You can also solder the round core wind to keep the string from going dead, just wipe a little at the end after you cut it to length

Great post. Lovely Novo. Gorgeous rosewood board. Been using pure nickel strings for quite a while (Pyramid. Mangan, DR, Stringjoy)

Thanks - how do you like the Pyramids compared to those other 3?

@@haskitt I gave up using them.
Different guitars seem to ask for different sets or brands. And every person hears different things too !

locking tuners doesnt matter cut after tightening so no issue or if you put tight right angle bend then put thru tuning post tighten then cut

I have been using both StringJoy and Curt Mangans. Just the regular Hex core steels. I like them both. The StringJoys sound amazing as far as tuning goes. I like the brightness and the feel is incredible. Curt Mangan doesn't have the attack of the StringJoy though. I am more of a hard rocker. 70s and 80s.

Hey Kurt, would you say that the Curt Mangan hex cores are slinkier than the Stringjoys?

Great comparison. I've never played Mangans but I'm a fan of pure nickels. I currently have a mix of DR and String Joys on my guitars but after trying out some Pyramid hand wounds, I'm probably going to end up switching them all come restring time.

Cool, I’ll have to try the pyramids!

Always thougt the hexa core could cut and damage the string outer wrap from the inside. Round staff is always better imho

Hey Scott, just subbed. I know you haven't posted a follow up video but I wondered if you would update us about your thoughts on Stringjoy Vs Mangan (sound/feel/quality). I'm looking to order a custom set of pure nickel for the first time and not sure what i'm getting into. I think the slinkier brand will be where I start. Thanks for the video! - Richard @ The Jam Space

Hey Richard, as far as the Mangans v stringjoy, I think the mangans are a little more slinky. Further, the DR pure blues are a little more slinky than the Mangans. They’re all great and different IMO.

The tone from the strings are almost exactly the same, to my ears. The stringjoys give a more immediate attack and responsiveness to picking technique. My pick would be Stringjoy, thank you for the demo.

The string joys were ungodly bright and does it go well with the mellow pure nickel
the cm weee better atleast to me
Sounded like a better all around string

Stringjoys got much more tension. If you put stringjoys on 24.75 and curt mangan on 25.5 scale guitars, they should feel about the same

The Mangan has a round tone

Like the DR pure nickel wound string, but the D string winding keeps failing, do you have this issue?

  • @justinpaquette224

Sometimes it seemed like the stringjoys had just a very slight bit more output

I have to agree. It’s hard to tell if it’s just my playing, though.
