In the short story, "The Red Roller" on which this ep is based, the human protagonist concludes that the utterly alien Roller -- though clumsy and somewhat slow -- will leverage its much greater mass, toughness, and endurance to eventually defeat him. For one thing, the (contrived) environment is very hot and dry and he's tiring fast and almost sun-blind as a result, whereas the Roller seems better-adapted to those conditions. The human feels himself a "dead man walking" -- until he hits upon the game-changer the planet offers. Remember, the Gorn have interstellar capability, so they at least held their own in fights against somebody. Advantage Gorn here.

He couldn't just escape because the aliens were forcing them to fight. If he tried to run, the Gorn would just keep following him until he eventually ran out of energy. Or the aliens might force their paths to cross. I'm not sure just how much they could manipulate. Not to mention the Gorn doesn't know where he is and has to spend time looking for him.

Mythbusters forget one thing, it is an alien world with alien bamboo. Also if you look closely you can see that the bamboo cannon did not survive the blast.

I agree, for all of the same reasons as you, its a great episode. The fact that he refused to kill the Gorn in defiance of a higher power and at great risk to his and his shipmates lives says a lot as well. Chasing down the Gorn ship to destroy it out of vengeance was his fall, risking his life so selflessly to show mercy on the Gorn was his redemption.

It's what makes this episode so good, it teaches us the power of forgiveness, mercy, and compassion. Brains vs. Brawn!

@@DarvatronAt the 2nd New York, Star Trek Convention, there was a Dealer, selling a pin-on badge, that said: "Happiness, is a Warm Gorn !" They sold out FAST !
Someone also made, a stick-on, that read, "NBC, is A Klingon CONSPIRACY !"

AMAZING! JTK "finds" some rope next to the bamboo by the fire road (what planet are they on?) ... finds the "crude" elements... and builds a frickin' bazooka that shoots diamonds/crystals at the dreaded "gorn". By wounding the "gorn" but not killing him off- JTK ONCE AGAIN proves that HE is the smartest/best human ever. I have seen ALL of these episodes... and I assure you that had the "gorn " been a female... JTK would have been searching for rubber trees to make a different type of protection.

He might have died of starvation waiting for the Gorn to die using that strategy. He hit him in the chest with a huge rock, then dropped a boulder off of a cliff onto him as well. The boulder only stunned the Gorn for a moment or two.
Watch part two and see for yourself.

Haha, that's an awesome analogy! Captain Kirk's fighting style always amused me, especially the two-handed karate chops to the upper back, haha!
The best from Star Trek is this scene where Spock grabs a guy by the wrist and pushes him to the ground like a sissy-girl for the KO victory. It looks REALLY bad, I should go dig it up.
