In California- they conducted a post-mortem study of fetanyl-doses and they came up with a mean level of 3 ng/ml of people having died from the overdose without any other substances involved. The first ambulance called for George was for self inflicted injuries. When a suspect in custody is thrashing around and injuring himself the police are taught to hold them completely motionless to prevent self harm. The police can be held liable for those injuries- so after the high profile death in NYC in the police wagon all departments in the USA stepped up restraint protocol. I don't see why the defense keeps bring up the prone position in covid patients and how it helps with gas exchange. Remember the proned covid patients are given extra oxygen to prevent hypoxia, they are also intubated, ventilated, sedated and paralysed. There is a complete mechanical way of keeping these covid patients ventilated, compared to walking human being. To some degree oxygen is force into covid patients. Yes most of us sleep at night in the proned position but we don't die from hypoxia because we don't have anyone knee on our necks, backs and hand cuffs.

The death category ratio is due to the fact that they died and therefore the fentanyl isn't metabolized into norfentanyl. it's not a reflection of the lethality of the fentanyl to norfentanyl ratio.

Your absolutely correct he is not on trail, the defense is trying to prove a point that a drug overdose was the cause of death not the knee on the neck so that is why they are going over the drug levels at the time of death.
The prosecution is going over this now to get ahead of the defense. By talking about it openly, it shows they're not trying to hide anything and they're able to blunt the defense teams' ability to claim that it was the drugs in his system that killed George, not their client.

I wish the history of Dr Foster was allowed into trial as he is been sued by the family of a young black man who died while an officer laid across him in the prone position and Dr Foster did the autopsy and it was apparently a heart attack. He also did a lot of autopsies on black people who died in custody or during arrest and found all died of other causes other than police involvement. He is known to protect police.
I think they are/will be trying to prove that the drugs effected his heart condition which he would not have died without. Similarly, a cop is somewhat protected if they taser someone someone who they do not know has a heart condition and that person dies. The police couldn't have known the individual had a heart condition, and followed their training. They will still need to prove the hold they did was part of his training and that his department failed to retrain him when the standards changed, probably due to a lack of money in the training budget. Their arguement isn't so much that the drugs effected his behavior in a way that gives the police the ok to kill him, it's that the drugs effected his physical health to the point that he wouldn't have died if all the same things happened and he had not had the drugs in his system.

No. Fentanyl is the parent drug and norfentanyl is the metabolite, meaning fentanyl is what you ingest and the body turn it into norfentanyl, meaning that if you have a higher percentage of norfentanyl compared to fentanyl and so a lower fentanyl/norfentanyl ratio, your body is doing it's job by metabolizing fentanyl. Compared to DUI cases, who were alive and post-mortem cases specifically with the same levels of fentanyl in the blood, George Floyd's had a significantly lower fentanyl/norfentanyl ratio, so his body was doing a better job at metabolizing fentanyl, which is consistent with him building op resistance for the drug. And if you had bothered to listen, or look this up yourself, you would know. What you believe is worthless, inaccurate, and shameless if it is not backed by facts. Stop spreading false beliefs.

They are looking at average and mean levels which makes no sense. 1 in 10 could die from way lower levels in their system, but the average would still be higher. With all his health conditions and heart disease, he could have been that 1 in 10. They only showed average statistics as it fits their narrative/outcome they want. They have made it much easier for the defence.
But the other argument the defense will have to address is regular drug use increases your tolerance levels . So if he was using regularly his tolerance would be higher & he'd need more than a low dose to get high. If you have a long break from drugs or booze addiction , your tolerance goes down & if you then use again at high level, you're in trouble. That's how Amy Winehouse died. She'd been off drugs & alcohol for months then went on a binge of both .

This means that the prosecution must convince the jury that there is no other reasonable explanation that can come from the evidence presented at trial. THe Irish pulmonologist testified that asphyxia by pressure points over the duration of the time in custody killed him. And the last Dr. testified CPR should have been administered much sooner.

The ER doctor yesterday was also brought by the state as he was on call at the time Floyd was brought in. The medical examiner who examines bodies for the state after crimes will testify Friday.
Also, both lawyers examine the witness despite who called them. The toxicologist was the forensic doctor who examined Floyd's blood. He wasn't a third party like Dr. Smock was.

Almost anyone would be fine for even an hour with someone of equal weight. The autopsy found no damage to the neck and no evidence of compression of the back.

It was uncomfortable but I think I could do 10 minutes without tapping out forbthe right incentive. I would guess most people could but definitely not for everyone. Of course all very anecdotal.

What is the significance of calculating a norfentanyl to fentanyl ratio? Norfentanyl is an inactive metabolite of fentanyl, so the fact that George had a lot of it only suggests that George had been high on fentanyl for quite a long time before he died, so what? The important thing is the fentanyl, and George had easily enough to kill him, especially when you add on the other heath problems he had including his extreme response to being arrested.

That's metabolites, not the actual fentanyl. His blood fentanyl levels were 11ng/mL so he wasn't dopesick, but that also wouldn't have been enough to kill him if he had a high opioid tolerance (which he probably did).

Ok but what's the LD-50? It's possible he was selling it and had no tolerance like the addicted drivers. This is very misleading as opioid tolerance can be built up to huge levels similar to how an alcoholic can finish an entire handle of hard liquor where a person with no tolerance could easily die from that much.
This isn't even surprising. Most people on drugs have bodies that adapt and learn to fight off the drug which is why addicts have to start taking more and more.
11 ng/ml plus 5.6 ng/ml of Norefentanyl for an individual who was prescribed Suboxone. He would have had to be clean for 3-4 days to get his Suboxone prescription from the Dr., and took Suboxone the day he took his urine test for the Dr.. He had to wait 3 days before he could take fentanyl. That's 7 days off of opiates except for Suboxone; which has low mediated effects on the mu and delta-opioid receptors; which are responsible for respiratory depression. This means his tolerance was at baseline like a normal individual who is not an addict, and 11 ng/ml of fentanyl plus 5.6 ng/ml of Norefentanyl (fentanyl analog/metabolite) is 15.6 ng/ml of fentanyl and its analog: which is enough for him to overdose quickly. Body size doesn't matter with opiates, since it doesn't have to be converted in the body like alcohol. The Dr. stated his breathing was normal until he went unconscious. Respiratory depression wouldn't occur until after he went unconscious; which would occur quickly with a substance as potent as fentanyl on an individual whose tolerance was at baseline/normal. He would have stopped breathing and then his heart would stop within minutes. He knew this, and it is why he didn't want to get in the back seat. He knew he swallowed fentanyl and if he got in that backseat and went unconscious they would have thought he was sleeping during the ride, and he would have died before getting help. This is why he refused to get in the large and wide backseat stating he was claustrophobic and stated he had a medical condition so that the officers would call for EMS. They just got there too late, and he unfortunately died. With friends, I have reenacted a large person's full weight continuously on one side of my skinny neck for 15 minutes, and I was fine. My jawbone and collarbone stopped my neck from being compressed on the ground side; which allowed blood and oxygen to reach my brain. I had much more weight on my neck from a knee for longer, and I am way smaller and did not go near unconscious. I did have a crick in my neck afterward though. Many people overdose taking opiates shortly after stopping Suboxone. Years back this happened to me 2 times in 2 weeks. I lowered my dose of pain medication the second time and still OD'd because my tolerance was at a normal person's level. I knew this already, but all the Dr.s told me that it was very common for Suboxone patients to make this mistake. I was in wrestling, Japanese Jui Jit-su, and Brazilian Jui Jitsu for 11 years. Your neck has to be fully compressed on both sides to be rendered unconscious by cutting off the blood flow to the brain. Again, the chest, collarbone, and jawbone prevent the neck from being compressed on the side facing the ground. For me, it was just my collarbone and jawbone, since I have small chest muscles; which were no help at all for me, and I still lasted 15 minutes with no issues. P.S. My friends monitored me closely while I reenacted this. Don't try this unless you know what you are doing and if you do monitor the person closely. Their neckbone might not be able to take it.
First of all norfentanyl is not active, which is why they took the ratio and not added it up like you did. Second respiratory depression doesn't need someone to be unconscious. Even if we believe that, he should still have been breathing albeit at a low respiratory rate. He stopped breathing altogether which completely suggests he did so because of hypoxia due to neck, chest restraint and his inability to move his diaphragm and intercoastal muscles to breathe Everything you said was wrong and this and other doctors testimony showed that completely.

So... at first this sounds very convincing. But I noticed that the graphs only exclusively include people who were alive. It does not include how many people die from what dosage of fentanyl. If you do a little research, a persons tolerance to the drug, which builds with usage and lowers in abstinence, plays a major role. What this doesn't say is that per Oxford studies 2mg is enough to kill an adult human male and this measurement is generally accepted in medical facilities across the world (some facilities say 3mg.) If Floyd was on 11mg of fentanyl that is 3.66 to 5.5 times the medically accepted lethal dose of a non veteran user. Being objective to the case, this leaves a very large possibility that he overdosed. This could include overestimating his own tolerance, accidental dosage, or miscalculating his drop in tolerance between his uses. Based on the facts accessible, I am actually astonished at the insane level he was at when he died.

Just my observation after seeing lots of evidence, Mr. Floyd didn’t deserve to die for the crime he committed, but it looks to me like everyone involved is partially responsible for the outcome. Floyd committed the crime, resisted arrest & took dangerous levels of drugs, the police were on top of him for too long & the crowd surrounding the scene probably also helped create a dangerous & distracting environment at the time. We are all human & regardless of training I imagine being threatened & screamed at would distract most of us doing our jobs. And that’s merely my opinion. Which others can of course disagree with.

The first ambulance called for George was for self inflicted injuries. When a suspect in custody is thrashing around and injuring himself the police are taught to hold them completely motionless to prevent self harm. The police can be held liable for those injuries- so after the high profile death in NYC in the police wagon all departments in the USA stepped up restraint protocol. That knee move is literally in the police handbook. He was instructed To use it. Bad policy? Or murder? Also- why were there 1000s of George Floyd challenges from teenagers scrubbed off the internet reinacting this move and no one else died? I don't see why the defense keeps bring up the prone position in covid patients and how it helps with gas exchange. Remember the proned covid patients are given extra oxygen to prevent hypoxia, they are also intubated, ventilated, sedated and paralysed. There is a complete mechanical way of keeping these covid patients ventilated, compared to walking human being. To some degree oxygen is force into covid patients. Yes most of us sleep at night in the proned position but we don't die from hypoxia because we don't have anyone knee on our necks, backs and hand cuffs.

@MrCactus there have been multiple testimonies contradicting that. The first autopsy contradicts it as well. Ultimately, all the defense needs to prove is reasonable doubt, and theres plenty of that. I wish the history of Dr Foster was allowed into trial as he is been sued by the family of a young black man who died while an officer laid across him in the prone position and Dr Foster did the autopsy and it was apparently a heart attack. He also did a lot of autopsies on black people who died in custody or during arrest and found all died of other causes other than police involvement. He is known to protect police.

I think they are/will be trying to prove that the drugs effected his heart condition which he would not have died without.
Similarly, a cop is somewhat protected if they taser someone someone who they do not know has a heart condition and that person dies. The police couldn't have known the individual had a heart condition, and followed their training.
They will still need to prove the hold they did was part of his training and that his department failed to retrain him when the standards changed, probably due to a lack of money in the training budget.
Their arguement isn't so much that the drugs effected his behavior in a way that gives the police the ok to kill him, it's that the drugs effected his physical health to the point that he wouldn't have died if all the same things happened and he had not had the drugs in his system.

They are looking at average and mean levels which makes no sense. 1 in 10 could die from way lower levels in their system, but the average would still be higher. With all his health conditions and heart disease, he could have been that 1 in 10. They only showed average statistics as it fits their narrative/outcome they want. They have made it much easier for the defence.
But the other argument the defense will have to address is regular drug use increases your tolerance levels . So if he was using regularly his tolerance would be higher & he'd need more than a low dose to get high. If you have a long break from drugs or booze addiction , your tolerance goes down & if you then use again at high level, you're in trouble. That's how Amy Winehouse died. She'd been off drugs & alcohol for months then went on a binge of both .

Also, both lawyers examine the witness despite who called them. The toxicologist was the forensic doctor who examined Floyd's blood. He wasn't a third party like Dr. Smock was.

What is the significance of calculating a norfentanyl to fentanyl ratio? Norfentanyl is an inactive metabolite of fentanyl, so the fact that George had a lot of it only suggests that George had been high on fentanyl for quite a long time before he died, so what? The important thing is the fentanyl, and George had easily enough to kill him, especially when you add on the other heath problems he had including his extreme response to being arrested.

They're arguing that he didn't have totally abnormal blood concentrations for a living person. They're basically casting doubt on the idea that he would've necessarily died from his drug levels, since people regularly survive at those blood levels.

That's metabolites, not the actual fentanyl. His blood fentanyl levels were 11ng/mL so he wasn't dopesick, but that also wouldn't have been enough to kill him if he had a high opioid tolerance (which he probably did).

Ok but what's the LD-50? It's possible he was selling it and had no tolerance like the addicted drivers. This is very misleading as opioid tolerance can be built up to huge levels similar to how an alcoholic can finish an entire handle of hard liquor where a person with no tolerance could easily die from that much.

11 ng/ml plus 5.6 ng/ml of Norefentanyl for an individual who was prescribed Suboxone. He would have had to be clean for 3-4 days to get his Suboxone prescription from the Dr., and took Suboxone the day he took his urine test for the Dr.. He had to wait 3 days before he could take fentanyl. That's 7 days off of opiates except for Suboxone; which has low mediated effects on the mu and delta-opioid receptors; which are responsible for respiratory depression. This means his tolerance was at baseline like a normal individual who is not an addict, and 11 ng/ml of fentanyl plus 5.6 ng/ml of Norefentanyl (fentanyl analog/metabolite) is 15.6 ng/ml of fentanyl and its analog: which is enough for him to overdose quickly. Body size doesn't matter with opiates, since it doesn't have to be converted in the body like alcohol. The Dr. stated his breathing was normal until he went unconscious. Respiratory depression wouldn't occur until after he went unconscious; which would occur quickly with a substance as potent as fentanyl on an individual whose tolerance was at baseline/normal. He would have stopped breathing and then his heart would stop within minutes. He knew this, and it is why he didn't want to get in the back seat. He knew he swallowed fentanyl and if he got in that backseat and went unconscious they would have thought he was sleeping during the ride, and he would have died before getting help. This is why he refused to get in the large and wide backseat stating he was claustrophobic and stated he had a medical condition so that the officers would call for EMS. They just got there too late, and he unfortunately died. With friends, I have reenacted a large person's full weight continuously on one side of my skinny neck for 15 minutes, and I was fine. My jawbone and collarbone stopped my neck from being compressed on the ground side; which allowed blood and oxygen to reach my brain. I had much more weight on my neck from a knee for longer, and I am way smaller and did not go near unconscious. I did have a crick in my neck afterward though. Many people overdose taking opiates shortly after stopping Suboxone. Years back this happened to me 2 times in 2 weeks. I lowered my dose of pain medication the second time and still OD'd because my tolerance was at a normal person's level. I knew this already, but all the Dr.s told me that it was very common for Suboxone patients to make this mistake. I was in wrestling, Japanese Jui Jit-su, and Brazilian Jui Jitsu for 11 years. Your neck has to be fully compressed on both sides to be rendered unconscious by cutting off the blood flow to the brain. Again, the chest, collarbone, and jawbone prevent the neck from being compressed on the side facing the ground. For me, it was just my collarbone and jawbone, since I have small chest muscles; which were no help at all for me, and I still lasted 15 minutes with no issues.
P.S. My friends monitored me closely while I reenacted this. Don't try this unless you know what you are doing and if you do monitor the person closely. Their neckbone might not be able to take it.
First of all norfentanyl is not active, which is why they took the ratio and not added it up like you did. Second respiratory depression doesn't need someone to be unconscious. Even if we believe that, he should still have been breathing albeit at a low respiratory rate. He stopped breathing altogether which completely suggests he did so because of hypoxia due to neck, chest restraint and his inability to move his diaphragm and intercoastal muscles to breathe

So... at first this sounds very convincing. But I noticed that the graphs only exclusively include people who were alive. It does not include how many people die from what dosage of fentanyl.
If you do a little research, a persons tolerance to the drug, which builds with usage and lowers in abstinence, plays a major role.
What this doesn't say is that per Oxford studies 2mg is enough to kill an adult human male and this measurement is generally accepted in medical facilities across the world (some facilities say 3mg.)
If Floyd was on 11mg of fentanyl that is 3.66 to 5.5 times the medically accepted lethal dose of a non veteran user. Being objective to the case, this leaves a very large possibility that he overdosed. This could include overestimating his own tolerance, accidental dosage, or miscalculating his drop in tolerance between his uses.
Based on the facts accessible, I am actually astonished at the insane level he was at when he died.

Just my observation after seeing lots of evidence, Mr. Floyd didn’t deserve to die for the crime he committed, but it looks to me like everyone involved is partially responsible for the outcome. Floyd committed the crime, resisted arrest & took dangerous levels of drugs, the police were on top of him for too long & the crowd surrounding the scene probably also helped create a dangerous & distracting environment at the time. We are all human & regardless of training I imagine being threatened & screamed at would distract most of us doing our jobs. And that’s merely my opinion. Which others can of course disagree with.

But Floyd also had severe heart disease and chronic high blood pressure as listed in the ME report. When the medical term includes the word 'severe' you're already on death's door.
