I'm loving these videos! this one made me stop and think about which places are important to me and that I'd like to share with the world! pretty cool!
So cool, thanks for sharing!! I've always wondered about all these things, I'm so glad you two are just as curious AND in a position to share the knowledge. Keep it up!
Larry Fournillier at the end it gives a link to apply for a trekker .. surely Trinidad must have some awesome areas to explore??? maybe the Madamas Waterfall area ?
Thanks Nat and Lo! Just introduced my elementary students to 20% Genius Hour in STEAM Class, and they are pumped! Plan to show them some of your videos next for inspiration!
Nat and Lo Yes I did! I liked the comparison between the neighborhoods and the parts; it was very informative :) Wonderful to see how a computer fits in such a small piece of hardware, like the Nexus 5!
You should totally use that for another trip. Had no idea they had people/animal versions of doing the pictures. I just assumed Google made a mini vehicle to do this that we were being kept in the dark about. Nice Video #NatAndLo
Hey learnt a lot about "street view/trekker" through this clip, can see how it might be good for kids in schools. Thanks for taking the time to document and share.
I wonder why the system goes straight up. It could be shaped as an arc that hangs the camera over the operator's head in order to bring the center of gravity forward close to the core of the body.
cplai Great question, the basic camera electronics are located under the big beach ball shaped camera head. Those electronics are where most of the upper weight is located and we could't get it out of the operator's way and and get the camera over the person's head. The result is not as bad a you might think. With the weight on their backs, the operator's tend to lean a little forward and this does a pretty good job of putting the center of gravity (where the operator feels the weight) over their hips. That said, I think a cool curved trekker mount would be cool.
Kathleen Lewis Lo and I always wondered about it, too! (It's like all our minds were all asking the same questions inside all our heads at the exact same time...freaky. ;) ) - nat
Learnt something cool and interesting. Thanks for your efforts in putting together this video. Interesting presentation. Would look forward to the upcoming videos.
this is so great! it kind of creates less class separation but i can't help but think how many people will begin to use the technology that live close to where they want to "go" ... Just a little cause and effect thought...
Mapping the entire world by photographing every street... sounded like a BHAG, but Trekker Loan Program made it possible. " 'Scary' just means the opportunity is big enough." (quote Jenny Blake) Thanks for all the courage I have grown out of by seeing the moonshots/roofshots played out.
In all honesty..... seeing beautiful 360 images of amazing places that I know i will never actually see with my own eyes... really just makes me very depressed.
Hei! I'm planning to buy Gopro box with 6 cameras end make a pictures in the buildings (shopping centres, hotels,museums..... with 360degrees) whith google street view. How and where I can download it-this programm? And how I can upload the photos? I spend all day and can't find it. HELP with info!!!
Alluminium is a great material for things like this, easy formable cheap and strong, carbon is kinda expensive for a thing which most probably wilk break quite frequent
3d printing could make super strong light-weight parts, composite materials would be great for the main structure. @ pingu van bree - where are you getting carbon from? composites can be made by combining any material, carbon is not a requirement.
I used carbon as one of the simpler examples, the cons of 3D printing is that its hard to shape alot of shapes and goes quite slow, yes there are faster ways but its just a little underdeveloped. Also filament is quite expensive. For these backpacks 3D printing is just too unstable. Yes it can be strong but if you make mistakes you pay for it, in money and time. Alluminium is superb for this kind of projects, because you can change thing way easier. Other composites are still not really cheap and easy to work with, because with alot of composites you have to mold. This is why i think their choice of material is good. But if you can tell me some better examples, feel free, im always interested in new materials and stuff. hopefully hear back from you :) i think they want things to be Easy to fix because complexer Construction can Be a Pain in the ass to make and repair. also aluminium is already quite lightweigth
If durability is a fear with polymers and composites, then they could experiment with other metals. Aluminum and Magnesium are very popular in industrial manufacturing right now.
maybe in the 90s. Nylon and PROPER carbon fiber materials have a higher tensile strength and are much lighter than metals. Google is should not be worried about cost of just a few units, especially if it cuts weight in half.
Cool Video. I wish I could borrow a Google Trekker Camera for a day or two. The reason, to give the individual a glimpse of our roads and dirt roads in Iberia, Missouri. - Hwy K, Iberia, Missouri, - Bethany Rd and some other nearby dirty roads of Iberia, Missouri. Exploring and getting data for the world. Ronnie
I've always been fascinated by the google maps development team and the ground truth team, the people responsible for the api's and the material design stuff, doubt that will make an exciting video tho.... I love Lo's kcrw hoodie btw :)
Well that was interesting, thanks NatAndLo I have wondered if the trecker has some kind of Stabilization- thing , you know to keep the images on some kind of flat plain, when walking around on odd surfaces. (Or is this done in post prod?)
wildwombat i'm not the engineer of these systems but what i think happens is that since the system has gyroscopes and accelerometers it knows how much it's tilted, and then like you said, can adjust for that when the images are stitched together. -nat
Great! Thanks for sharing with us how the street view works :) If it´s possible, could you please show us how is the challenger for the team to improve constantly the Google Analytics to follow the changes of the interaction behavior of custumers an new tecnologies. Thanks!
A wonderful insight into the world of Streetview and the Trekker - I'd really love to borrow one of these, one day! I love the Streetview program and all the amazing places we get to explore as a result of it - it's an incredible use of technology and imagery. Thanks Nat and Lo! Loving the new series #natandlo #google #streetview
it a beautiful idea......but how do I go back to the old street view? after typing a location in London, not all but a few places now have this pavement view and for some one who needs to reference the streets and turns its really annoying, not user friendly as the original street view. Anyone know if I'm missing something or is this how its meant to be now? anyway around it?
whoo..., love u guys, this was really knowledgeable, fun mixed with knowledge, would love if you could give us a insight about google hiring procedure & training. Thanks
My 20% project would definitely involve Google Street View. Imagine being able to walk around with cardboard anywhere in the world. If the cars and trekkers would photograph insanely often, like 30 or 60 fps then you could use it kind of like a movie. So if I put on my Cardboard and jumped to a Street View high fps place I could actually walk around and see the world. And no matter how fast or slow I walked it would still feel sort of real because of all the frames and the software would just adjust and skip frames depending on your pace. The coolest would definitely be if it was photographed with a car driving at a pretty high speed and then I would walk through the scene. Things would move in slow motion. People would appear to stand almost still. I could walk past them, walk faster then cars and so on. Please make this happen! At least in a few places as a test.
This was very cool to see. Thanks for sharing. I don't use a lot of Google products but I'm 100% a fan of the mapping products and am so impressed with what Google has been doing in the map data collection space and the imaging space. Things like the El Capitan thing are amazing.
I really like Google Maps and Street Views, they're my favourites and I'd like to see more people captured in your camera. Its nice to see their happy faces. Let's have more views of Third World as well. They are interesting to say the least, and Google Maps can help promote their well being by showing how destitute their lives can be. . .thank you.
Nat and Lo Yes! I'd love to see an episode on voice technologies. There has been some incredible improvements in speech to text and text to speech in the recents years and it would certainly be a great thing to cover.
First: Awesome Video, I think this could be the start of a truly interesting RUclips-series! :) Second: I'd really like to learn something about "Project Arc", because I think that it has some amazing potential to revolutionize the smartphone market.
Would be a bit crazy but: Doing the renting-thing with difficult law situations for streetview (ex. germany) - could Google give the right to say that not google decided to do 360° photographs there, but the people who rent streetview-hardware and google is only giving the opportunity to let the user do that... after a bit more thoughts... completely off-google - so it's only on google based software + hardware, but hosting and everything else is in the hand of the user... to have it completely not at googles side if it comes to difficult law situations
Im interesed to know why in kosovo google stret maps not work ,. in macedonia work, albania work .. serbia work ,. montenegro work , but kosovo is also a state why to not come in kosovo?
Hey Nat and Lo! I love the videos, but was wondering if you two work at Google, what are your official positions there? Your work seems amazing, and (Judging by the comments) really affects people. This kind of work is something I aspire to do too.
still does not answer the questions on how they did it? did they use titanium or aircraft aluminum for the frame. what kind of batteries lithium ion, lead acid or betavoltaic? the development of blackbox system?
Maybe the trekker could go to the Philmont Scout Ranch just south of Cimarron New Mexico? It's the world's largest camp at over 151,000 acres. Lots of miles of hiking trails all starting at 6,700 feet and going up to the top of Mount Baldy which is just over 12,400 feet. It would definitely need to go to the top of the Tooth of Time as well. And with the neighboring land agreements, one could potentially hike in any of 250,000 acres. They have back country camps that specialize in various outdoor Scouting-related activities. More info: www.philmontscoutranch.org

Very interesting & enjoyed it. A good learning experience. Helpful to know you can "borrow" one of these.
Really awesome video. Maybe I will apply to borrow the trekker
will love that top part has a Helmet lmao....
Nice job!!! congrats!
Why are they using STEEL parts? They could dramatically cut the 42lbs weight with composites and plastics.
