Exploring Holme Fell - A First-time Adventure!

  • A first ever climb up to Holme Fell on a bitterly cold Winters Day. Parking at the Glen Mary car park, I walk back to Yew Tree Tarn, walking through Harry Guard Woods before starting the climb on a steep, shaley path that leads you towards the summit. Progress was slow due to the path being covered with ice but the reward was stunning views over Coniston Water and the surrounding Fells.

Hi Alan. Again a beautiful gem. Yes, you are right the view is stunning from up there and cows are just nice and calm extras behind. About the drone...I also had support for the purchase of the drone from my Mrs.OSM, but she was the one who conditioned that the drone must be purchased and we have not regretted it. Of course, there are regulations related to drones that are not very simple, but if you really want to fly a drone...it's worth it. The worst thing is if you buy the drone and it sits on your shelf, then it's a waste of money. Have a nice week. Sretana and Zac. 🍻

Those views were worth it though, stunning! The lakes at its best 👌🏞⛰️🏔. The friendly belted Galloway cows! The only cows we don't mind seeing on trail, the ones around tarn howes are so use to seeing people they actually came up to us for a fuss once! 😊🐮. Ooh looked very icy on the way down, care needed! Ooooo that looked a chilly one 🤤 That cold wind seems to have been a feature of the winter this year but on this day you did get the advantage of beautiful suuny views. That car park is very handy for Tarn Howes too as avoids a dodgy single track road from the other side. Hi Alan, mid-week is nice for sure with fewer other people there. Especially nice for filming. Sounded so windy! "It always looks easier on the map," isn't that the truth! Two giants throwing rocks... haha😂 I've heard that before. It must have been something you said on a different video. I've heard good things about the DJI drone. Too bad you sent it back! It adds some good flair to videos. I bet it would be crazy hard to fly in those winds. Epic views up there, though! Loved that you got to explore a new place! I'm part of the small and select group!

I think it is about another 47 still to do but I do need to check what I have left as I did so many group walks where I just turned up for the walk with the group and did not take that much notice on where were were actually hiking, unless it was the well known Fells. Well done, Alan, we loved this one, especially the tarn and the fantastic views at the top. We got a bit lost up there, wandered round all the tops and some parts are definitely a bit sketchy. Holme Fell is definitely the 2nd smallest wainwright so as ever your integrity is beyond question! Just wondering how many more wainwrights you have to do and would your last one be around the time we are over in Sept? Mind you, it would be a great excuse to come again. Loved your reference to Eric - he was our great inspiration at first and he had a lovely way of telling the story of each fell. That christmas dinner plate looked a tad over full, tasty though!! Getting out to the Mournes on tuesday, weather looks dry but cold, so looking forward to that. Andrea sends her best wishes, regards, Ashley

I have tried to comment with my email address included but they seem to be being deleted..
Anyway another great film, we always enjoy watching your latest adventures and it would be fabulous join you when you eventually get to conquer your last Wainwright.
Your story of the drone really touched us and we think it's a must to use a drone to capture the remaining Wainwrights to look back on in years to come.
If possible maybe we could help out with your drone dilemma..

Thanks very much real nice of you to watch and I appreciate your kind words. I had a problem with YT just over a year ago when I kept commenting on videos but they kept disappearing - dam annoying. Haha for years I have been humming and haring about a drone and Mrs Metalman has continually encouraged me to get one but I always feel guilty as it is something exclusively for me, especially as (due to her health) she cannot come out and climb any of the Fells with me now. I was offered one by a company, who got my email off my video to review but it was a poor quality drone, only capable of of filming at 720p, so I said my honest review would have to reflect that and turned it down. It will happen one day but as long as I am fit enough to get out and up on those summit tops I am happy enough, cheers Alan

      Hi Alan,
That's all I keep thinking about.. the days when we can't make it up the mountains anymore... but at least we will still have our films to remind us of the days we could..☺
Sue and I were thinking that rather than but you a coffee we would like to offer you, through our company 'Matthew Marsden Furniture' the DJI Mini SE drone you spoke about in your film.
No string, no reviews, no mentions, we just like helping out where we can and it would give us great pleasure watching you complete the remaining Wainwrights capturing every drop of landscape and memory you can.
We completely understand if you do not wish to accept our offer and then we will buy you a coffee or two in return, but, we would be delighted if you do.
