?? seriously, no recent player is praised for funk rhythm playing. it was already huge in the 70s and this video is not even from the 70s. Ross was good at what he was doing but he didn't really pioneer this style or anything lol. (R.I.P)
@@MrPartch Uh... First, Cory Wong of Vulfpeck is all the rage these days in the funk realm and while he is a good guitarist he unfortunately gets a lot of credit as being the originator of licks and approaches which are firmly based in previous decades, hence my comment. Second, no one said that Ross "pioneered" anything but he added an up-front intensity and was thus a natural link between guys like Nile Rodgers and the current crop of Vulfpeck influenced bands. (And Nile picked up things from guys like Cornell Dupree, Steve Cropper, Jimmy Nolen, Curtis Mayfield, etc). Moreover, Ross was a solid instructor who helped to bring the sound to a new group of guitarists who in his time were obsessed mostly with shred and metal.
A yr behind but I revisit Ross all the time. Cory Wong is definitely treated like he invented funk. No he didn’t. He’s definitely great at it but he’s an imitator of those that came before him. Nile Rodgers, overlooked Ross Bolton may he rip and many many more that didn’t seem to get their dues.
@@Utube-s8m Cory Wong is quite one dimensional player. None of his stuff is colourful or has the tina turner, james brown vibe. It's just all about the 16th chick chicka and a floppy hand that looks like a dead fish
@JackR24123 I just have Never gotten anything out of Cory Wong and his type of white boy fast funk strumming. It's got 0 soul or feel to my ears. But many people seem to think he's the 💩. Well, I'd agree his playing is that to my ears. 😂
Best funk tutorial EVER! After trying hard to practice using other well known guys' videos, I failed. But this one saved my life. Ross, you are the best! We miss you, hope you're doing well in Funk Heaven!!!
I just transferred my VHS of this video to DVD. This is the definitive Funk guitar instructional video. There is no funky stone left unturned here. It will improve your rhythm playing even if you are a seasoned player. Every guitar should take the time to master all these techniques it will help you no matter what style you play.
I had Ross as a teacher in a live playing class at MI back in the 80's. I'll never forget his rendition of "Freeway Jam", completely blew me away. Great teacher and player! He will be missed.
This video is a goldmine of guitar playing. A great guitar teacher I had years ago told me to check it out and I've been coming back to it ever since. If I ever feel like my rhythm playing is getting bad, I come to this video for a few days and it brings me back to shape. There's always something new I get from it every time too!
He was a very inspirational player and a great teacher...I just got to know that he passed away recently and felt super sad..he was one of those ppl who cud touch u,even if ur watching just a recorded tape..I hope he is in a funk heaven!
This brings back memories.i was 12 when i studied guitar with this vid it despite all the dvds i saw it remains the most effective straight forward video ever released.you really have to have just two working neurons and listen to him to become a good guitarist..now i learn by a comment below he is gone..a great great spirit
Rest In Peace Ross, I just can never take the image out of my head of 60 people Iv'e never seen smile so bright In my life when you played for the classroom. Truly inspired everyone. Gifted human being.
The only guy that really broke down the 16th note part of funk. Most just give you some tab and tell you to just play and not understand. This guy helped my funk strumming (and therefore my RnB playing as well) so much, because I started thinking about rhythms, and my wrist would be in constant motion, regardless of if I was actually hitting the strings or not. Great teacher
i wish i could personally thank you ross. every time i'm feeling stuck i watch this video and write like 20 new riffs. and after i write every funk song, i go back to this to see how i could make it better
hi there ROSS,, THISis sleeyo from Italy and I do believe YOU ROCK both as a guitarist and A TEACHER,,,you're so simple and straight in teaching guitar ,something never seen or heard in my entire life,,,I got your book on Amazon and tonight I thought to check to see whether I could get you on youtube and I am so glad that I FOUND you,,,,
Damn , i never thought i would play funk like that, thanks to this video now i improved my funk style, this guy is very very helpfull and a great teache
after many years of guitar journey i have come to 2 techniques that allow me to play any music: funk rhythm guitar comp and economy picking. these 2 techniques allow me to play along with any music.

This is fantastic! I bought his book from the Hal Leonard series but let it sit for a long time. This is much better than the book. I was always weak on playing tight, fast, rhythms, but I just got a Jam Man looper with a built-in metronome so I'm gonna start taking this part of playing more seriously.
Dont be sad because he is by far the best funk teacher ever. And its Is great thing he existed i still learn from him and he inspires me and many others so please be happy. His existence made a good difference in the world thats what matters.
I see I see. I guess the best way would be to just improvising counterpoint melodies. I'm definitely trying this out at my next rhearsal. Thanks for replying!

Oh, very sad, didn’t know he passed. He lives on with us. I have the original VHS tape that I learned with in the 90s.
