- It's now 2019, the year in which Blade Runner takes place. And while there are no Nexus 6 replicants running around, here's one thing from the film brought to life. Adam and modelmaker Kayte Sabicer reveal the Blade Runner blimp prop replica they've been working on for months!

and to think in the future we will get things like this almost out of the 3d printing machine. they are making some great and fast advancements already because the whole mission to mars and stuff. they want to print most of the tools they need after they land with local material.
@@lucasbiermann257 Someone rebuilt the entire Back to the Future Delorean 1/6 scale to print and paint. The entire level of work is just nuts. Google Did3D Delorean and it should come up. The guy did the backdrops too.

Adams love and passion towards Blade Runner automatically makes him one of the coolest people ever
Great job, Kayte. Your blimp looks awesome. I worked in the BR model shop a couple of workbenches away from Bill George who did most of the construction of the original one, throughout its build. So I can attest to what Adam points out, that your model is far more intricate than the original was. For one thing; the two main screens were just silver-painted scalloped-plastic panels, that TV images were projected onto for filming (as I'm certain you know). So no on-board image generation was needed, like yours has. Plus, filming on a smoke-saturated stage (*cough**cough*) hides an awful lot of flaws. Besides the YES, HEAVY METAL, TAMIYA, APPLE COMPUTER and CINEFEX logos, did you also include STARLOG, OMNI, VECTOR GRAPHIC, ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL, SIG, AMA and CON-AM 27? I'm pretty sure those were all on there too, among others.
I hope you find your answer buddy. You're cool just for witnessing its creation.
My favorite "logo" is the Japanese phrase "[something] spoon is too big" (...のスプーンが大きすぎる) (see at 11:00)

This is the absolute best thing about this channel, watching Adam and a guest maker just geek the fuck out over something they built for 10-15 minutes.
I'm reading "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" and one of the major parts of the story is that almost all the animals have gone extinct, starting with the birds. Owning robotic animals is one of Deckard's hobbies but he dreams of owning a real one if he can just retire enough replicants and collect the bounties. The Tyrell Corporation tries to bribe him with the owl shown in their office.
So, sorry Adam, but no bird poop.
You are right but there are birds in the movie at least in the "Time to die" scene.

Wow! You're certainly correct. I've read the book, but would not have put that together. Good call.
The book goes to great lengths to describe how realistic the fake animals are, however. The whole point of owning animals is as a status symbol and the fake ones are meant to be as realistic as possible. There is even a scene where he goes off into the wilderness and finds a frog, only to discover that it too is electric. In the film, we see how some of these replicants are made and they are bio-mechanical. Thus, the fake birds would still probably produce poop.

As an editor it's easy to end up with a gap, especially if a video file fails to load as what likely happened here. Amazing video and amazing replica!
I thought it might have been a youtube render error but nope. I'd bet this is someone who turned off a video layer for a final render by accident. People make mistakes. Even video editors.

When Adam eventually retires from the spotlight, the museum will be unbelievable. He is one of the best creators and collaborators of our generation, what a legend.

I really enjoyed it. Really sad you didn't get to see it in theatres, I feel it might not have the same impact. Dunkirk was kinda the same, not the same movie if you're just watching it at home.

And that folks is what is called a masterpiece. This is the kind of stuff modern movies are missing, CGI just doesn't cut it. It would be great to see more movies feature miniatures, you just can't replicate the effect any other way. Kubo and the Two Strings is a notable exception, they combined miniatures with CGI to incredible effect. Great movie. The giant skeleton monster was absolutely incredible.
Congratulations on such a flawless execution, I have never seen so much attention to detail in a model. I'm rather envious, I'd love to have that hanging in my bedroom. That and the BR blaster, I've loved that gun since the first time I laid eyes on it. As always, excellent work Adam and crew!

I never cease to be amazed with the things Adam and Tested are able to replicate... but this is beyond what they have done. This tops the Mecha-Glove.

It must have been professionally satisfying for Kayte to work with a legend like Adam, but probably also maddening because his pursuit of perfection can take him in many directions on a whim. To be fair, he certainly is good at time-boxing when there's a hard deadline. However, in this case, there seemed to be no deadline, so it must've seemed like it would never end.
I would work with these two for free and be happy living in a box :)

thought there were only something like three owls left in the blade runner world according to the book (or at least one of the ones i still have somewhere (memory's not that good (i'm old) When asked if the owl was artificial in the book Rachel says "of course it is...only three left in the world) meaning as wealthy as Tyrell is, it's not enough to own a real owl

It boggles my mind that video editing software doesn't have a warning box for this. "Black scene of > 5 seconds detected. Was this intentional?". This is super easy to do in software.

@Tobias Belliard the box in my suggestion asked "Was this intentional?" - if you'd answer [ Yes ], the software would not warn about it again. The idea was to prevent accidents like this from getting released. IMO an additional question is a small price to pay preventing accidents in those *rare cases* when the "crazy artist" wants the viewer to *actually see* complete blackness for more than 5 seconds.
As if Tested does any QA on their videos whatsoever. They are the only large RUclips channel that I follow that consistently has audio and video problems in their uploads. It's honestly kind of ridiculous how frequent and often blatant the issues are.

My grandpa Jerry Allen was the original model maker for Blade Runner, Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers. What a wonderful opportunity it was for a sci fi fan like myself to know someone like him!
I love this but unfortunately without the original video files, I can't do it justice and will have to admire your wonderful work. The blimp was so under-rated in the film but so iconic. Everyone remembers the blimp.
He won’t release the files to anyone either. Tons of the people on the Rpf are giant dbags who love to have nerd circle jerks but when it comes to others maybe wanting to try and create the same thing they turn cia ultra secretive like they’re work is fn original and like they aren’t replicating movie props themselves. Like little man baby’s that don’t want anyone else to have a toy. I will give him the benefit though because I bet someone in the industry that worked on the film secretly gave him the files and that’s a no no or it’s frowned upon. I’ll also give him another one because I’m pretty sure he did sell castings I think of the shell when he first created it but this is the vibe you do get over on that forum.
I once saw the model for Vader's flagship from Empire.
There was no crunchiness. It was bananas.

What I find really funny though, were those huge engines.
They were, like, GU10 halogens.
Too cool. Just a "tiny" extra project... hang the blimp by wire from a motorized cart that rides on a looping rail track suspended from the ceiling.
lordcrunk I think they said they considered it in the podcast, but he said no matter how he hung it you'd only ever see one side at any time, and you couldn't move it and inspect it. He wanted the stand so you could slowly spin it and admire everything.
Adam Savage and Kayte Sabicer have both made some wonderful pieces of art for Tested, but I think this is my favourite of them all. :)

I'd love to get a 3 hours video showing the whole building process and research behind it, it's such a detailed a wonderfully made model, would be such a pleasure to watch. Congrats on suck incredible scale replica !
Did you have to recreate the video that plays on the blimp or did you have a special connection and if so can you share? I've seen BR in the theatre over 20 times including many nights in 70mm on an IMAX screen and I still love it today but one of the best times was at the University Theatre in Toronto when they announced they were closing and would play a double bill of Blade Runner and Mad Max for months as the last feature. On one screening the projectionist had lowered the dialogue track and raised the background sound track so you could hear everything that was going on there including the audio for this blimp. The audio mix can really change a film, even one you've seen many times.

I have been fascinated by this blimp ever since I was a member of the original Dallas test screening of Blade Runner in March 1982. I would kill to have a model of my own. (Ok, not kill - but I would pay good money for one!) I think there's enough people who'd buy one, even at a premium price, to make for a well-remunerated project for someone for several months. Hint, hint, you amazing model makers out there.
But where did they get the original footage for the japanese ads and off-world colonies logo? And isn't it "Shimago-Dominguez", not "Shimagu-Dominguez"? UPDATE: it appears Jason Eaton found and recreated some of the footage, and he also was the one who changed the "Shimago" to "Shimagu" for some reason. Incredible job. Loved to finally be able to the blimp from angles that were never shown in the movie. Also, it makes it so much easier to see the Moebius inspiration (a very similar blimp appears in a couple of of his stories "The Long Tomorrow" and one of "The Incal" books I think).
Adam mentioned they were the original films played on the screens in the movie with the original audio. He must know a few people from the Blade Runner production crew...

This really is amazing! I just recently saw the replica at Warner Bros. studio in California. I thought that was amazing but this is next level. Well done!
As a scale modeler that has a focus on lighting scale models, specifically SciFi models I appreciate the level of detail and effort put into this amazing replica. First, there are not very many female modelers, at least that I'm aware of, so it is very good to see Kayte pull this off in such grand scale. Kayte you are at the top tier of professional modelers. Seriously I can't find the words to express just how impressive your work is. This replica is amazing and I have no doubt that it will be the centerpiece of Adam's collection for a long long time.

You build models? If so then random question, what do you think about the fiber optic lighting - would it be easier or more complicated to do that with LEDs?
@@DisorderedArray Sorry for butting in but Good question.. I personally have done both and think it depends on are you comfortable soldering all those led's and resistors or making one light source and running all the fiber. They both give a different look as well. LED's are very bright compared to fiber. To dim led's down you would need to use pwm from a microcontroller to very the time time between on and off. Basically to get them half bright you would do a 50/50 on off PWM frequency. Then there is the color changing. Could be easier with something like addressable neo pixels.
We had two girls (I'm not being condescending; they were very young women) working in the Blade Runner model shop (original one; not talking about 2049), alongside about 10 or 12 of us guys. So there have been 'female model builders on the west coast' for a long time.
@@neilsmith1145 - thanks for the helpful info! I've been thinking about about very small and lightweight lighting systems for models we sometimes build at work, and had only considered LEDs. But the fiber optics seem to be another potential solution. I might have to do some more research!
@@DisorderedArray Fiber Optic is much easier but has less control. For instance, if you are thinking of being able to run three tiny wires with electricity down to a mini LED bulb, you could then control the color, brightness, and more, but you are running THREE wires which means there is more to go wrong like shorts if some tiny part breaks. Plus most LED RGB bulbs are not that small or small enough. Fiber optic means you can get super small lights and if you group them all to a single light source means you have one single point of failure: meaning one bulb, two wires, and then the color changing disc. Plus, the color disk is so much simpler a fix than having to pre-program EVERY rgb led bulb. You would have to catalogue every LED location and more. So it's just not worth the time of programming and effort of wiring. Fiber Optic is a more traditional and faster/simpler/cheaper way to do it. Hopefully I answered your question.
That is impressive. I tried building model cars as a kid but lost patience just waiting for the glue to dry. I can only appreciate the craftsmanship and patience and ingenuity required to do this kind of model making. Well done.👍👍🇨🇦
