Hi, bought your kit your kit in February and installed it a few weeks later. Excellent product and supplied instructions were great. Total time with lunch break was about 5 hours. I took my time. Going to install the rotors, brakes & bearings I also got from you this weekend. Really appreciate the videos and quality products and great prices, keep it up!
Bought an '85 GL about three months ago. Took it into a VW shop with an owner who drives a Vanagon... explained to guy that I had just purchased and needed to ensure the car was in tip top condition since 100% of my drive time is with my 1 year old boy. Guy NEVER mentioned fuel lines or recommend replacing. He put in a new master cylinder and said I was good to go. Fast forward to last week and a guy ran across the street to flag me down at a red light and yell STOP DRIVING! YOURE LEAKING GASOLINE BAD! I was shocked when I started researching and read the common sense that is replacing fuel lines... mine are TOASTED. What a jerkoff. Could've burned up another beautiful Vanagon with a baby inside (I now carry a fire extinguisher in my van and am watching this video before installing my new lines today :-)) Thanks!
Bonnie Vaca seems common. Also took my van to a German auto mechgabic and told him the same thing and he insisted that they didn’t need to be replaced, that it was internet hype
Well good video, seems i have a 83 vanagon that did burn up😣, im wonderin if i can get it going again, Im glad there are resources like this vid, thanks
fuel line kti is in teh van again cart.... my friend is glad you showed a syncro, fot it was too late for him, FIRE, which apperas to have consumed the wiring harness and fuel delivery system...now he is rebuilding...I'm thinking that is what sent this to the junkyard....
Unfortunately my 1987 syncro Westfalia had an engine fire most likely to older fuel lines and the result was a total loss of the van. Please folks, inspect and change any suspect fuel components.
Vincent, in these early harnesses much of the wiring is white with numbers stamped on it every so far. Over time the numbering fades out. You might search the wiring farther inside the harness on each side to find the number and match them up that way or you might want to invest in a new harness. I can get one made for you. Hope this helps.
Everything is pretty much on the surface. A few of the hoses sometimes run under the intake runners or the alternator, but you can easily fish them through without removing anything.
Probably annoying but I replaced my fuel lines (just in case )but the old were pretty soft and not cracked ,probably because it had the old style fuel inside ?(you know it was standing for aloooooong time )ps sorry for getting the lines locally but your kit is for the injected and mine is carbureted and I would have parts I don't need )
Had an over heated area above the muffler in my '83 Vanagon causing the wiring harness to melt. Had to cut them to try to match before the plastic shroud hardened. Now I see what looks like 8 white unmarked wires. Are these ground wires for the fuel injectors? Does it matter which of these white are reconnected or is each wire carry a different impulse? The cause of the melt down was the wiring harness was not strapped up above the floor above the muffler.
Hey Ken , thank you for getting the fuel line kit so quickly to me. Quick question , the lines located under the drivers seat (expansion tank hoses I think . And on the passenger side as well looking at a diagram) in my van are shot. Is there enough FL to replace those in the kit too ? If not , do you sell an additional kit or line by the foot + more clamps ? Thanks again. Out to have at it ! Feeling quite fortunate that I realized this dire necessity (all the fuel lines) when I did !
You want a different sized hose for the gas tank vent lines. It is 5mm. I sell a gas tank reseal kit that includes the hose and clamps you need. gastankkit1 or 2 depending on what year your Vanagon is.
Hi again Vanagain , hey Ken , late response to your reply … I’ve looked and looked on your site and can’t find the kit you’re referring to . Could you send me a link like last time ? Not sure why I couldn’t find the fuel line kit when we ordered the first time either. Thanks!
+Gerald Ward They didn't last for 30 years. Many, many Vanagons have been lost to fire over the last 20 years that I have been working on them. This is due to the fuel lines leaking and then there is some ignition source in the engine bay. Just because your van didn't burn up doesn't mean the fuel lines were good for 30 years. It means that you didn't have an ignition source in the engine bay. The lines we sell are German and I have checked them after 10 and 15 years and they still seem good but nothing lasts forever. Checking them every five years is just cheap insurance against a fire.
Hi Ken. Question...I have a bad exhaust smell coming from my van. Smells like that old stinky pickup you pull up behind at a red light once and awhile. Is it possibly the return line? Any ideas? Gas mileage is perfect, newish FPR, newish fuel lines, timing is correct, newish o2 sensor, newer temp 2 sensor, cat isn't blocked according to a muffler shop. Hate the smell when I'm in traffic, drive thru, or dropping the kids off at school in the parent line...or worst yet when you want to trick or treat in the van and drive slowly with the slider open but stinks terribly. Any ideas?
+Gerald Ward I prefer the screw type because you don't need a special tool to install them. Just a screw driver. I could make another kit with the crimp clamps, and sell the tool too, I just hate to make customers buy a special tool to do a job once.
@@craigkucing9779 True. There is always a point where you stop though. Some folks do not even attempt a job because that can't do everything perfectly. There is always a balance.
you have prof of the lines turning hard as a rock in three months? As I have had my full lines from napa on my van for 8 years now and they are not hard as a rock. I no expert by far just saying. Mechanic for more then 20 years now had my van since 1996
That happened many years ago to me. Installed a piece of coolant hose and it turned into a stick. Sorry I didn't keep it to prove myself 15 years later. Who knew I would need to? 😁
I tried getting fuel line from them but it has been a long time ago. The size wasn't quite correct. Not sure of long term on because of switching to German hose shortly after that.
@@VanAgain Can you tell me why the German hose is that much better? Btw i live in California and with the smog laws making it hard. 1985 westy with 2.1 8 years later making me go to the smog ref for timing. lol
It has to be the way they process the rubber. I am not a chemical engineer but I have experienced rubber made in Brazil (where the rubber actually comes from) that dries out and cracks up in less than a year. USA made rubber is better, but German rubber seems to last the longest. I have seen it last over 30 years and still be fine.
Good advice. Just ordered the kit. Got an 83 Westy three weeks ago and it needs everything. It’ll be fun bringing it back to life...

Tank you for the very informative video.
Drness.
You can change the fuel lines to the tank without driving the tank as I've done it. It wasn't easy but it is doable

Thanks for the great info and kit...an order will follow soon ;-)
His tick click sucking thing he does between sentences is ridiculous.

thanks for the video i have a problem to start my vanagon i have to disconet the neg or positive cable from the pump and, then its start.
Hey Ken, to you need to remove any other bits and pieces of the engine or is everything pretty much accessible like it is? Keep up the good videos!
Do you not have a auto focus camera?
It is a phone. I always have a very high end phone but auto focus is made to track human faces not fuel lines. 😃
grate advise

And … my van is a 1989 - is that all you need to know ?
Meagain ,,, is removing the tank on my 2WD as much a pain in the butt as is the Synchro ? Thanks again
One MORE thing , my kit didn’t come with directions. Is this video what you point people to ? I mostly just want to make sure I don’t miss a hose.
Why did the original fuel lines last for 30 years but your new ones will only last for 5 years?

do you still sell this kit?

Most likely the catalytic converter needs to be replaced with a new one. When they wear out inside they can make that smell.
@@VanAgain Thanks!!!
Why do you use screw claps instead of crimp style?

25 years ago there was no "ethanol" in the fuel.
Ethanol, not "ethanol".

A lot of worthwhile work to not clean up the hold-down bracket.
You have to stop somewhere. Don't let perfection get in the way of good enough.
@@VanAgain It is not perfection to do a thorough job. No different than lining up the clamps. "Just showing you give a crap".
