  • Croatian composer Stjepan Šulek's Sonata (Vox Gabrieli) vividly portrays the voice of the archangel Gabriel summoning all of humanity to judgment. The piece contains multitudes - lyricism, nostalgia, and anger. This piece has become a standard of the trombone repertoire, thanks in part to William "Bill" F. Cramer, the first trombone professor at Florida State University. Beginning his tenure in the 1950s, Cramer dedicated over 30 years to teaching and expanding the repertoire. He frequently sourced music from Eastern Europe, including this sonata, and played a pivotal role in introducing it to the International Trombone Association for publication in the United States.
