I used to like Star Wars a lot but when I decided to give the Original Series a chance because of the Kelvin Timeline, I immediately became a Trekkie. I wouldn't say a complete Trekkie since I haven't seen the Next Generation or the other spin offs since it is hard to connect with new characters when I love the original characters so much. Plus, the trio of Kirk, Spock and Bones is one of the best friendships I have seen.
Well, McCoy was a good friend of Kirk's, and not a line officer, and he most certainly wasn't afraid to say what was on his mind; all this made him a great balance for Kirk. Hell, somebody had to tell him the truth now and then...
Doctor McCoy was a Star Fleet Academy graduate and a Star Fleet Officer with combat experience and commendations, and prepared in the chain of command, so how was he not a line Officer ?
Andrew Chapman The broadcast order was near idiocy in that first season. Star Trek's debut was arguably one of its worst episodes, especially when "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was essentially written as character intro, and makes no sense at all airing after Corbomite, or Man Trap.... I seem to recall Tremors: the Series doing the same thing. Wasn't a great series by any means, but we get introduced to Christopher Lloyd's character three episodes after we first see him in broadcast order. And then there's Firefly..... Y'know,... I think networks do that when they are intentionally trying to sabotage a show
K1productions Hmm maybe, or maybe they broadcast episodes in such an order to establish the show and characters. Actually, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was indeed broadcast after "The Man Trap" but before "The Corbomite Maneuver".
Andrew Chapman The Man Trap barely establishes the characters. It was little more than a "monster of the week" episode, and that is why the network chose it.
Notice folks, that from the very beginning, the Captain here again shows his deep love and concern for his ship he commands. It's prevalent throughout all three seasons of the Original Star Trek series, his command, his crew and his career takes number one priority over anything else out there.
I know this is not the first episode aired but it is the first shot. It’s actually my absolute favorite episode of TOS. Everyone in it is just so energized. (No pun intended 😉) and fresh. Kirk displays the brilliant, out of the box thinking that makes him the greatest Star Ship Captain ever, Uhura, without much seeming effort makes her formidable presence known (love her SO much) Spock has such a wonderful couple of moments that show both his competence as a first officer and his tender vulnerability. But for my money he best of all is Bones!! McCoy is a revaluation. He’s smart, funny, authoritative, caring and, well sexy! It’s so much fun to watch.
Actually the first episode shot (with Kirk and Spock) was "Where No Man Has Gone Before." Thus the different doctor, different uniform shirts (turtle necks), and other cast members not yet on the show , like Uhura, It was the third episode shown in the first season.
I recently read a really strong argument explaining how Kirk may be an empath, although he isn't aware of it, because of how well he can influence people's emotions in his favor to win when his back is up against the wall.
Headquarters assigning Kirk a female yeoman Was a strategic move. I Imagine a Male yeoman could not get Kirk to stop and eat, sign his paperwork on time, or change out of a ripped shirt after away missions. The yeoman of a Starship Is the engineer that keeps the most vital component of the starship functioning, the captain.
"What are you going to do with that 6 percent when they give it to you, Jim?" "I am going to take it and i'm going to...." I can't blame Kirk for going for the extra 6. lol
You must have missed a few episodes in Season 2. He's shown without his shirt and he looks just fine (e.g., "The Deadly Years"). I thought so when I was an 11 y.o. girl and think so now at 66.
It’s tough when you are having trouble at home AND in almost every scene at work...he once said when being interviewed at his gym that sitting around the set makes you flabby
@@GoGreen1977 Justman said Shatner and other cast complained about the uniforms shrinking as they were laundered every shooting day. Apparently they weren't visa-polyester but a theatrical wool blend that photographed well. You can tell when they tossed uniforms and started on a new batch. Desilu was a cheap, second tier studio renting abandoned 1930s soundstages at Paramount and streets on the Culver 40 between filming of MI, Mannix, Andy Griffith and I Dream of Jeannie. .
Some viewers would claim McCoy should have warned Kirk about the flashing alert light. They're missing the point. McCoy knew Spock was on the Bridge and had enough faith in him to handle the situation without disturbing the captain.
So, natural the exchange was between Kirk and McCoy, as if they were long time friends. Love the chemistry and camaraderie in this show, made it most interesting, coupled with very good writing and episodes. My favorite of all the Treks w/o question and not duplicated by any of the others.
In this Corbomite Episode I couldn't take too much more of Dr. McCoys Annoyance to Capt. Kirk. If it where me I would have told him " Your DISMISSED Dr."
Star Trek was good as it showed different OFficer positions it inspired and put Americans TO WORK. Doctors, dispatchers, scientists, military, engineers, actors....
This show was a master class in how not to run a starship LOL. The medical officer hanging out on the bridge, second-guessing and arguing with the captain. The Captain and the exec and three poor red-shirts leaving the ship all the time to go ashore and investigate some un-known planet. Every episode has something that would be its own chapter in How Not To Run A Starship.
McCoy was wrong to ignore the red alert. He has no idea why it was on, obviously a red alert is pretty damn important! He should have told Kirk right off the bat while stopping the exercise at the same time so Kirk could attend the the emergency right way, the whole reason for a red alert! McCoy should have gotten some sort of punishment or at least a really good reprimand for that.
The good Doctor knew, his philosophy is that a little suffering is good for the soul. The Captain always turned to snd had a close friendship relationship with the Doctor, and could open up about anything to him, and McCoy would understand and always give sound medicial advice that the Captain would accept and understand. You see, the show was designed and geared towards a young Captain, his first command of a starship, the Enterprise, a logicial non emotional first officer and a Doctor who helps determine this young Captain make the right calls and judgements in his command. And as stated before, the Captain can open up at anytime to the good Doctor, and the good Doctor was always there most of the time to support the Captain's judgements.
Denny Crane looking good;) I thought I saw every episode... I have to see this episode; doesn't she become a doctor in the movies??? Definitely McCoy's check-mate here...
Nurse Chapel becomes a doctor in the movies, not Yeoman Rand. Rand was last seen with the original series crew as the communications officer aboard the USS Excelsior, under the command of Captain Sulu.
A woman serving food. Classical in those those years and scolding like a mom, or the typical "sexy" music when a beautiful woman, not from the crew, appeared.
in this episode, captain kirk says, "i've already got a female to worry about. her name is the enterprise." my question is this. what would the offspring of captain kirk and the enterprise look like?
94% eh??? That Yeoman was always giving 110% he kept Kirk in VERY good shape---all men should have a girl like her to keep their libido in great shape.
Bones was actually asking kirk if he wanted to hit that i would if i was kirk. too bad they had to let her go so kirk could be available for alien strange
I always loved the friendship of Kirk and McCoy. I loved how he could listen to the captain and give him great heart felt advice.
"If I jumped every time a light flashed around here, I'd end up talking to myself.. " (muttering to himself) :D what a lovely guy!
One of my favorite lines! Haha!
Doc muttered to himself again at the base of El Capitan while camping.
These star Treks were the best! No matter how many times I watch them I never get tired of them!
What I love about Kirk is while he is friendly with his officers and personable with his crew there is absolutely no doubt who is in command.
I'm a Trekkie until the day I die. Every time I watch an episode it's like the first time.
Very Interesting
Same though! 😂😂💖💖 Trekkie! 🖖
Treker. Love the Original Star Trek series as well to. The Original Star Trek series will ALWAYS RULE MAN! No exception, period.

He was kirks conscience and heart. Just like Spock was his brain and logic
Doctor McCoy was a Star Fleet Academy graduate and a Star Fleet Officer with combat experience and commendations, and prepared in the chain of command, so how was he not a line Officer ?
Even McCoy looks young in this episode.....glad to see the old gang at it again!
I love how the crew is so blase about Kirk roaming the corridors sweaty and shirtless.
What we don't see is the female crew members drooling!
They used to it
Kirk is totally Empathic. That's why he's such a good Captain. And that's why he can understand and appreciate Spock. And also Bones.
"Bring some for the doctor too!""No, no! No. I never eat until the crew eats." lol
I like watching McCoy because he was the only one that would yell back at Kirk without being afraid of being court marshalled
If you watch the TOS episodes in production order instead of broadcast order, then this is McCoy's debut episode along with Uhura and Rand.
Andrew Chapman The broadcast order was near idiocy in that first season. Star Trek's debut was arguably one of its worst episodes, especially when "Where No Man Has Gone Before" was essentially written as character intro, and makes no sense at all airing after Corbomite, or Man Trap....

K1productions True. Well anyway, I'd rather watch the episodes in production order than broadcast order any day.

Me too. Both pilot episodes were tremendous, for different reasons. And both were Star Trek at its best.
Notice folks, that from the very beginning, the Captain here again shows his deep love and concern for his ship he commands. It's prevalent throughout all three seasons of the Original Star Trek series, his command, his crew and his career takes number one priority over anything else out there.
Yet in "The Search for Spock" he sacrificed the Enterprise to give his shipmates a fighting chance for life.
@@WillCamx , yes, and then asked McCoy, "What have I done?"
I agree, but I can't believe Kirk, Spock and McCoy wouldn't see the danger in a silent red alert!
i could watch McCoy own Kirk all day... McCoy is my hero... :D
Damn it, Jim!

They got creative in this episode using some special camera angles on the bridge.
These two put up with so much shit from each other. Must be love!

God I love this show!!!
Much better than the “enhanced” FX. Original model shots capture the feel of the series better
My brother and I used to call this the "rotating marshmallow" episode... TOS was the best!
"What are you going to do with that 6 percent when they give it to you, Jim?" "I am going to take it and i'm going to...." I can't blame Kirk for going for the extra 6. lol
I've always wondered what he was going to do with it.
Their voices sound adorable ever-so-slightly sped up.
I watch most videos at 1.5x :)
Looking at Shatner in Season 2, I'd say Bones really should have stuck to his guns about Kirk's diet...
PumpkinDave I sadly agree, though he trimmed down for the movies
