The first console romance game has the weird distinction of having you date a real person...
The Year of FDS is a catalog of the Famicom Disk System, Nintendo's expansion to their Family Computer.

That’s the most condensed explanation of the whole Famicom Tantei Club + Itoi Shigesato lineage I have ever seen haha. I think you could have elaborated a little more on Sakamoto Yoshio’s and Itoi Shigesato’s involvement! Although I guess you could (did?) save that for the Famicom Tantei Club video.

Very likely the case. It's more relevant to that game and there's probably a lot to say since Famicom Tantei Club is a series that got resurrected and has a new game coming on August 29.

Congrats on getting halfway through the FDS library! This is such an interesting game for the system, so unique. It even has that whole real-world interaction going on with those (now no longer working) phone call messages, something they would try over here in the US with Roger Rabbit on the NES. I have a feeling that I would have been hyped to try this game if I saw it as a kid, but I definitely would not be allowed to use the phone along with it, so I'd be missing out on a major aspect.

I heard nobody bothered to save a recording of the Roger Rabbit phone calls, either! Now I know you can find recordings of the Treasure Island Dizzy helpline and at least one instance of that silly Alfred Chicken campaign, so apparently they care about preserving this stuff somewhat in the UK.

Was looking forward to this episode, one of my favorite FDS games.
Not too interested in dating sim games but I love the soundtrack, the art and that it's an adventure game not about a murder case.

I spent a fair bit of time with Uematsu's pre-Final Fantasy soundtracks a few years back during research for a book chapter, and the soundtrack to this game was a particularly interesting listen. There are a lot more parallels to his work on the 8-bit Final Fantasy entries than there were in most of his pre-FF soundtracks (e.g., the end credits music to this game sounding similar to the FF1 overworld theme, and some of the shorter tracks in conversations sounding similar to cutscene music from FF3), and had the sense that this was also the first time that he used music as a vehicle for storytelling in any significant way (most of the earlier titles weren't really conducive to that approach).
Congrats on reaching halfway-love your work!

Is it just me, or does the cover picture have a totally wrong vibe? It doesn't feel romantic so much as "the call is coming from inside the house!"

Halfway through the project and it feels like we've seen what FDS already has to offer. I really hope we see some diamonds in the rough for the latter half. Nintendo still has those murder mystery games coming up and such.

Yeah, the Famicom Detective Club games were remade for the Switch. Those remakes are really good for Japanese learners, because of furigana and full voice acting. Anyhow, I think that the first half of FDS's library is better. More hidden gems and classics everyone knows. 1988 onward has fewer of those in my opinion, and 1989 pretty much marks the system's death.

Love the ones with an interesting backstory! reminds me of the likes of 'teddy boy blues' over at sega they also had an idol pop star tie-in, iirc. and congratulations on the half-way mark I can't believe it's been going this long.

I remember this one, because it had a higher score than Rockman/Mega Man 1 and Metal Gear in Famitsu (but lower than Final Fantasy 1). It's certainly a game that did well at the time, but let's face it - this wasn't the best holiday season for FDS.The genre it inspired is also not much of a thing in the West comparatively (I'd argue Metroid/Zelda are 'far' more important in the West, obviously). Still, it's certainly interesting for what it is, even if it's far more important for the Japanese market. Congrats on reaching the halfway point!

My fingers are crossed for something PC-Engine related. That console fits into that "big in Japan, not so much elsewhere" that could make for a really interesting dive given RndStranger's focus and approach.

I have a plan for the next big project and I've been gathering materials for it but I'm holding off on any announcement until I get closer.
Naturally, it will be focused on a Japanese platform, but because there's no functional difference between that and the international versions, my scope is going to open up a bit.

@@RndStranger Honestly, by the time you are done with the FDS and having already done the Japanese Famicom library which covered a lot of releases that came out internationally, you might as well look into covering the chunk of European and American exclusive NES releases and finish off the whole platform.
