Easily the best guitar teacher on the internet. I've been playing for 16 years and Paul has taught me more in 2 months than i've learnt in my whole life.
And even more difficult, english is not his main language, he's dutch. Can you speak a foreign language and play guitar maintaining the rhythm? I sometimes can't do one, let alone the two.
Joshua Nnachi I can barely sing and play normal chords at the same time! Let alone, add accent beats, syncopate, add the pinky accents, add single line rhythms, and slide, all while talking a non native language. Amazing
I remember how these funk rhythms confused me so much. Why? The muted ghost notes. IMO the advice "just add ghost notes in between" is really what makes it way more difficult than it is because when you hear them you tend to ignore them and just concentrate on the melody and that is the real issue. When you play them you absolutely need to be aware where they are and what rhythm they are in - just play them like regular notes. One needs to unlearn to hear just the melody and hear the ghost notes between.
The ability of this guy to stack up useful content in the least amount of time is unsurpassable...This six minutes are a whole CATHEDRAL of knowledge. Amazing!!!
Funk is the most fun. One day our band was sitting around after practice. I randomly started slapping the guitar, some rob scallon style slap stuff. Then my friend quickly joined in with some groovy chords and rhythms like yours. Our drummer quickly caught on, and did some sexy hi hat action with a consistent kick on the on beats, and our bassist pulled out a nasty slappy bass line. As soon as our keyboardist pulled out a funky bluesy synth solo, we were in the zone.

I unintentionally taught myself funk guitar. I always found the "ghost notes" effective as a rhythm guitarist in a band without a drummer/percussionist. The key is in your strumming hand. I appreciate this is above and beyond what Paul could actually fathom, this is super informative and just flat out awesome on every level. I have the skills to play many riffs like this, but it's just from what I've pieced together over the years of being untrained and learning sloppily. If I can tighten things up like this across the board, I'd actually start to think of myself as a somewhat decent guitarist.....
I don't relly need this tutorial but I wish I had seen it 10 years ago. :D I love your super practical way of explaining music in general. Often tutorials are overcomplicated and to theoretical. You don't need a lot of theoretical background to jam and have fun. Muscle memory does the trick without even realizing what is happening. :D Don't get me wrong a theory background is usefull but not necessary to create music.
Just wanted to say that when I stumbled on the Squier vs. ST-62 vs. Custom Shop video, I immediately fell in love with Fiesta Red. Had my eye on an ST-62 CIJ on Reverb, but found a MIM limited edition player Strat at Guitarcenter on sale for $750. It’s got fat 50’s pickups and a roasted maple neck. I didn’t love the roasted maple at first… I wanted the classic rosewood… but it grew on me. At any rate, just saying you inspired me!
@@MarcelVLafonde From the moment he starts playing at least, it's one take, but it's not too long and he has been doing it for years, practicing a lot, doing it a lot. He does make tiny errors like forgetting to play the E and in older videos he'd not always keep to 4 beats or the tempo in between playing. It's easier with drums to tell you where the 1st beat is and what the tempo is. Well... less insanely difficult. Talking and playing is as difficult as playing the piano and singing and some people will just not be able to do it without programming every note and combination in your brain as a unit and that just takes forever. I'm sad to say I'm one of those people, which is why, as a singer songwriter I learned to play rhythm guitar.

I would love to see more videos like this. This was an excellent lesson, great method, keeping the rythme going and gradually increasing the difficulty and intricacies. So much fun to be able to jam along with you whenever I feel like it now.
Thanks for this great lesson Paul. I find the most challenging part of playing funk, is the muting of the strings. I'd love a lesson strictly on that. How to mute while playing single lines, how to use the fingers that are not pressing down strings to mute the others.
This interactive tutorial-style is such a great teaching method for me. Very awesome video, once again. Thank-you.
i was playing along thinking “hey i’m better than i thought” and then i got about halfway through and realised i have no idea how to play a dominant 7 lol
Watching/listening to him talk us through it while playing put a smile on my face. Tooolll cooooll!
I love your super practical way of explaining music in general. Often tutorials are overcomplicated and to theoretical. You don't need a lot of theoretical background to jam and have fun. Muscle memory does the trick without even realizing what is happening. :D
Don't get me wrong a theory background is usefull but not necessary to create music.
You can do any part of it. It all sounds good, even without the extras. The basic funk rhythm sounds good.
Instruction how to summon James Brown.
I just funked my guitar so good.
This video is gold , just play with him and had one step at a time everyday and quicker than a bunny you'll be playing with him !
I literally thought yesterday to find a video on how to funk
The coolest lesson ever!
Damn, gotta be difficult to do that in one take hahah.
it's just an editing technique
Pretty sure it is one take. Paul is the man
@@Gwyn1stborn It very well could be! haha
