"Is this based on a comic book?"
It's inspired by two comics and Luc Besson hired the artists of both of them to do designs for this movie.
He grew up on "Valerian and Laureline" (1967) which he eventually did adapt in 2017. He hired artist Jean-Claude Mesiers for The Fifth Element who asked him why he didn't just make a Valerian movie instead of what he felt like was a vague knock-off. Besson replied that he didn't believe VFX tech was ready to do it justice, and waited until he saw James Cameron's "Avatar," before he felt like he could properly tackle it. Mesiers had a strong influence on the look of 70's sci-fi, most notably some direct inspiration for Star Wars.
The other comic, "The Long Tomorrow" (1976) by "Alien" writer Dan O'Bannon and artist Jean "Moebius" Giraud was both the visual inspiration for Blade Runner and the source material for the "Harry Canyon" segment of the "Heavy Metal" animated movie (Both released in 1981) and is considered ground zero for the iconic look of cyberpunk city-scapes. Ridley Scott had Moebius design all the human's environments, costumes, and tech for Alien (he took first crack at all the alien stuff too, but of course they went with HR Giger's designs for all of that) Scott didn't have Moebius for Blade Runner but he did have Syd Mead whom he told to make 2019 LA look like "The Long Tomorrow." You can see direct influences like the detective in the flying car, a femme fatale that is obviously the inspiration for Rachel, and the stratified society where the lower classes live in the literal lower levels of the city. ("Aliens" fans will also see why the gender of "Arcturian poontang" is irrelevant)
Syd Mead and Moebius worked together on "Tron" another early cyberpunk classic, also released in 1981, which may have one of the earliest instances of "skybeams" in sci-fi movies.

29:31, fun fact; the first part of the opera is a French classical opera, called “il Dolce Sueno”, from the opera “Lucia Di Lammermor”. The second part, that you refer to as “Hip Opera”, was actually composed completely by Luc Besson, the director, and was designed to be “unsingable” by human means. Mainly because there are rapid note changes, and 9th jumps(1 note higher than octave jumps). They come so fast, that it had to be synthesized.

I think part of why this movie feels unique in the way it does is that it feels very "non-American". Most huge sci-fi blockbusters are big Hollywood affairs with tropes, cliches, and aesthetics we're used too, but The Fifth Element is so not traditional Hollywood. The acting decisions, shot choices, music, pacing, costuming, story etc, basically everything just has a way more "European" vibe is the only way I can describe it.
The idea that Love is the fifth element, and so "love conquers all, all you need is love" etc, is such a romantic, quirky esoteric, and fairytale-esque idea especially for sci-fi genre stuff, it's just not something you often get in big-budget American cinema which is usually far more straightforward, especially in the 90s!

I do know Luc Besson, the Director and screenwriter wanted to make a SCI-FI film that wasn't dark like Star Wars or even Star Trek. Meaning, very little color in those films and kinda drab. That's why there's so much color and crazy outfits. What a great direction. You can see his color choices again in his "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets".

Costume design was by Jean Paul Gautier. It was very inventive using straps for a futuristic look. Everyone expected him to nominated for an Oscar, along with Chris Tucker for Best Supporting Actor. Both were snubbed.

They actually wanted Prince to play the role of Ruby Rod but when he turned it down Chris Tucker took the role . When he found out about the Prince thing he played Ruby as a exaggeration of him. Beautifully done as Prince was the man who could walk into a bar in a frilly shirt and heals then walk out out with ur girl. Chris Tucker was fantastic in the role.

Did anyone mention that the Diva's Song was made to almost be impossible for a human voice to sing? I LOVE this movie. My entire family loves it and my dad's not really a fan of sci-fi but he's down for this one. You should try to listen to all the actual opera singers attempting to sing the Diva's song. It's impossible and awesome at the same time. They are always trying to sing it and hit it.

Lovely reaction. I remembeways r watching this movie and many friends who were either star wars or star trek fans recognized, this is a good movie. Also despite the action, humor, I always loved the little messages, like the garbage when they are in the spaceport, the speech of Gary Oldman and a more obvious message, when leloo reads war. I always loved the fifth element being love. Not just love conquers all, but love in interaction with the other elements. Also the fifth element is referred to as ether.

Zorg's henchman is played by trip-hop artist Tricky, of Massive Attack.
He's directly or indirectly responsible for some of the best music to come out of the 90s. His "Maxinquaye" solo album still appears on lists over the best albums of all time.
To qualify my following statement: I'm a massive heavy metal fan. The statement: Maxinquaye is an absolute masterpiece!

Wonderful guest-host. Wonderful guest. Wonderful flick. What's not to like? I love this gem by Besson.
Yes, it was mostly based on bits from the 'old' Valérian and Laureline comic book series, with some inspiration from Heavy Metal and works by Moebius (Jean Giraud), etc. Ironically, the metal-clad aliens at the beginning of 5th Element were also in Besson's Valerian (2017) movie.
And yeah, he has a great cast, and is also pretty great at casts in general with his body of work... each main and secondary level roles have a certain magnetic-ism inherent in them, which makes Valerian headscratchingly weird in his choice for the two main actors; just so bland on camera. The rest of that movie is over the top chaotic as well. Worth a viewing even if on your own time.

I absolutely adored this movie as a 90s kid and appreciate it as actually being quality now that I am older. Anyone else think that when they were prepping the space cruise for takeoff that the aliens they burned out from the landing gear was a wink and a nod to the Tribbles from Star Trek?

This is one of my all-time favorite movies, I jump on watching 1st-time reactions of it! It's a great mix of sci-fi, action, and comedy. And I love that they infused it with an international cast, unusual music choices, and that opera moment as well. The editing was also super unique, linking scenes together by how they are cut. Very fun film! ~Caroline

One of my favorite Sci-Fi movies! Excellent casting, and one of Willis’s best roles. The Art Direction is spectacular, as is the unique score. It’s no surprise that the director Luc Besson is French, I can’t imagine an American coming up with this vision.
