      @productions4452 Tradition is not dogma. During the liturgy we are not allowed to sit in the church, exception make the sick people. We are suppose to sit straight as the Lord made us facing the angels, the saints and The Holy Trinity.

      @@soare5182 Perhaps you are right. But the Greek Orthodox synods have not brought this discussion on the table. Although it is the right thing to do to talk when matters of faith are at stake, there is no reason to cause another schism in the church over this.

Just seeing an orthodox church right now gives me an overwhelming sense of calm and peace so thank you very much.

      Ive been to many churches with pews or chairs, and generally people stand for most of the service except the epistle, but will occasionally sit through some less crucial parts of the service like litanies if they wish, especially eldery people and young children

      Also, i'm not sure if people do full metanias in the pews, but they do have little knees cushion things that unfold from the pews in front of you so you can kneel upright and lean of the pew in front for the kneeling part of the service.

      @@orangecobraEU Because it's oldest Church tradition? Why would we sit? By standing up and enduring, not only by enduring but just by standing we show respect towards God. Elderly people can sit, you can sit too, doesn't matter, but everyone usually stands. We have like chairs on sides. You will have to understand that first Church was Holy Apostolic Chatolic Church, which is today called Orthodox, due to 1054 when Catholic Church was created.

    DO THE ORTHODOX VIOLATE THE SECOND COMMANDMENT?
    Here is the 2nd commandment:
    "4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image - any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
    5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them"
    (Ex 20:4-5 NKJV).
    Also in the context (it will be necessary next):
    "3 You shall have no other gods before Me.
    4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image - any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
    5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them" (Ex 20:3-5).
    Traditionally, there are 3 interpretations of what the prohibition may be about:
    1. Creating any images and worshiping them.
    2. Creating images of any gods (including the true One) and worshipping them.
    3. Creating images of false (in particular, pagan) gods and worshipping them.
    The 1st variant is obviously not Christian. It used to be understood this way only during the fall of Old Testament judaism. The fact that such literalism has nothing to do with the command of God is evidenced by the fact that He Himself ordered images of cherubim to be made all over the Old Testament Temple, including in the Holy of Holies. As well as images of a bronze serpent and so on.
    Variant 2 provides for a prohibition on the depiction of any gods, including the true One. But if antiTrinitarians can still be understood, then almost all Protestants are Trinitarians and believe that Christ is the true God (and I completely agree with them). According to this logic, all protestant depictions of Christ are nothing more than a violation of the second commandment. As for the second part of this prohibition - worshiping them, no Christian denomination violates this injunction.
    And here remains the 3rd variant - a prohibition on the depiction of pagan gods and the worshipping these images. And this variant appears to us the most logical. If look at the second commandment in the context of the first, as many biblical scholars advise, it turns out that the second verse is simply a continuation of the first one - "You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image - any likeness of anything that is in heaven above..." or (forgive me in advance for this interpolation, and a clumsy one by the way) "You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself THEIR carved image - any THEIR likeness of anything that is in heaven above..."
    So, the Orthodox cannot violate this commandment TWICE. First, we do not make idols of false gods. Secondly, we do not worship or serve any material objects or anyone or anything at all except God.
    For us icons are an not obligatory condition either for becoming righteous or becoming saved. We use them just because we can. If someone doesn’t consider them helpful for praying, it is up to him not to use them. But not to reject them.
