CORRECTION: We stated that 70% of Americans can’t digest milk. This is not accurate. Instead, the U.S. National Library of Medicine estimates that 65% of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy. medlineplus.gov/genetics/condition/lactose-intolerance.

also worth noting that, while the original stat isn't far off for the population of the world at large, the actual percentage of *Americans* with lactose intolerance is closer to *15%*. So the original stat was pretty flipped from the reality. would've been further worth noting that those without European ancestry are far more likely to be lactose intolerant (and since the US population has mostly, though certainly not exclusively, European ancestry, that's why lactose intolerance prevalence is relatively low in the US compared to the world).

The part about phytoestrogen is a little misleading. Normal milk has plenty of mammal estrogen that can have more of a hormonal effect on humans than anything you'll find in plant milk. I remember going to a Sunday BBQ at a friend house and the vegan was complaining to the host that there’s not enough vegan food available for him. There’s also a time when we travel as a small group and one member of the group refused to consumer anything they deemed strange and dislike: any form of pasta, all dairies product, glutens like bread, Italian dishes like risotto, cured meat. Basically, all that person wanted was rice. You really think it's about consumer confusion? We've used the word milk to describe light creamy liquid for centuries. The adjective before the word is doing enough to describe it. Meanwhile there's half n half blends of plant+dairy milk that just features pictures of the plant with no regulations to protect allergic or vegan consumers from the dairy industry trying to capitalize on 'plant based' trendiness.

@ it's actually due to America's tendency for companies to use marketing to create associations with other products even if the other product has nothing in common, or for American companies to often skimp out on materials/ingredients for a cheaper product to make for a greater profit. Hershey's for example cannot be sold as "chocolate" because it doesn't have the required amount of coco powder to qualify as such, it's sold as chocolate flavoured candy.

There is a little plastic divider that marks the “plant based” section (those are the words on the sign) at one end of the case, but the Beyond Burgers sit just a few inches away from the ground beef. I have been in other stores where all the Gardein and Impossible and Beyond Meat etc etc is relegated to the “organic” section and not with the regular meat but it’s not always that way. It’s in the stores’ own interest to put popular products where shoppers can find them, so as meatless substitutes become more popular they will be more visible, which should help with popularity.

Some discounters, at least in Germany, have pretty decent prices. 1,20 Euro per litre is not bad if you were buying organic milk before. Although organic milk with the highest standards is cheaper, at around an Euro. Fat-reduced milk, however, costs around 65 cent per litre in discounters. So the price is "only" two times higher than that of the cheapest real milk. Probably an enoumous proift margin in plant-based milk compared to cowmilk.

I alternate between unsweetened cashew milk and dairy whole milk. I am one of those who is lucky not to be allergic to dairy, and I enjoy the taste of dairy milk a lot. Plus whole milk with added vitamin D helps me fill in the nutrient categories that I eat less of. Although I gotta say while I like both, whole milk and cashew milk are VERY different nutritionally and by taste so there are many things where I would use only one or the other for, but also many things where they could be used interchangeably. I think it's good that we have both available. Let's face that the biggest problem with farm industries was that they became so industrialized. A lot of effects of animal foods and products can be circumvented if the farms are mindful of what they are doing and the demand is not so heavy as it has been. These vegan alternatives are a great way to give people more choice and remove the strain on the food system and emphasize a way that removes such need for animal products. So while I like meat and dairy, I try to vote with my money by buying & trying new vegan foods, and also by getting my meat and dairy and eggs from farms that put money into improving the conditions with which they treat their human workers, the animals and work on reducing their strain on environment. It just makes sense to have nutritionally similar things or things with similar uses in the same food isles. I wish meat and fish alternatives became cheaper and more accessible and easily found in the meat/fish isles. It would have been so much better if the choice between meat and vegan alternatives was as easy as it is with milk and milk alternatives. Sadly at the moment vegan alternatives are not only hard to find but SUPER expensive where I live. The specialty isles are tiny if they even exist, the products are often not fresh (and sometimes expired), and the prices are basically asking for an arm and a leg. It is definitely a privilege to even be able to buy such products. I can't imagine even half the people living in my neighborhood being able to afford such things on a regular or at all. That is just the sad reality at the moment.

I could get away with it sometimes. But if I refused a huge glass of milk with EVERY dinner - even though I HATED it - you bet I was sitting there till I finished it. All for “strong bones” which is not even true. Just a marketing ploy
