I’m going to get my license. I bought this exact item, just to encourage myself. Ham operators, friends, say I got a great item. I’m a woman, my brother passed away, so every year, I get into one of his interests, for healing purposes. Shortwave was super awesome, to commemorate my brother with. I love shortwave. I can tell this here was a great purchase, as well as an important skill/license to get. Nice review. Thank you. Oh, I got both antenna.
I pretty much did the same thing. Tread carefully, the hobby is extremely addictive. I went from being satisfied with a walkie talkie with a 30 mile line of sight range to outfitting my car for intercontinental DX (long distance). Just going on a trip to 7 eleven, I pickup hams from all over the states and have contacted Europe, Asia and Australia. Have fun!
Thank you. I got one and find much easier to program with Chirp. Was on the road over Christmas through AR and MO and sometimes would hang up on 3 or 4 channels near each other sounded like a thunder storm, like electrical broad band noise. Sometimes in VHF sometimes in UHF. Certain locations near certain cities like Springfield, MO and Bentonville, AR noise was very bad. Thought might be the radio then turned on my scanners and they were also picking up the noise. Many other police, fire and EMS frequencies are now digital audio so sounds a lot like data and my new BC scanner isn't here yet. :-( I hope that will be able to listen to digital audio and trunking. Got stage 4 cancer and taking my last round of chemo tomorrow so I'll be sick for a week or more. Good to get back into ham radio though and listening to frequencies. Gives me something to do.
Just received mine from Amazon today. The 1.25m and 2m antennas were included. Had to use the specific btech UV5x3 option in chirp but other than that, it's just a uv5r with an extra band and only 5w. Definitely prefer this vs the uv5r because of the extra band.
I have to really thank you for this video. I am a newly licensed Ham and have a couple of handhelds, a Yaesu FT-270 (VHF only) and Baofeng UV-82HP. For the life of me I could not figure out programming on the Baofeng and their manual was just about useless to a newbie like me. My FT-270 auto scanned for repeaters and automatically set the offset, you only had to set the tone but on the particular repeater I was programming needed no tone. Anyway I followed this video and this worked perfectly and I programmed in the repeater. However when testing it wasn't working still and then you ran into the same thing, had to be in VFO mode vs. channel mode and then it all worked. Much appreciated! KN4JLT. Thanks!
Programming the Baofeng from the radio itself is very counter-intuitive and I would only seriously consider it in a pinch. If you want to keep your sanity, get a programming cable, hook it up to a PC and use the free CHIRP software to program all the repeaters, FRS, GMRS, even marine VHF channels you want. Keep in mind that you can listen all you want, but even as a licensed amateur with tech privileges, you can’t transmit outside of the amateur bands because the FRS and GMRS services legally require radios certified for use on those frequencies. I have no knowledge of marine VHF so I can’t comment on that. In practice, however, I’m sure that amateurs and non-amateurs alike have used these radios on FRS frequencies as long as the appropriate power limits aren’t exceeded, you use the correct wide/narrow mode and channel spacing. GMRS actually requires a $10 license that’s good for 10 years. The UV-5R actually has a very wide transmit range that even covers frequencies used for EMS, public service, police, and business, and this is why the FCC wants to ban them.
I have a question... I have a USB cable with the two jack connector but from a radio oddity do you know if it will work with these radios? Or does every radio require a separate cable any idea ? Thanks
I bought a UV-82HP and several accessories a while back from BaofengTech and it was a great experience. Very happy with my transaction with them. They also do a great job with their instruction manuals as well. As far as the UV-5X3, I don't own one, at least currently, but they are supposed to come with two antennas. If you contact them at BaofengTech about the missing antenna, I believe they will most likely take care of it for you, if you are interested in pursuing it.
My recently purchased UV-5X3 DID come with two antennas. I've only bought one Nagoya NA-771, so maybe I just got a bad one, but my single example don't work for crap! BUT.... It was inexpensive and I'm thinking of trying at least one more example before shooting off my "cake hole" about them. On the flip side, being a Licensed Operator for over 30 years, I've bought a few Diamond antennas, and these all work just fine! "73" from KB7SWF From the great Northwest!
Yes they all come with two antennas, 2m/70cm, and the 220 antenna. The Nagoya 320A is a great antenna, and they also have a TB-320A mobile antenna. I plan to pick up an Anytone 3318 triband antenna for further testing myself with my 5X3. Also worth mentioning is this 5X3 also includes a new board and new IF filtering allowing for better signal and audio reports in and out.
I just bought this based off your review. I am new to HAM but I figured for $53 with the Nagoya NA-320A tri-band antenna and PC03 FTDI program cable through amazon after applying for there visa card I figured why not.
I've found them pretty good for local, around town use, though not quite the receive sensitivity as "the names." If you're into hilltopping using a half way, portable beam or the like, the name brands still give you far greater receive capabilities. BTW, I did get the 220 antenna with mine, and it seems to work as well as the Nagoya though changing back to the 2m, 440 every time can be a pain, particularly since that antenna will not work on 220.
I've asked this before but I'll ask again because I'd really like to know, is the Btech UV-5X3 and the Baofeng UV-5RX3 the same radio? I've seen RUclips reviews of them both. There is also the Baofeng UV-5R III tri-band radio. All the same? All different? Inquiring minds want to know.
You should have removed the plastic from the screen. The glare on the plastic strip made viewing the screen difficult. My UV-5X3 was delivered with two antennas.. I replaced both with a Nagoya NA-320A
This video is 4-years old. I've made many changes since then. But yes, the Nagoya 320a is the antenna I now use, and have used for a while, on this radio.
The bummer about the UV-5R (and variants, BF-F8HP and UV-5X3 is they are not FCC Part 90 licensed and compliant. Which I understand to mean that even then they are capable of transmiting on GMRS freqs, the user is not authorized to do it even if the use is licensed by the FCC. What does your experience tell you?
You're talking about 3 different things, so let me clarify. Some Baofeng radios are indeed Part 90 compliant. I've honestly never owned a UV5R, but they were made for Part 97, not Part 90, in my experience. The UV-5X3 cannot be Part 90 compliant because it carries the 220 band. So it is Part 97 only. GMRS requires Part 95. So no radios that are only Part 90 or only Part 97 compliant are technically "legal" to use on GMRS. There are radios, like Motorolas, which carry more than 1 certification, so you have to be sure which brand and model you are using, and what you are wanting to use it for.
Thanks for the vid. Just bought this radio and am studying for the Technician licence. I'm located in central Arlington near Fielder Rd. Any advice or info on local clubs / education would be appreciated. Dale
Though 220 isn’t used here in the U.K., I have a couple of different tri-band Baofeng HTs, and pretty good they are too. It’s just a shame the power outputs don’t meet the advertised claims
Great videos always! I bought the UV-5x3 last week. Very familiar with chirp cause I program my UV-5r. For some reason the 5x3 won’t let me change “settings” in chirp but no problem with UV-5r. Also the scan doesn’t scan well. It from BTech. Any ideas?
What's wrong with your scan ? Does it seem slow? I have a USB cable with the two jack connector but from a radio oddity do you know if it will work with these radios? Or does every radio require a separate cable
Ham Radio 2.0 I have 3 of these HT radios and really like them, the only down side is they don't put out 5 Watts as the ad claims, I have a friend that has 4 repeaters 2 VHF, 1 440, and 1 220, all are anywhere from 49 to 51 miles from me, I live in the mountain region of Eastern Washington State and I live in a Valley area between me and my friends repeater there are tall hills and mountains, I can only hit his 220 repeater, and on 220 my radio only puts out 3.38 Watts on hi power, and that repeater is 51 miles from me, I got good reports on my transmit and receive was pretty good, and we talk for an hour.
I just bought this radio, along with the BTech programming cable and I can't get CHIRP to communicate with the radio. You'd think after 4 years there'd be no issues... I got this as a starter rig. Began the course many moons ago (when you had to learn MC) and recently decided to get licensed. I actually work in Television at the moment.
Back when I sold radios I would get customers who claimed that their radio wasn't able to be read by their computer. 98% of the time, the issue was their computer, not the radio. Of course, it is possible it is the radio, but....more than likely it is your computer. I've read my UV-5X3 on my computer many times with no issues.
I had the same issue at first and decided to purchase a new cable so now I have two good cables... The problem was that I was being too careful and didn't want to force the plug. Push the plug in harder than you think necessary. It snuggles right up against the radio when it's in all the way, then magically (or technically), it works.
The first Baofeng I got was the UV-82. I got a lot of the UV-5Rs and was not all that impressed. The BF-F9 is a good radio. I liked the UV-82 because of the dual PTT. When I broke it, I finally got the UV-82 HP and got some good audio reports on it. I would like to see a UV-82 triband. I plan to get a UV-5X3 to check it out. Thanks for the review. KG7YDJ
Radioddity has a program cable for $8. Just used it this week and it worked great. If using CHIRP be sure to choose Radioddity as the manufacturer- its the only way to get to the uv 5rx3 firmware to program 220 band frequencies.

Actually both of those are wrong. I met the Baofeng folks at IWCE in 2015, and when I tried to pronounce it correctly, they laughed at me. (All in good fun). Apparently I am not capable of correct pronunciation, so I just call it Bay-oh-feng.

Actually both of those are wrong. I met the Baofeng folks at IWCE in 2015, and when I tried to pronounce it correctly, they laughed at me. (All in good fun). Apparently I am not capable of correct pronunciation, so I just call it Bay-oh-feng.
