit tracker perfectly. Then the daily/right side I track apppointments etc, and track which day I do the tasks from the left side.
My only issue for next year is deciding if I want classic or mini size!
What you said is so true- I bought two different planners and neither of them ended up being right for me. I bought a classic dashboard and found it frustrating until I turned it into a wellness planner. Now I use the left page for journaling and inspiration and the right side to track health and well being practices, and I love it. I bought an inexpensive vertical calendar to use for my catch-all planner and I love that too. I keep a few months of each of those on the same discs. I also bought a horizontal teacher planner - which I do use for lesson plans. For that one, I change it every week to make it vertical, which suits my schedule and my style better. Watching your videos and other planners helped me see the possibilities and stick to the planners to make them work. Thanks for your inspiration!!
Hi Heather 👋🏾 newbie to the planner community. I was a little overwhelmed by the vertical layout/ format! After watching your video I'm excited to plan. My goal is to become more organized in my day to day. I am an avid list writer! I am naturally obsessed with all things stationary.
Im an using the mini planner. I love the fact it fits in my purse. Fitness and faith mini plannerd
As a new planner.....I wish I would've stumbled upon your video weeks ago. I ordered from online and didnt pay attention to layouts and got the vertical. It's not bad, but it wouldn't have been my 1st choice. My entire life revolves around V.A appointments for the hubby and multiple dr appointments for our kids. Everything is kept within my phone but I am also trying to get a grip on our spending so I'm trying to combine my entire life into 1 planner......I've also learned the new term "Franken-Planning". I guess that's what I am lol. I'm kinda just combining elements of stuff that work for what I need. Thank you so much for your breakdown of these layouts and giving some insight on the different uses!!!!
I currently use an 18-month horizontal layout Happy Planner because I don’t have too much happening during the day. I’m in recovery from a stroke so I just use it to keep track of my weight (which I check-in on Monday’s), and fitness goals/exercise schedule. I just use checklists and dot points/bullets for other things I want to write in my planner. I haven’t seen the mentioned Vertical Lined layout, or I’d be super interested in buying that. Heather, you give me so much inspiration from seeing your videos and I’ve even gone to your channel to search for and watch older videos that have also helped me so much since becoming a planner babe. Thanks! 💜
I am so thankful that my videos have helped! I will pray for you during your recovery!
Heather Kell thank you 🙏 💜
I'm using a monthly layout for a daily prayer tracker, a horizontal for daily scripture journaling, and a regular vertical for everyday planning. 😊
Not paying attention to the cover is how I ended up with two monthly layout planner. Upside, I have list pages for the next two years 🤣
Starting my first happy planner in 2020, the homebody. I like seeing everything I need for the week at once, wish there was more room for decoration but I think for my first year I will really enjoy it! Plus it's beautiful!
I think the Dashboard layout would be the best layout for work in an office.
Thanks for the video Heather! Horizontal is my favorite layout and the one I will be sticking with for 2020, but I also plan on using the dashboard layout from Homebody!
Been planning for a few years but never used a happy planner before. Watched your video. Always loved horizontal planners but saw the dashboard layout and fell in love with it. Its perfect for me. Went to Joannas and got myself a dashboard planner and i love it. So excited to use it next year
Hi! I just bought my first Happy Planner! You're videos are awesome! For 2020 I have just purchased another vertical planner. I like the layout and it gives space to actually decorate! 😊
I purchased the big vertical I love the look of classic stickers in a big vertical ! Lots of white space
I've been using the vertical layout this year. I bought a vertical and a dashboard layout for next year. I also have a lined vertical 18 month planner that I stick in when I have a ton of stuff to do. I use it as a checklist or schedule. I use the teacher planner for homeschooling. I also have a dashboard layout in my mini for next year and I think I'm going to love that layout for errands.
I felt like vertical was tough for me as someone who initially didn't have a lot to actually plan in a way that I needed 3 sections per day. It left it difficult to 'fill' it and it always felt empty and unfulfilling. Dashboard turned out to be a better fit for me since I value having a weekly overview style. 😊
I use a mini dashboard as my everyday on the go planner! Super quick and easy to decorate, I have all my important lists and ideas right with me! I use the vertical hourly for work to track my schedule and productivity!
Thank you for going through all of these. I'll definitely be looking for the monthly planner. I love a good list!
I just bought my first Happy Planner. Thank you so much for explaining and breaking down the use of each one!! 😃
Great Video I use a dashboard layout. That way I can keep track of what I need to do every day. And I use each box to keep track of all my to do’s from Bills, projects and chores.
This was so helpful! I got a monthly view planner and I was having the hardest time finding inspiration and trying to figure out why no stickers worked for my planner! THANK YOU!
I am using the 18 month wellness planner. I love the vertical layout with the exercise/wellness journal boxes.
The dashboard would be a great one for faith planning also.Like I would write a particular word and write down the meaning/Hebrew/Latin for example. It would be a more intense study.
This was such a fantastic video! Really enjoyed you sharing this. Was able to finally decide what happy planner I want. I was so confused before
I have tried many brands of planners too including Erin Condren life planner and the petite planners and binder from EC too. Happy planner, Lily Pulitzer, kate Spade, Vera Bradley, Passion Planner, Simplified Planner, rifle paper planner, Live rich planner from TBM and her budget one too. I prefer the daily or horizontal layout best. I like the dashboard lay out, it’s growing on me. Great video love. 😃💗
Thank you. This was very handy! After watching this, I wish there was the teacher layout done as you showed it. It works so perfectly. 💜
Such a perfect video. I was getting quite frustrated with trying to understand all the various planner types. So glad you named them and went over each one. I'm really enjoying the benefits found in the Happy planner line at whay seems like such an affordable price.
Loved this video!!! I just purchased the monthly HP to use for my budgeting based on your recommendation and am in love!! I find that there’s a lot of the HP budget extension kit that is wasted based on my family’s needs.
I look forward to using it along with my dashboard (home/personal) and hourly (work) planners. As always, excellent and informative content.
I’m about to start needing a planner option for my writing, so this is really helpful. Month style it is for me!
Wow, you just showed me how to best utilize the monthly layout.
I want a planner for my small business. Right now I'm using a horizontal where I mostly just write to-do lists and then I have a separate notebook to keep to-do lists lol! So the monthly layout seems like the obvious choice to me! I can easily write down what I need to accomplish each day and check it off! Love it! I will probably also get a teacher one because I just started homeschooling my daughter and I will use that one to keep track of what she works on each day. ☺️💕
I love the vertical layout for decorating, but I’m finding I prefer to plan in the dashboard layout. I also have the faith soap layout that I use
I've got a horizontal for a daily journal, and a vertical for memory planning. Keeping it simple for 2020!
Thank you so much! I've been struggling to decide what type of planner to choose because I couldn't figure out what was inside. Now to narrow it down
I really am leaning toward the dashboard option. Since I'm not a decorator I think this would suit me best because it has built in check lists. I just list things and cross them when I'm done. I have a vertical at the moment but felt like it had too much wasted space when I was done planning, lol!
This helps tremendously!, I loved this video, and will come back. I am new to all of this. Thank you so much. 👵🏻❤️☕️
I'm so glad that it helped!
Thank you so much for this video! I almost bought monthly when I think dashboard will suit me better after seeing this!
Great Video! Because I am a #GLAMgirl fanatic...the lined vertical is one of the layouts I’ll be using in 2020. Also love the new Dashboard, so I’ll probably be getting the Floral Homebody. The Horizontal layout is also one of my FAVs!
I L😍VE creating TransFormer planners, so other layouts will definitely be used.
My first planner last year was a Vertical I bought Stickers but don't use them, but still love the planner idea. Just received my new planner, not Vertical but was unsure of what I did get and how to use it. Just watched your video, Thank You! I bought the Monthly Planner, to do check list.... I love to do and check list, so I think I have bought the perfect planner for myself. Thank You and I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Thanks so much that was really helpful for me. I enjoyed the way you broke down each planner and the why. I'm probably going to go with the horizontal I believe that's the one you mentioned for people who don't like to decorate a whole bunch but want to get the work done. Thanks again 😁
I use the monthly layout for goal breakdown/tracking and a classic vertical for every day and school planning. The top box is my regular to dos, the middle is school to dos, and the bottom is any assignment or test that's due.
Thank you, you saved me from going out and buying more layouts for experimentation!
This was great!!!! More videos like this every year! Lol love how u use the teacher planner for non teaching! I love it and maybe get one if I find it on clearance. Ross had some 18mo planners for $6, I saw horizontal, vertical, hourly.
This was soooo helpful I have a tracker planner that I want to use up before I buy a planner but this has helped me a lot because I finally narrowed down to wanting a happy planner and to see the different styles!!!
I am a teacher, but I teach per hour so I love using an hourly layout combined with a monthly layout. This year I bought the Dream Seeker and I got hourly pages to combine them! I can't wait for 2020
Lol what you did with that teacher layout...you made a Limelife layout C! It exists and I love it!
I’m not a to do list person
My catch all is a standard Erin Condren BUT i
FILL my monthly Happy Planner planner with outing photos vision boards and mind maps
Yes it’s a scrapbook - but I organize contents with calendar and month tabs What doesn’t work I cover with photos or stickers
When Michaels recently dropped dated planner prices to 70 percent off I bought the medium and big size Dream Seekers
These Will re date easily and I love my feathers flowers and cow skulls
So many ways to repurpose this style
Love watching and learning from your videos. Wondering which planner you’re gonna use for your memory keeping 😁 Thank you!
Very thorough. I think the dashboard layout may be for me. Tyfs
Hmmmmm I’ve never seen the to do list/monthly planner, I think it’d be perfect for me! Thank you!!!
Dashboard: School
Slim Classic: Personal
Horizontal: Fitness
Tangie Henry 😮 waittttt what is a slim classic?!?! 😍🤷🏻♀️ sounds so interesting !!!!! I did vertical/ traditional last year, but am going with Dashboard this year!!
Theresa Yes! The slim classic is basically the half-sheet Happy Notes that HP made into a planner because so many people were converting their Happy Notes into an alternative to the Hobonichi (a.k.a. Fauxbinichi or Happinichi). I really do love the layout/size. It’s just enough. 🤗
Thanks for sharing! Very helpful! I’ll probably go with horizontal.
I currently have frankenplanned my Homestead vertical classic which is an 18 month to include Sept. -Dec. of my old vertical in the back for a Faith/Wellness Planner.
Thanks girl I was struggling to find a new planner and this video helped out a lot!
I currently use the vertical layout (Classic) for personal and the daily filler sheets for work. I just scored two teacher planners on Zulily and can't wait to try that layout!
This is going to make me buy more happy planners 😣😆. I have to practice restraint!
Great video! I think I’m going to do a Happy Notes and add a extension packet of the dashboard planners.
Thanks for giving us ideas.
Michael's in San Antonio, on 410 had a lot of those Teachers Planner yesterday.....14 Dec 19
This helped a lot, it's so overwhelming with all the options and not being able to have a good look at them. So thank you :)
This video is fantastic and so much useful information. I went with the vertical lined Happy Planner for myself for 2020 because that's what I have for my 2019 Happy Planner and I've loved it all year, so no sense in changing something that's working for me so far. 🤷🏼♀️ Plus I already have a lot of stickers to go with the vertical happy planners, so no reason to change it. I also decided to splurge for christmas and got my friend who has never had a planner the floral design faith based Happy Planner for 2020, I already know she'll be doing the washi tape trick you described but honestly, I know it'll work for her and I'm just really happy my friend will finally have a proper planner.
great video! I love to do lists!!! I wish happy planner made a smaller planner--maybe I am crazy but I love really small planners.
Sooooo glad you did this video!!
Thanks for sharing, very helpful!! I will be getting the Big vertical because I make the rows represent different things.....1st-work 2nd-family 3. budget/events!!
I love that monthly layout planner. Currently in my planner,I don't really use the weekly spread at all. I just write in events on the monthly calendar and the add in my own homemade todo lists. So this would totally work for me! Thanks for the overview. This was helpful :)
Thank you so much for this video. It has been really helpful.
My first planner in 2018 was a BIG teacher planner because I loved the cover/dividers and lined boxes. I copied the way you covered the days and put them at the top and used each row for different things. However I did struggle with decorating as there weren't many stickers. I stuck with it till July 2019 then moved into Miss Maker as I loved the theme. I'm much happier with the classic size and vertical layout although I've had to use washi most weeks to cover up the thick coloured lines. I will stick with it till next July then I definitely want a quite neutral vertical layout.
I love vertical and recently lined vertical. I got glam girl for work because I realized I need to keep that completely separate from personal, faith and wellness. I got the glam girl for my personal and the mini faith and mini wellness (did the transformer thing) so I can throw in my purse too. I think I am good now.lol
Hourly -Work
Dash board (mini)- purse planner/ on the go
Monthly (mini) -gratitude journal
Lined vertical (classic)- home planner/ stays on desk
Vertical (Big) -memory keeping
I measured once, and the horizontal actually is larger when you look at square inches! But I think vertically so I prefer that one. 😊
I really like the dashboard layout...gotta go get one
Love the video. I myself like the horizontal layout. I to have the botanical black one. Hard to find now and I'm glad I picked it up. I did pick another hp. I believe it's the water color one. 18 month also. I like to mix. Love the layout of that one. It has the horizontal layout. I used the daily task from my botanical as a password layout. I covered the daily task and use the bullets for password of my apps and website. Of course I decorate.
I am really a very functional planner with a little bit of decor. My mini on the go is a dashboard. My at home classic is a dashboard unless I am on vacation and then it goes to a vertical. My work planner is a big teacher planner.
I use 2 planners. My work planner is hourly which is perfect as i have a lot of different tasks during the day. For personal use, im switching from mini horizontal to mini dashboard. I think that will work better! Thanks for the video!
Very helpful...you’re a good teacher!
Over the last 2 years I've slowly changed from a horizontal person to vertical. I've gotten really good at using stickers to cover my layout to a vertical.
LOVED this video!!! Also chuckled a ton when you showed the Dashboard (I’m using that one this year 😍 homebody!) and couldn’t help but think of my intense Enneagram 3.
You said something like “this planner is really great for people who just. wanna. get. stuff. Done!” 😂✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️😍
I’ve only been using HP for 3 years, and the last two years I was so disappointed with how little I decorated!!! So I feel like this might be more of a “win” in that sense.
Thank you so much for this video!! Loved it !!!!
Tfs the different types and reasons to choose them. It was very informative.
I have been using a vertical layout planner but for 2020 I am moving into Glam Girl lined vertical and a mom dashboard mini layout.
I like the video is informatief. I will use the monthly layout I buy the blue one of stargazar. I use it for the list. And I will use a horizontal for my cach all planner.
I'm going to use the Homebody for daily journaling.
Thank you this video was very helpful I definitely subscribe to your channel and have been binge watching videos! I love your nails in this video 😁😁
I’m using the 18 month planners: water color Dashboard for myself and Choose Joy Student for my dogs/Kennel/Dog shows
