Dr. Alan Goldhamer is the co-founder of TrueNorth Health Center, a state-of-the-art facility that provides medical and chiropractic services, psychotherapy and counseling, as well as massage and bodywork. He is also director of the Center's groundbreaking residential health education program.
Articulate, inspiring and energetic, Dr. Goldhamer is one of the most pioneering and dedicated visionaries in health today. An outspoken professional who doesn't shy away from a spirited debate, he is deeply committed to helping people stuck in self-destructive cycles reclaim their ability to change their lives.
Dr. Goldhamer has supervised the fasts of thousands of patients. Under his guidance, the Center has become one of the premier training facilities for doctors wishing to gain certification in the supervision of therapeutic fasting.
Dr. Goldhamer was the principal investigator in two landmark studies. The first: "Medically Supervised Water-Only Fasting in the Treatment of Hypertension" appeared in the June 2001 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. Its publication marked a turning point in the evolution of evidence supporting the benefits of water-only fasting. The second study: "Medically Supervised Water-Only Fasting in the Treatment of Borderline Hypertension," appeared in the October 2002 issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.
Currently, Dr. Goldhamer is directing a team that is developing a prospective study, incorporating random assignment and long-term follow-up on the cost and clinical outcomes in the treatment of diabetes and high blood pressure with fasting and a health-promoting diet.
After completing his chiropractic education at Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon, Dr. Goldhamer traveled to Australia, where he became licensed as an osteopathic physician. He is the author of The Health Promoting Cookbook and co-author of The Pleasure Trap: Mastering The Hidden Force That Undermines Health and Happiness.

I love that idea that Dr. Lisle mentioned about becoming addicted to the feeling of behavioral excellence! I notice that really helps me stay on track and avoid temptation that comes when we go out. Staying home due to COVID has been great because I don't have those temptations.

Very astute of you Celeste to reiterate that gem from Dr Listle. What a great concept, becoming addicted to the feeling of behavioral excellence. I can imagine how that could be such a great cycle of positive reinforcement and happiness.🤘

Thanks for putting this together AJ. I was going to say "Two of my heroes", but actually, all three :). What a blast, really enjoyed this.
As an aside, one of the main points Dr Lisle talks about is environmental mismatch, hence the pleasure trap. I believe that to be true, but at the same time, I would rather live in the time I'm living in, than somewhere in the past. IOW, there's that daily struggle with the pleasure trap, but living in these times is much more interesting.

Thank you very much for having orchestrated this combo-interview with Drs Lisle and Goldhamer. It is one of the very best interviews that I have listened to, bar none. Your questions were really useful in getting them both to talk about a wide-ranging variety of subjects that I don't think could have been achieved without you, Chef AJ, yourself having conducted the interview. Bravo! I plan to relisten to it because I think that it was one of the very best that I have heard of with Dr Lisle. The fact that both men were bouncing off one another brought out a great level of humor and allowed their differences of opinion--nuanced differences--to come out in a very educational way. I got a much better understanding of The Pleasure Trap today than I have in the past even though I have read the book in both ebook and audiobook formats. This interview, IMHO, was solid gold and I will be sharing it with friends who are also doing WFPB and finding their way. It can help them to stay the course or more fully understand why they are not. I take a certain comfort from what both men have to say because of the nature of my own motivation to continue on this path now that I've actually found it so late, at age 66, in life. There is simply nothing that I want to put into my mouth, masticate, swallow, digest, metabolize, and excrete MORE than I want my 83-year-old husband to live another 10-15 years in good health. He himself has no desire to do it. He does it for me. And we live a fairly isolated life so our social pressure challenges are relatively low--when you consider that we live in rural central France where "culinary tradition" (read 'a heart attack inducing way of eating,' over the long-haul) is next to godliness. This video really helped me to add to how I conceptualized "being successful" at it and I'm looking forward to rewatching it and sharing it. Thank you once again for all you do to educate the public, Chef AJ and your guests.

Great work again AJ! Next time you have Dr. Doug Lisle/Dr Alan Goldhamer on could you ask them how some of concepts from the "brain over binge" might apply to other areas of life. I really enjoyed the concept of how traditional therapy for eating disorders specifically binge-eating disorders only perpetuates the eating disorder (i.e. the act of binging) by convincing us that we are not in control, that there are deep psychological issues, that we can't get better without therapy etc. This is new concept to me that I thought was fascinating but I know these Doctors are very well versed in this area! Thanks!!

They are a hoot! Thank you Chef AJ for hosting this dynamic duo/ energetic trio!! I would like to add that I believe that the percentage of people that do really well on the plan, yet could easily fall into the “pleasure trap” are most likely those that go on to educate others!!! They have started a RUclips channel or host cooking parties. Somehow they are continuing to keep the information Current and alive in their pre-frontal cortex until the habit becomes more ingrained and natural. The power of accountability and or mentoring somebody else should be highly encouraged for those that might easily fall into the pleasure trap 👍🏼. More success then 😊

Friends for "over 50 years"??? They don't look that old. Does this mean they grew up together, as children then? I don't know that much about them. They do seem to love each others company, as best friends do. So, just wondering how they met each other, when in their lives did this friendship begin. Love, love, love how they tease each other - they must know each other so, so well.

Chef AJ, Dr. Lisle, Dr. Goldhammer - thank you for these talks, the information, your books et al. You say “people have to learn, people have to...etc.”. I believe in your message! I am very late to the table, getting turned onto the path of health. Throughout this journey from SAD to basically McDougall SS I’ve been to many vegan, WFPB, raw food, Dr. Greger, Dr. McDougall, Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. Hyman, Dr. Barnard. Obviously the info is out there yet there remains great reluctance to adopt this life style. Is it the message or how the message is being delivered...?
