Steven Page, Brian Wilson lyrics;
Drove downtown in the rain
Nine-thirty on a Tuesday night
Just to check out the late-night record shop
Call it impulsive, Call it compulsive
Call it insane
But when I'm surrounded I just can't stop
It's a matter of instinct
It's a matter of conditioning and a matter of fact
You can call me Pavlov's Dog
Ring a bell and I'll salivate
How'd you like that?
Dr. Landy tell me you're not just a pedagogue
'Cause right now I'm lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did
Well I am lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did
So I'm lying here
Just staring at the ceiling tiles
And I'm thinking about, oh what to think about
Just listening and relistening
To Smiley Smile
And I'm wondering if this is some kind of creative drought
Because I'm lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did
Well I am lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did, whoa
And if you want to find me
I'll be out in the sandbox
Just wondering where the hell all the love has gone
I'm playing my guitar and building
Castles in the sun, oh oh oh
And singing "Fun, Fun, Fun"
Lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did
Well I am lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did, whoa
I had a dream
That I was three hundred pounds
And though I was very heavy
I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
Somebody, I couldn't see the ground
Somebody, I couldn't see the ground
Somebody
Because I'm lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did
Well I am lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did, yeah
Drove downtown in the rain
Nine-thirty on a Tuesday night
Just to check out the late-night record shop
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive
You can call it insane, oh oh
But when I'm surrounded I just can't stop
Written by Steven Page
5 cheers to the cello player. Awesome playing and backup vocals.
Wish he was credited in the description.
So this was one of my fav songs at 15. 22 years later, it still holds up against anything classic or new.
He's still got it. Wow.
i love BNL but i miss you. Please bury your differences and get back together. Please be my Christine McVey. Your voice is beautiful and so distinctive!!
+Rebecca Lockwood Couldn't agree more.
You said it. It doesn't feel right to here "brian wilson" without eds "late night record shop". BNL still awesome but you can just here something missing. What ever the issue was, it's not worth not being a part of the best band there is (in my opinion).
He can't return. BNL is signed with Disney. And Steven was caught doing cocaine. Not exactly a Disney image.
It's been 8 years... I think they have passed that.
Marc Duguay I highly doubt Disney has lol
Steven I have PTSD. The BNL have been a big part of my listening recovery. I have so much to say, but will keep it short You guys and you especially have given me something to love. Your music lifts me, inspires and outright keeps me happy. I would love to share my story and military experience with you but not on this post. Anyhow thanks for everything and keep it going. Andre 21 year veteran.
Nothing a 90's dude loves more than an Acoustic guitar/ cello duo rendition
Just saw him at the NYS Fair in 2023. He was great.
Please we need you guys more than ever, everything is so dark
Wow. Just wow.
Still gives me chills when he hits those high notes
Fuck. my life. Steve, why did you have to break my heart. 1st time I've listened to this man since since 2008....very emotional
If you were my neighbor, I'd take you out and I dont even know you. But you know great music and that's a great response. Peace
Man he's incredible!
Please stay 🙏 together !
God. Damn. Genius.
What an outstanding voice.
It's a shame he's no longer with the Ladies.
Actually I think it's their loss. Ed doesn't have the range or talent
@@penguin44ca agreed 👍
@@penguin44ca Wouldn't discount Robertson's talent; but, BNL is forgettable without Page.
We’ve all been Blessed ♥️ Probably the Best Voice of a Generation 👌
YES
Voice of an angel.
One of my favourite songs. Steven page has such a strong and unique voice. Reminds me of my youth. Awesome.
Nothing pulls at the heart strings and provides the chills that Steven Page can provide singing this and so many other incredible songs! If some music genie asked me to make one musical wish, I think bringing Elvis back would be the only thing that would top reuniting BNL! and then only by a close margin!
eWreckd'd have you ever heard Brian Wilson’s version of this song. He actually sang it in 2000. It was amazing!
@@vulcanman64 ruclips.net/video/bjeWqXyVLu4/видео.html
There’s something so “every man” about this song, this singer and this time period. I fvcking love it because I’m every [wo]man.
Wonderful work by Mr. Page and let's also give some of that up for Kevin Fox on cello-- that's a lot more than your garden variety sideman in this!
I recognized him immediately LOL I was like, wait- do I really know who he is?! Made this so much better - and it is already amazing.
Move over The Roaches and Megan Lovell(Larkin Poe) and Linda Ronstadt(Parton Harris Ronstadt) only a little. Instrumentation!
Wow, this version is so beautiful. Lovely.
Who needs a band! They just held you back haha Wonderful to see Steven doing so well solo... well deserved.
Just saw Steven and his trio last night (10/7/2018). John Wesley Harding opened with a half-dozen songs. What a great show! See them if you can!
Beautiful soul with an opera in his throat
Superb!
Pretty amazing to capture the whole thing as a 2-pc
Gordon was our favourite album at my one cool job at Sam the Record Man. I was stocking shelves very early mornings at Woolco and cleaning up fur in a vet clinic weekend evenings.
Can't wait to see him in Manchester in a couple of weeks!! Steven Page in a small venue is going to be incredibly powerful.
Lucky bastard I would love to be there
Yup - that performance is FIRE!
still got it.....
Well duh. It's a singing voice dumbass
Tell that to Axl Rose.
+VonBlade Apparently Axl has been amazing on stage lately. Killed it for ACDC
Amazing vocals as always. Hope for a BNL reunion.
Weww hewwwyea Drove downtown in the rain one of the best songs ever written specially live you guys are awesome singer
That's talent!
much love from the UK, Steve.
visit us soon!
You can tell that Page still has some muscle memory that wants to explode with energy that this cellist just doesn’t have or know. Imagine how many times Page, Robertson, and Creeggan played this song together. You can totally hear the missing ingredients.

oh the memories!!!!
That's pretty awesome!
Damn. I love this. You are the voice. Thank you!
One of the most underrated vocalists/lyricists/songwriters in all of rock and roll.
Could not agree more!
Damn!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love the ending...😍
So nice
PURE GOLD!
@3:36 a string on the bow breaks in the intense performance
I seen Barenaked ladies live 5 years ago or so , and Steven wasnt there ! :(
It would of been wayyy better if Steven was singing
Miss ya bud!
I heard ya on the Radio all the time when I was a young kid growing up in British Columbia!
Keep Rockin \m/
BNL are nothing without this amazing voice!
Absolute truth. They are good musicians but none have this vocal talent.
Hard disagree. But I'm not gonna argue over subjective opinions.
Great ...the voice of BNL
Fantastic !!!
BNL Face to Face. Saw them in West V. Amazing. A long walk home.
Awesome!
Amazing singer, amazing songwriter, amazing human being. He's means so much to me you'd think we were related but I've actually only met him briefly, just once. I hope he keeps making the music he wants for as long as he's able.
I just met him two more times and he couldn't have been a more gracious host. He may have lost the marquee name but he's still at the top of his game.
The best lady
Incredible
Why do videographers purposely never film the headstock of the acoustic guitars? If anybody is interested Steven is playing a Guild Traditional Series D-55
Page is what the BNL is missing.
God i miss Steven with BNL
Great🤩🤩🤩 Steven Page💯💥
Great job Mr. Page. Your bassist is freakin awesome!
Matt McLean that's a cello.
So freaking good. Amazing. Man I wish they still all played together.
🔥 👍🏾
From one of the last comments I don't think he ever lost it great song fantastic I do also like the barenaked Ladies version actually any version that you do is good keep up the good work I had the privilege of seeing the barenaked Ladies live in Chicago I think it was 2004 maybe 2003 but anyway it was a great great concert I'm a big fan
🤟😎 classic
From a Yank...frekin sweet.
woooo!!! Steveie lets crank a tony or two buuuud keep er rockin big guy love ya buds
fucking best
bnl reunion coming out of covid would lift a lot of spirits....just saying.
Thank You Thank You. Thank You. Fucking A
All I want Is a full BNL reunion. Steve and all
To me your were the voice of BNL Proof in the pudding, after you left the band they never charted again in the US. I just watched the documentary on Cream and Eric Clapton thought their success was the combination of the three's individual talents blended to a higher plane of music that connected with everyone. The list of songs as a group that BNL produced pre Steven leaving and post would support the same environment musically
Wish he was still with BNL
3:40 👍🏻
Steven Page meets Mathew Good....... Boom!
Is he currently singing BNL sons he wrote?
I used to think he was saying like Brian Wilson dead, then I realized he was still alive
You go, Steven Page. BNLs are nothing without you.
I hate to ask but have you ever heard Billy Vera do it?
You know when I found out that Dr Landy passed away in '06 I just got a little more happy or I know I shouldn't be happy about someone passing away but the fact that he abused his practice it's hard not to
he looks like teller from pen and teller
I accidently listened to this at 1.25x speed the first time......it sounded better
Really nice. To make it perfect, needs a touch of Barenaked Ladies.
Does anyone even still listen to BNL? This man's voice made BNL who they were.
St33zy Steve
Agree on both accounts
I feel like the band has never been the same without Steven
When Steven left I stopped listening to BNL. He was too huge a part of that group.
@@lancebrock6587 Same... their first album after he left was alright but nothing has really stood out to me otherwise.
Exactly, they are the 'Barenaked Nobodies' without this guy...
Not just a newspaper company... A recording studio too?
Possibly the best version of this BNL song. They dumped him. Steven Page 1 - 0 BNL.
When you realize this guy sung for Thomas and the Magic Railroad.
Fantastic! I didn't know Jim Carrey played the cello!?
😂
Canadians have got to stick together.
@@sheekaloca Hahahahaha 🤣😅😆🤣😅
Love BNL. Just heard them do one week on their selfie cam jam and I was so upset. They did great but it sucked
This about sums up how I feel about it
youre missing like 4 or 5 people
Probably a better version than the BNL
This calls for a little 409 ;).
Best of luck to BNL and no hard feelings but I always thought Steven Page was not only the soul of the band - who are all very talented musicians - but Page was the unique songwriter, singer and wordsmith that made the band special, idiosyncratic, and quirky. Not to mention that his voice is... just beautiful with a tinge of soul. I could listen to it all day. Steven Page has his demons, like I did, and I hope him well... and I get why he struck out on his own. Shit, calling yourself, "Bare Naked Ladies" is quirky and will get you noticed in your twenties back in the early 90s but, gatdamn... trying to pull that off when you are fifty and have a family?... cripes... I dunno even what to say.
Trying to pull it off when your 50 & with kids is sublime... when you have his talent.
Without his voice BNL is nothing....
I know it's NPR but a 3 piece suit? Even if it's pop, this is still supposed to be rock and roll isn't it? Maybe it's a Canadian thing...
What kind of guitar is that?
I wish it was Ed who sang 'late night record shop'...
All due respect to the cellist, but he is no Jim Creeggan.
All due respect but I'm going to disrespect the cellist.
IDGAF about the split. Just lmk when you will be back to New Orleans. Throw me the cello bit on sheet music z
Page WAS BNL
the cellist looks like Dana Carvey.
ok
The only song i truly respect from the band....but thats me
This is a masterpiece tho....
im annonymous It IS a masterpiece but they have multiple amazing songs
You're missing out big time if this is the only song you like from them.
Get the original 5 back together. Only way it works.
