Everyone's first oil change is messy. Don't worry about it. Next time find a huge piece of cardboard and place it under the car that way you get oil on the cardboard and not on the ground. Also, please please please don't trust just the plastic car ramps. Get a set of jack stands and double up for your safety. The last thing you want is a 3000+ lb car coming down on you and squishing you to death. I myself have triple protection... car ramps, jack stands, and a jack on the side of the car I'm working on. Lastly, get some latex gloves and some cheap microfiber towels to use ONLY for oil changes.
thanks for the tip. especially since next time, I'll be much more prepared. and it will get more efficient every time I do it. I appreciate the kind words. also, the "depression" in me says nah. it's all good. I have life insurance and i'm worth more dead than alive.
yup. that's what they told me at the dealer. I've done two so far, and i'm at 8100 miles. I did my 2nd one recently. ruclips.net/video/Pp7FkaRa4cI/видео.html
Thanks for the comment. Sorry I didn't see it sooner. Based on driving a 74 horsepower car with a CVT for 10 years, it's so nice to have 201 HP and a manual transmission.
Hey man, did you go and buy the filter at the dealership or somewhere else? I would do mine by myself but got none of the equipment right now. Can I buy the filter and just take it to like TAKE 5 or something like that. Because I’ve heard the dealership takes a long time
I went to the dealership and bought it. They asked my year make and model, plus engine size, to confirm they sold me the right one. Yes you can buy it and have anyone else install it.
I love working on my car, but the one thing I won't do is change my own oil. It's very simple with the proper tools, but it's just way too messy. Also good on you for having a manual transmission, we're a dying breed of enthusiasts!
Use a fluid extractor. You just pull the oil from the dipstick tube. The only thing underneath on these things is the oil filter. Much cleaner. It drains more old oil from the pan. No need to buy new washers for the plug.
@Ichibuns I have bad back, so getting under there is an issue onto itself. But I just bring my own oil and filter to the mechanic and get charged $20ish
Quick question, did the oil change light come on? Is there a way to check the percentage of oil life in the cluster because I can’t seem to find it anywhere besides resetting the service but nowhere does it say the percentage I’m actually at .
just bought a 24 forte gt with the manual. was the only one in the blue within 150 miles of me i could find, drove like an hour and a half. love it so far but then again, its been a day haha :) seems like a fun car... pretty sure manual transmissions wont exist in a year or two, and honda civic si's were going for damn near 40k. wasnt about to buy a honda for 40k, regardless of how much i love and believe in them. got some cool liners coming, liners for the door, cupholders, center console organizers, aftermarket all year floor mats, the stuff i want to keep it in good shape.
@@dubb7530 I wanted an si so bad. But I only found one in six months. Was white (the ONLY color I didn't want) and a six thousand markup. It's disgusting.
I've never ever ever added oil to my filter.....never seen anyone do it until this video.....yes you oil the gasket on filter so it makes for easier removal in future....but filling the filter itself with oil....never seen such a practice 😅
On smaller engines like this one it's no big deal, where you have to do it is bigger trucks and diesels (oil filter holds 1 full qt) only to prevent longer "dry starts"
as a mechanic of more then 20 years, its very common. especially in big trucks where the filter will hold over a quart. some nearly a gallon. it does not hurt anything to put oil in the filter. just takes less time for lubricant to spread.
Sorry. It's done through the infotainment system. I didn't know until someone commented how to do it. You'll find maintenance in the settings for the infotainment unit.
Not one thing this guy does is procedurally correct ! And what a mess ! This is not a good video or proper instruction ! Beware ! I think the video speaks loudly of what not to do !
I would agree with you and I also never stated that it was a tutorial video. in the end the oil is brand new and so is the filter and nothing bad happened.
That's a nice little ride you got there Josh, you got it at a good time too, before prices got stoopid. Also why are you suffering away changing your own oil on a brand new car?? Most stealerships throw in complimentary oil changes the first 3-6 months on a new car. Or you could've gone to Valvoline & had them do it in 30 minutes. while I get the fun factor I'm not sure the "savings" are worth the trouble these days. Also interesting that your 2023 car takes 5w30, I thought most modern engines use 0w oils.
Trust me, I know. Even my 2014 Mitsubishi mirage had 0w20. But whatever. I know from changing oil in a shop, we ran out of 0w20 multiple times. So it’s kinda cool that it’s not the most common oil in earth right now. For me it’s not about saving money. It’s about feeling accomplished and knowing what’s been done. My car came with a 10 percent off coupon for the first oil change.
@@wwjoshdew gotcha, you’re brave, I would baby a new car too much to take things into my own hands, but then again I hear you on “knowing what’s been done” because not every mechanic takes pride in their work and once your car goes behind the “veil” there’s no telling what goes on back there.
@@ChrisBanda this might sound weird. I can’t word it much better than what I’m about too… but as I was carrying my used oil to properly dispose of it, I kept thinking “I’m carrying my cars soul” or blood or whatever. lol
Get a good set of wrenches youre going to end up stripping that plug trying to take it off with a socket all the time yes i understand you got it done but in the long run its gonna cost you also get a floor jack and some jack stands that way you can lower the car that dirty oil mixing is no good also the service interval is under the settings menu under convenience if you dont reset it it will eventually let you know
Good job on the oil change. Mine also makes a clicking sound after turning it off , my assumption is it could be the smart computers for navigation maybe . Other times the fan stays on after turning it off for a short period
I recently got a Kia Forte GT and just passed 10k miles (I know you're supposed to do like 12k miles or whatever it says in the manual but being a little early never hurts anything am I right?) I was only really looking for the key locations and if there was a washer since I do already maintain other vehicles. I must say this video is hilarious! All the little mistakes and your humor is amusing. I'll have to agree that the GT is just an outstanding car to daily drive. There are better cars, but not for this price. Cheers to your first oil change, and to many more!
yeah, turbos like fresh clean oil. I'm at 9800 miles now and gonna do my 3rd oil change soon. 70 bucks for 15 quarts of very high quality oil aint bad.
Everything one definitely shouldn’t do, you did it. If the front is elevated on ramps not all oil will be drained from the sump so effectively you’re mixing old oil with new. The plug should be removed before the filter that way you won’t get a deluge of oil when removing the filter. Why didn’t you use the funnel to fill the filter? A few more oil changes and your garage will be swimming in oil.
Working with very limited resources, space, tools, and experience. Thanks for roasting me. At least 95 percent new oil is better than zero percent new oil. And I didn’t consider the funnel thing for the filter. I will next time though. And I will get another set of ramps, so the car is level.
@@wwjoshdew sorry if I came across a bit blunt - just trying to be economical with words. 😀 A few more tips lol: wear disposable gloves as engine oil is detrimental to the skin. The oil ways in an engine are not similar to a hot water bottle ie you pour oil in at the top and it drops straight down into the sump. So wait a couple of minutes when topping up for all that your pour in to reach the sump.
@@travellingman9031 if you wanna get technical, you’ll never remove 100 percent of the oil unless you remove the engine from your car, tear it down, put each part in a parts cleaner, rebuild it, and put it back in. Who’s gonna do that every oil change? Lol.
changing it at 7k miles or even 5k miles isnt wasting money. people who think you can go 12k miles cuz you bought amsoil have obviously never had their oil tested and seen the results.
I did my second oil change recently!

Why on Earth would you pull the filter before draining the oil? And why the hell would you install the new filter before draining?
Just the way I’ve done it for a long time.
I know right?
@@wwjoshdew don't.
