    Street view is one of my favourite pieces of modern technology, to make most of the developed world virtually accessible to so many is just fantastic.

      Not just the "developed" world. You can go to most cities and many towns and even villages in the world with it. Welcome to Santiago of Chile, any day you wish. I recommend the long axis of avenues Apoquindo, Providencia and Alameda (Libertador O'Higgins) to take a long, long view of my city. 😀

      I was thinking of "developed" as in has roads and cars and stuff, but I like being able to explore both these kinds of places, the famous and rich cities as well as the small gems!

    My favourite feature of street view is the timeline the fact you can go back and look at older street view images but it’s only available on desktop. Would love them to introduce it to the iphone

    Street view was how my wife and I decided to go to Iceland for vacation, it was completely unintentional and we were just looking at random places in the world, but when we saw Iceland it was too unworldly not to go.

    I wish they would advertise for these jobs through their careers sites for nerds like me, wanting to do this in our local communities. I'll walk or cycle wherever they want, because what a way to help yourself and your own community and have something to feel proud of. Also, who else immediately went to look at the Faroe Islands in Street view? lol

      My ex has been working as a mobile mapper for almost 10 years now for Tom-Tom (a Google Maps competitor) but it's the same gig as what you see here. It's a really cool job, and he's gotten to see all corners of North America. They're always looking for new mappers!

      Some coundries have restrictions on imaging public places.
      For exmaple streeet view isn’t allowed here in india.

    For several years now they've been trying to develop street view into a full 3D game-like experience. I bet in another 15 years, it'll get there.

    2:08 You get street view all around the US and Europe, and then you have us Germans who, for some reason, have a problem with their house being in a picture, which is why you have barely any street view there.
    We love paperwork so much that we find problems where there are none and make laws around them.

    As invasive and sometimes even evil Google is, I really love their Street View project. I love sitting down and looking at the streets of other countries. Plus not only is it incredibly useful in the present when you're planning a trip, but it's going to create a fantastic history of the world as time goes on.
    I also remember a time when Google Maps had angled satellite views of most places, and you could spin the camera around in 90° increments. That was quite useful as well. Unfortunately, they hid the feature several years back when they introduced the crappy blobby Google Earth mode.

    I've used street view often to check street signs whether I'll be able to stop/park my car, especially in crowded downtowns where it can take a bit of preplanning to get around. Thanks Google!

    I grew up in Mountain View during the time it started and would always be fascinated when one would pull up by my car. It’s pretty cool seeing their technology being tested when you’re out and about in the area.

      @@joeys8701 Independent companies wouldn't have the levels of economy of scale that google has. It would take them multiple years just to R&D the costs of making their own specialized camera equipment, facial recognition software, and imaging algorithims. An independent company could reach the same level as google but they certainly wouldn't be able to finance it and get it to the same quality as google.

    Google needs to get the equipment even lighter, then hire thru-hikers &/or section hikers to use a Street View rig to map the AT, PCT, CDT, etc. That would be a real boon for hike planning, as well as forestry efforts, etc.

      The technology isn't there yet, All that Lidar, Cameras, Battery, CPU are powerful and draw a lot of heat, and heat sinks are big and heavy.

      @@AllenHanPR technology is kinda there if you lower the bar. No need for lidars, no need for 100MP cameras, no need for any heavy on-device processing.
      There's consumer-grade 360 cameras that produce fairly good images with size/weight of smartphone (Insta360 GO, GoPro MAX -- both under 200g). It's should be totally feasible to build a bit better version of that with 4 cameras instead of two for more seamless stitching, data being saved into M.2 SSDs instead of microSD, etc.

      2008 for me. I had a digital camera in 2008. Whatever google street view was using back then (even by 2008 standards) went into full potato mode because that image is TERRIBLE

    I would think that some countries could gather enough Street View information to help with their potential future military operations in a foreign country. That's probably the case with Russia on Ukraine.

    I’m 51 and have never flown due to being highly claustrophobic. This allows me to visit different places I would otherwise never been able to see. I know it’s not the same but I do appreciate it.

    Would be interesting to mount that atop a small plane and fly it around for pilots, and for lower altitude sightseeing. There are planes licensed Experimental where this would not be as hard to do. Email me for details.

      Drones bro. Part 137 is where it’s at for any future aero imaging.
      Amazon will have their own drone program delivering to a locking box in your yard soon. Not hard to imagine where Google will go with that. There’s a reason they haven’t asked flight schools to strap these to their 172s or Emirates to share their low altitude landing gear cam footage yet 🤣

      You really don't need Google's rig to take pictures for Street View.
      You can strap an "Insta 360 One X" (weight: 115g) to your car, bike, plane or your backpack and start making your own "blue lines" on the map.
      Just record a video, upload it to Google, and they will extract individual pictures and make them part of Street View.
      Done it myself. Lots of fun. :O)

    I use google street views to see my old demolished house where we were evicted. It's now a bunch of mess with no vegetation or anything because they didn't get rid of the base floor.
    We got new house and it's fine now so don't worry.

    i used to drive a big truck. GPS was 2500 euro and only showed arrows. i had 1000 euro worth of maps. i'm so thankfull for google maps. it's my default GPS app.

    Thank you @Google for Streetview. I travelled to Svalbard near North Pole after I saw on Streetview how amazing it was there. Google had been using snowmobiles to show us the nature and places.

    Recently I saw that they now have sponsored places on maps. When you zoom out, they stay on there.

    Unluckily, I got caught wile shovelling rocks at my house. I thought it was a weird car with a bike mounted but it was a google car. I wish it could be taken off.

      Click "Report a concern" and have yourself blurred. Also when google drives past your neighborhood again the images will only be available in historic street view on Google Maps, not on Google Earth.

    Most arabic and more less known countrys only have satellite view and no streets view
    And the satellite images are about nearly 20 years old idk when was google built
