Cleaning Chrome With Oxalic Acid - Vintage Bicycle Restoration

- In this video, as requested, I show how I tend to clean up the rusty chrome bike parts with Oxalic Acid.
Warning: Use at your own risk. It's nasty stuff. I won't take responsibility for your actions.
A weaker solution is, in my opinion, better because you can leave the parts in the solution for longer without any adverse effects. Clean parts with a soft bristle brush or a fine wire brush to avoid scratching the chrome. Rinse parts after and dry them thoroughly. Protect the parts after, for example, spraying with WD40 or waxing.

Oxalis acid occurs naturally in rhubarb leaves. An old way of cleaning copper pots and pans was to boil some leaves up in the pots.
Tip use an aquarium heater to keep the water warm and it doesnt have to be scrubbed off and cleans much much better. Thank me later.
Oxalic acid is the same active ingredient in the kitchen cleaner Bar Keepers Friend. Does a great job returning the sheen to stainless steel and enameled cast iron.
For people reading this comment - DON'T use Bar Keepers friend on enameled steel or cast iron. I used it to clean the stainless steel handle on an enameled tea pot, got some on the enamel by mistake and now I have permanent streaks on the enameled sides and bottom of the teapot. It didn't remove the enamel but it removed the gloss on every area it touched.
Is that right? Hmmm. I have an old engine block that needs cleaning. I'll try some on that.
I should make a correction to what I said above - barkeepers friend won't damage bare cast iron but it can damage the enamel on the cast iron.
Nice video. Thanks taking the time to create and share it.
Very good restoration bro 👍👍👍👍👍
This video would benefit from being cut by several minutes. Perhaps take one or two items that were in a sorry state, like the lamp bracket and concentrate on those. I would also recommend wearing gloves when using your polisher.
I actually cut quite a bit out to start with ha. Point taken though. I did just want to point out the limits of what it does. Gloves with anything spinning is a bit hit and miss with me. I just don't want anything getting caught up in the wheel.
Good working method, thanks!!
Any luck shooting clear after cleaning?
Over chrome? I've not tried that.
Any touch up paint that can be used for the spots with no chrome?
Ooo now that's a good question. I'm not aware of any but maybe there's some of those touch up pens available in a chrome-ish colour that you could use.
Tried citric acid? Removes old paint too 👍
Thanks for this.
Don't use WD40 for rust prevention. WD40 "displaces" water by absorbing it. In case of using it for rust prevention it will absorb moisture from air and rust the part.
Great, thanks.
old video, poor audio, no subtitles. otherwise useful.
I’ll be sure to grab my Time Machine and go back to fix those issues.
