China's Expanding Aircraft Carrier Capabilities - Analysis of Chinese Naval Exercises
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 фев 2025
- The Chinese Navy's recent deployments of the aircraft carrier Liaoning revealed rich insight on its growing skill in carrier operations. China is deploying its carrier groups further away from home, and increasingly confident in their ability to perform risky operation.

I believe the main task of China's carriers are to support a landing on Taiwan, and form a picket line east of Taiwan to block US forces from reaching the Taiwan theater.
Also, the Philippines Sea is the same body of water as the South China Sea. To me, the Philippines can (starting only recently) call the waters Philippines Sea, but there is no obligation on anyone to say Philippines Sea, and not the South China Sea.
@@katong1953 South China Sea and Philippines Sea are two different bodies of water. The SCS is to the west of Philippines islands, while the Philippines Sea is to the East. There is no dispute about the name of the Philippines Sea, and frankly not much dispute about the name of the SCS either.
GREAT ANALYS!S MAN!!!
👍
years ago it was rumored that once 003 become successfully deployed, a batch of 7 nuclear powered 004 carriers will be built. It’s similar to the roadmap from 052D to 055.
@Lycanthrope "sadly impossible" LOL hopelessly naive
Even if 004 is confirmed to built after 003 the number couldn't be 6, PLAN will only have 1 004 CV/CVN, then they will use it as base for more advanced 004A or 005 so on.
American fleet of total 11 Nimitzs are based on nearly the same technology and experience from the Enterprise, that's why US built 11 Nimitzs in the few decades. China now needs to test new equipments and new naval doctrine on their first carrier. Even the most radical estimation suggests that China would only posess 1 CVN by 2030.
003 and 004 will be non nuclear powered carriers - 004 will be slightly longer and larger than 003 with updated tech
005 or CV-20 will be the first nuclear powered carrier but all 3 types of carriers are based on a common design so u are right - this conventional design is gonna eventually turn into a nuclear powered carrier
@Lycanthrope China's military budget is currently less than 2% of GDP compared to 3.5 for the US and over 2 for both Japan and Germany. Plenty of room even during peacetime.
These exercises is a reflection of China's military development doctrine of taking multiple small, cautious steps instead of having one giant leap. Not sure if the PLAN can take the next logical step by going further east, maybe looping around Wake Island (perhaps eventually even Hawaii!) before heading back to home waters? This definitely will add a new interesting dimension to the concept of "freedom of navigation" which the US is so fond of using when fanning the flames of international conflict.
Oh I must have missed the US taking over a massive area of water that isn't theirs. Also missed the bullying of fishing boats and threats to invade its neighboring countries. Bunch of war mongers
Or maybe they could go the other way, navigate through the strait of Malacca, make port visits at Sri Lanka and Gwadar, conduct some flight operations in the Indian ocean, and head all the way to China's naval base in Djibouti.
PLA navy shouldn't need go any further, as the most likely teathre of operaciones would be Okinawa /Ryukiu islands where Japan is installing long Range missile systems. Eventually US major Carrier groups would stand up nearby west Okinawa bases. The key is to Focus and disable as many Carrier groups as possible at one moment.
@tren133 ok gotcha, so china is allowed to bully its neighbors, and the US isn't allowed to back up those who can't stand up to the bully. Makes sense
Well I can understand going between china and Taiwan being a problem but all the south china sea is not china's an assertive combined stance should be taken by multiple nations to ensure china dose not bully the smaller nations America will continue to be loved and seen as the only obstacle between being pushed around and taken advantage of by developed nations like china and Russia or currupted African political officials who want to oppress the African people and rule for life Americas faults are hidden thanks to these issues America is seen as protectors of the week and enforcers of justice globally.
Very good video- it is clear that the PLAN is actually improving itself by training beyond the 1st island chain and in tandem with anti submarine operations as well as HK bomber support from the mainland
All this training with different branches is great for co-ordinated operations and will give the PLAN much greater confidence and abilities when dealing with potential adversaries in the future - wouldn’t surprise me if submarines were also involved in the operation
Great video as usual
Another fantastic video done with amazingly detailed research. It is satisfying to see the PLAN develop these new capabilities.
Many thanks!
Wow. I did not know China's Carrier Fleets were operating a few miles from GUAM!!
Crazy!!!
That is not concerning. If they are operating near hawaii, alaska or US west coast(Washington,Oregon,California)then it is concerning.
@@pathat8869 They WILL be. They will be. Soon.
@@johnsmith1953x then the Chinese navy can be called a blue water navy. It is still considered a brown water navy
@@johnsmith1953x china needs to breach the first island chain so its navy surface ships, naval drones and submarines can enter the pacific ocean. This can be done by breaching the weakest part of first island chain which is taiwan. Invading taiwan or incapacitating its military would allow china to have free access to the western pacific ocean. After that, Chinese navy ships and submarines could travel to Hawaii without being easily detected. Right now, Chinese navy ships and submarines are easily detected but if the first island chain is breached then they can freely sail into pacific ocean.
@@pathat8869 Doesn't matter with or without Taiwan. China will eventually send not one, but several Carrier Fleets off the coast of Hawaii, Cali, Alaska, Texas and Florida.
From what I heard, the exercise was also for the land based air to practice against finding and engaging a US CSG east of Taiwan as well as for the PLAN ships to defend against air attack from Japan/Phillipines/Guam
Yeah the navy will not be directly participating in invasion of taiwan. The army has amphibious forces that would cross the taiwan strait using military and civilian boats, ships. The air force would fly in airborne forces using military and civilian cargo planes, helicopters, gliders.
@pat hat I imagine blockading (presumably that's their main role against Taiwan) is a direct participation, as is if they use land attack missiles against Taiwan. I imagine they'd use them from the east in part to bypass most of Taiwan's air defense radars and to maintain a consistent tempo of missile attacks
@dkosy the other purpose of having the Chinese navy east of taiwan would be to defeat, repel or delay third party military intervention on behalf of taiwan(US,UK,Australia,Japan). Chinese land based missiles would also strike US military bases in South korea,Japan,Phillipines, guam, australia and Hawaii to deny or delay US Air force. china's land and sea based air defence systems would deny access to US Air force which would keep US Air force at a distance.

@@SgtCandythey don't have that ability. The US has started it's new Cold war build up and has economy twice the size of china's.
Be interesting to see when the J-35 comes out. Rumor has it that they're making catapult, ski jump and land based versions of the J-35s.
@@1ycan Rumors says that the WS19 for J35 is even better that the WS15s for J20, that could be one reason for that.
@Lycanthrope The same reason why the J-10 exists when there's the J-11 / J-16, or why the F-16 exists when there's F-15. The J-20 is a much heavier and costlier jet to operate which makes it overkill in many situations; It makes sense to have a lighter one. J-35 would also benefit from additional economies of scale. As you mentioned, there's the export factor, since it's likely the J-20 won't ever be exported.
J-35 / F-35 type fighters seem to be the 5th gen fighter everyone is trying to make, like the Russians, Koreas, Turks and Indians.
@Lycanthrope yup. They've been showcasing the j31 at various Middle Eastern airshows.

Excellently done, great overview! It’s just a matter of time, Chinese Carrier Battlegroups will conduct deployments on the outskirts of the US mainland. The growth in capabilities and capacity of China’s Navy is unprecedented, the YJ-18/21s are arguably the best ASMs in the world. Not only are the 052/055s excellent at air defense capabilities, they’re absolutely formidable against other ships!
Concordo .Portare le esercitazioni navali a largo delle coste orientali degli USA sarebbe cosa buona e giusta. Questo solo è il linguaggio che gli USA rispettano. Avere sempre e a portata di mano il fucile.
If war breaks out and they do that, the US will just ram a MOAB into its deck and rip it in two.
As an American, I would welcome Chinese Carrier battlegroups operating off the United States mainland. Similarly, I presume the Chinese will equally welcome US battlegroups operating off the Chinese coast. May there be peace amongst us all.

US Navy is essentially a white uniform Air Force based out of ships. A significant portion of US Navy's conventional warfare strategy lingers around defending one or two carriers utilizing a lots of anti-submarine and anti-air warfare ships all of which has a secondary and strong surface warfare capability which is barely used. And the actual offensive anti-surface warfare capabilities are projected by the fighters off the deck.
Chinese carrier strategy / capability seems more like an enhanced variant of soviet ones, where the role of carrier-based fighters were limited to protection of the fleet against hostile aircraft as well as limited extension of fleet's offensive capabilities. "Enhanced" it is, still far away what is needed for achieving a maritime Air superiority.
However, that only counts against superior naval forces like that of US. Unless China commissions at least six more carriers which are at least as big as type 3 and preferably nuclear-powered, China's best bet with present naval Air Force would be to conduct limited offensive operations against Taiwan's Pacific side or teasing Indian naval Air power in the far south of Andamans (a fleet which has almost the similar carrier air capabilities as of now… But with limited support assets / future expansion potential), or any other Falkland like scenario where opponent's carrier-based air power is non-existent/limited and land-based air power is either limited or stationed far away.
you forgot china has anti carrier missiles, its very easy for china to sink all US carriers in minutes using DF21A and DF26A/B , or EJ21 ship /air born anto ship missiles carried by 055 destoryers, or H6K bombers, china does not need too many carriers to defeat US navy, the table has turned around , no one can compete with chinese navy today
Agreed. The lack of fixed wing aircraft-borne early warning radar is a major weakness that the PLAN needs to address.
They have hypersonic missile you can't stop lol...scare now?

40 fixed wing sorties in one daytime period seem completely responsible to me for ski jump carriers.
rumor says there will be at least two type 003 carrier. And type 004 will be different design, probably nuclear-powered.
Hey, excellent video, can you please give me the source for the photo at 17:16 of the 2 H-6Js? It's rare to see them carrying 4 missiles, usually they only carry 2. They're looking mean as hell.
H6 has many pictures.. The wing has carried six large and medium-sized missiles.. Can be found on the internet
Without matured carrier borne fixed wing support assets (EW, Tanker, Awacs and ASW) This sort of operation is difficult to be successful in real application. China has all these capabilities mentioned… But these are either helicopter born or fighters playing the role of a tanker/jammer, limiting the number of aircraft available for strike missions.
As you have rightly pointed out, lack of diversion airfield / second carrier in the battle group means flight operation has to be too careful thus constraint for comfort of an admiral.
World did move bloody fast. Another military industrial complex. Another Cold war. Much hotter than before.
China's CBGs are only for protecting China and not for force projection. People forget that near China, mainland China is China's massive unsinkable aircraft carrier.
I like the way you say those carriers' Chinese names. Pretty accurate...

biggest implication - China has taken the reclamation of Taiwan for a granted future event. Carriers will have less cost-effectiveness than other military assets in a battle of Taiwan (compared to more submarines and land-based heavy fighters. China throwing astronomical numbers of money into carriers means they are just planning for more distant future
越南控制了三十多岛屿,而中国仅仅控制了七个,你们为什么不指责越南
The aircraft carriers are meant to be stationed east of taiwan to deter, repel, or delay foreign intervention. The Chinese navy's main role in a taiwan invasion will be to blockade east of taiwan and delay foreign intervention. The Chinese army will be crossing the strait in hundreds or thousands of civilian ships, boats and hundreds of cargo planes, gliders, helicopters and civilian planes
I would not say flight operations far from land is a flight operation milestone. I would think all pilots assigned to carrier duty can land their aircraft on a carrier. However, it would be a training pilot milestone, overcoming a psychological barrier.
Operating that far out at sea would be more of a fleet operation and replenishment milestone.
I am a bit surprised they had only one frigate for anti-sub picket duties. I would think they would have at least two as well as two nuclear subs.
I bet a lot of people would like to see you describe what a task force to aid Taiwan would be up against. This includes both multiple layers of overlapping detection plus layers of antiship weapons and platforms.
For example Layers of detection, tracking, targeting at the various ranges include satellites real time tracking large military ships from before they leave port (radar, visible, thermal, signal emissions, electromagnetic noise emissions), airborne search, over the horizon land radar, passive & active buoy mounted detectors, undersea sound detectors, fishing trawlers with ex navy personnel equipped with sensors on tethered ballon’s, informants, etc. As the task force approaches, more types of sensors and denser networks of sensors track the ships.
The weapons to defend against includes, df26, df21, df17, then waves of YJ18 cruise missiles from subs, then aircraft, then 240 mph torpedoes, and who knows what else. Could a task force realistically stand a chance? Even when 1000 miles away? Even when still in port?
I imagine a series of attacks at the carriers to eliminate air cover, then 6 bombers each with 8 YJ18 cruise missiles launch all 48 cruise missiles which attack the first aegis destroyer until 2 successful hits, then the balance of cruise missiles reprogram targeting to the next ship, etc. How can the task force survive multiple waves of attacks(it’s not like WW2 where ships can hide and attack range is limited compared to today)?
How far is the range of H-6 modern variant bombers?
Not speaking/understanding Chinese is a big disadvantage for me trying to learn this stuff, but thankfully I have sources like this
Did you hear anything about 055A and magnetic guns?
EM guns are lies. Experiments from both China and US shows EM guns are nothing but toys, they can't match with the cannons that produced during WWI.
Thank you so much for this content. For as much as China's naval capability has increased it seems like no one talks about it. Although I think China will have it problems with supporting its military economically in the future, the naval capability is a security risk to many nations now and in the future. The rate of growth is mind boggling. I think China gets overlooked because it has no modern naval tradition.
Nonsense. China can easily afford their navy.
An EXCELLENT Video on China's PLAN naval forces!
But, I Must state that ALL of these naval assets don't mean anything, without.......Training!
Training a force, naval force included, takes Many years to complete and be assured that it will function Optimally! I'm sure that PLAN forces do train, but it involves the consistent, know-what-you-are doing from Every person from their low-ranking seaman --> to their mid-ranking officer ( I'm sure the higher officers know what they are doing...I hope ), and the ability to be able to move up in rank for not just hard work, but also for ingenuity!

There is one big advantage of a carrier and I hear you saying not using it. I think they vary much plan to there just not doing it why others watch
It would be safer to sail two carriers together to far away places to provide double landing platforms for the launched aircraft flying over enemy dominated parts of the ocean!
China really needs to make moves to get agreements/alliances with more Pacific and North/South American nations for basing rights. Can you imagine how the US would respond if PLAN carrier groups were operating out of say Fiji or Nicaragua ?
So how long until they are more capable than the U.S. Navy?
lol never. Or maybe by the year 2899
It depends on when the US navy will go down....
China CCP should realized they made a huge mistake in building so much Dams around their country and therefore they cannot win any war with any country, if conventional missiles hit the three biggest dams, 80% of Chinese would drown (90% don't know how to swim) and most electrical facilities, electronics , computers and power stations would be destroyed. China missed to be superpower and love by his neighbors, he chose to raise his ego/pride and revenge from his embarrassing defeats from the past by declaring the 9-dash line in South China sea. The Dams are the achilles heel to them.
Honestly I don't want China to fight USA because most Chinese are good people, it is a waste of good human resources, we better compete in exploration of exoplanets rather than kill each other. China should come to his right senses that touching Taiwan or Philippines is not good for him.
Well done China Super powerful Carriers group in SCS. ❤💪💪👍👍👏👏💯💯❤❤
At the rate China builds carriers (3 within 10 years) and considering they were the first batch, it may have another 5 to 7 by 2035 which is a milestone date for a 'fully modern' combat force.

Both types of missile warheads are equipped with radar guidance seekers, infrared image seekers, and AI identification systems, so that the missiles can attack moving targets at sea or land targets. They are dual-purpose anti-ship and land-attack missiles. A new high-performance AI chip is added to calculate the image of the captured target for enhanced recognition, so that the missile has an AI smart missile with a similar eye recognition function. This is why "Xionghang" and "Xiong Falcon" have completed 20 live tests, with a hit rate of 100%.
Both "Xionghang" and "Xiong Falcon" can communicate with satellites, early warning aircraft, and drone. They can also use pre-installed geographical orientation map data without relying on GPS, and use the INS inertial navigation system to navigate to the enemy's target area , start the scanning of the radar infrared image finder to find the target, and the AI eye algorithm recognizes and compares the image parameters of the enemy target in the missile computer to identify the target to attack. AI eyes can identify interference flame shields and false targets, and only attack real targets; because of the AI eye function, missiles are not interfered by enemy electronic warfare, and use high-speed and high-performance AI chips to calculate and filter out enemy interference electromagnetic waves, and can also reversely capture the interference source and report the coordinates of the enemy interference source to the friendly drone and early warning aircraft through the data link to carry out follow-up strikes. The flight computer of the missile can pre-plan the path of flying around to deceive the enemy, and change the attack target through the data link, and carry out coordinated group attack operations with the same missile network.
