Ahhh …the unforgettable, unmistakeable sound of ‘that’ whining Leyland engine 🥰 When buses were “buses”, I absolutely ❤’d these auld girls when I was a wee lad growing up in my school years 🥰 No bus has ever come close, and never will, to the ‘magnificent’ Bristol RELL ✨
I'd even dare say - the way they were designed to be driven :) Considerate to the gearbox, and reasonably, but not overly, utilizing the fluid flywheel to save unnecessary gear changes. Superb driving, IMHO :)
t you can tell it is an early re the side drivers window and the door has that carve in the top corner like the old MW buses and green inside but still looks quit modern for a mid 6o,s RE bus, brings back memory's when i was little kid about 6 years of age in the 60,s, at the time these early re,s and the mw mack 1,s and mack 2,s where at the time around with the half cabs single Decker,s bus, this was the first re bus i rode on with my mother, and seeing the video make,s like yesterday
Thank You, and yes, I just love the sound of these! These were regular where I lived in the 70s and 80s so I had the pleasure of riding these all the time in normal service.
@@BristolRE Same as in stroud you can take your pick from MK1 MK2 MK3 Layland national and the good old MWs and LS leddadecker VR doubledecker or Daimler double-decker we had 8 different makes of buses in Stroud in the 70s
Brought back lovely memories of 1066 1082 etc when I was a breakdown Mechanic at Wells 74/76. Lovely Tillings green leathercloth & interior paint & that moquette. A real driver's bus & well piloted by the driver here! Shame about the lack of fire extinguisher & glass, hope a replacement can be sourced. I think the interior mirror should have been a little round one as fitted to the outside of MW's. Also, we never used a long arm on a N/s mirror,: looks very vulnerable! The rattles & bangs were far quieter than when they ran on cross ply tyres: the amount of loose rivets & screws rapidly diminished once radial plys were universally adopted.
Leyland engined RE's growl the best with Gardener ones being that bit quieter. The reason why RE's itself growl is due to it's exhaust . It has one silencer and a very long exhaust pipe with a bend in it near the tailpipe. Some Lincoln City Transport Alexander bodied RE's had 2 silencers fitted because they were considered too loud. An RE can never be too loud. You knew when one was coming when you heard it's famous growl.
@@BristolRE Well a museum where i volunteer at has an RE and it's so smokey from cold that they have to open a door. One time they stuck a flexi pipe on the exhaust and it glorified the sound even more.
I remember riding on an RE with the doors open when I was a kid, my sister fell off the side seat and nearly went off the platform, having been a driver I'd advise him to shut the doors, a lot of new buses won't release the handbrake if the doors are open.
Carmel,s back on SONG!!! come on make her BARK and scream!!! like all sell respecting 680- RE,s. Like Reg the Veg at Stroud Bus Running Day,June 2021he made her howl, no wonder driving tellytubby buses for a living at Cotswold Green.
@@grahamemmett I remember many times back in the 70s and 80s where the driver would drive with the doors open during hot weather. Agreed it doesn't happen today in service.
I love the sound of the engine of these buses, takes me back to the 1970 when going to Scarborough from Leeds on holidays ❤
Best sounding buses ever
That idle is spot on

Agree!
Credit to the young bloke driving - no slam-through changes nor is he babying the thing, just giving it a good thorough work-out.
I'd even dare say - the way they were designed to be driven :) Considerate to the gearbox, and reasonably, but not overly, utilizing the fluid flywheel to save unnecessary gear changes. Superb driving, IMHO :)
Thank you. I love driving KHW.
Yes, I own a preserved RE and this gentleman is one of a very few I’d be content to drive mine!
@@southdown278 It shows.
Acoustics miraculously improved after decanting certain passengers from the charabanc @3:45
Indeed. Never sure why people travel on buses at running days if all they are going to do is talk and spoil it for everyone else
Superb driving too. Properly driven but with plenty of gusto. Exactly how I'd drive it :-)
That throaty engine and exhaust complimented with the driveline howl = magic and awesomeness in my opinion.
Definitely!
yes that is the beautiful throaty bark of a gardner engine
@@david197407 I believe this has a Leyland 0.680 engine fitted not a gardner

Happy days, riding RE's, MWs and Lodekka's.
I don't travel on buses often but remember a Gloucester to Bristol journey on a RELL in the 1980s.
They were better days all round
@@BristolRE Much better days
Excellent journey and the engine on these is great and I can see why you like Bristol REs so much.

BristolRE nice.
Which engine is it? Leyland?
The first modern bus

RE mK 1 flat front with a shorter front windscreen and green inside like the old mw,s and both baggage racks on each side of the bus

Agree about the mirrors. Superb buses though.

i thought all these bristol double deckers were fitted with a gardner engine?
What causes the whine noise then?

Stunning. Pity the guy chatting a lot of rubbish is interrupting the sounds!
Indeed. I can never understand why people go to these events, but then don't appreciate the engine sounds etc, and spoil things for others.
But it was a beer & buses event. Of course people will be chatting. If anything, the person filming would have been better sat further back.
love engine and gearbox whine haven to me am kid again WOW .
It's something special, isn't it? Happy memories
4 mins later, hopefully, the Friday night crowd

Too much ambient noise

He needs to close the doors
Why
It was way too hot, and it's not like the bus was in service.
My Dad drove Bristol RE's in the '70s and he had the doors closed during transit also it is health and safety
