First thing I do when buying any 10+ year old vehicle (esp VWs) is remove ALL grounding points and vigorously remove rust and corrosion with Emery paper. This can eliminate a myriad of present and future gremlins immediately!
Wow Ken, this video is so helpful! It gives me confidence to tackle some diagnostics and repairs on my 1990 2.1.Thank you! I’m ready to diagnose and fix (order parts from you) the slight idle surge after about two minutes from a cold start. If I turn it off and start again, no surge. Any ideas ?
4:52 "Alright I'm fixin to cuss" Thanks for the heads up. :) Hey so I'm having a surging issue. Once the van is warmed up. I've found no noticeable vacuum leaks, the electric ground, under the HALL seem clean enough to me. My check of the digifant (2.1) did reveal slightly less resistance for the fuel injectors. Yet I doubt that has any influence on causing the surge. Maybe its sending a false signal to inject fuel. I doubt this as if I disconnect the idle control valve, it does not surge. So I'm wondering is there a way to test the idle control unit? Let me know if there is anything else I may have missed. Cheers.
I have 1983 with 1.9 engine I need to now when you turn ignition switch on and engine off does the 3 LED LIGHT S. FOR OIL AND Alternator and o2 light come on and when you start engine all light should go off.?
Yes on to show they work. Then off once the engine is running. You may have to give a small rev to get the alternator and oxygen sensor light to go off.
@@mohsengobran7913 The oxygen sensor light isn't like a check engine light. It counts off so many miles and then comes on to remind you to replace the oxygen sensor. There is a little box by the spare tire that you can push a button on and reset it. So if it is off I would not worry about it.
1. Radio shack is out of business! 2. no mention of fuel rail pressure WHEN PUMP IS OFF! 3. Is it supposed to hold pressure when pump is off? 4. Back flow check valve in Pump?

Cant tell you how many times thats been my issue after throwing parts at a problem. Finally cleaned them all!
can you recommend a map of all these grounding point? because I wanna do that.
The Vanagon Bentley has wiring diagrams that tell you the location of the grounding points.
that was great i allready have that book and iam having problems with 2.1 1990 vangon you showed a simple a simple way of trouble shooting
Thank you ken. I get a slight buck every once in a while while driving. hopefully this info helps me figure it out.

If you turn the engine off and then restart do the symptoms go away for a short time?
Great video! Do you have a picture of side 24.20 and 24.21?
You should just buy the manual. Believe me, you will need more than just those two pages. :-)
Great info Ken 👍
Hello i have 2.1i microbus ,not starting ,I don't know weather is a fuel pump or injector,cz it doesn't open injector
The injectors are opened by the ECU based off of a signal from the distributor. So either you have a faulty ECU or distributor.

In my van only oil light and alternator light came on no o2 light so I am worried it will not pass smog check next time
