Sheep and goats thrived through the entire winter with no hay, 100% grazing every day.

My favorite sheep videos on RUclips from Mr Judy’s herd. Nobody else really shares grazing videos with small ruminants in the south like he does

Those are probably some of the happiest and most fulfilled dogs in the world. The tails wagging when they ran over to bark at something then hang with their buds for a minute tells it all.

Greg I'm glad y'all tried the goats and learned what you learned. I completely agree with your assessment in your situation. My situation is a bit different, so I do think I'll have a few goats on this small tract (where all perimeter will be 4-5 strand-more if I find it necessary. I needed to know the feeder trick, thanks. And after we clean up some briars and brush I'll probably transition to all sheep.

Thanks for the video! I was going to do a video on some of my finished fence, but the wind was awful. I know you have way better content than me so it makes sense for you do it rain, shine, snow, and wind. I’ll do my video another day because I like to go back and see how things have changed. I had someone ask me to put out more videos so I’m going to start that back up.

We had sheep and goats along with cattle when I was 'a kid' and goats are terribly hard on your fencing spending more time eating tree leaves than the grass you have for them. A lot of homesteaders romanticize having goats but I'm with you, sheep and/or cattle only. We had wool sheep but if I got back into livestock now I'd investigate the hair/meat breeds unless I had someone interested in weaving.

I didn't think the goats would measure up to your sheep. Glad to see you sticking with just the sheep and love your sheep content. Do you have any pure Anatolian dogs working? Fast as greyhounds, beautiful, fearless, quiet.

I'd love to be getting me some fence posts, etc., but cash flow is a bit of a problem right now. I don't have a problem keeping my goats in, but I don't have the same sort of system as you do. Mine are free ranged during the day and penned up at night.

    Planning for ranching as a rookie 🏞️ 🐑 🐏 🐾
    What is best?
Acquire flock and LGDs at the same time? Or 1 before the other?
I wouldn't want to get a flock and have it unprotected. At the same time, getting LGDs first and then they don't have a flock to protect.
Everything including animal additions & dynamics are processes in themselves. Each one, especially different species, takes time to acquire, work with, creating an overall lifestyle.
    Blessed be 🌈

I'm in western Canada. I buy organic meat from a private farmer. He advertises in carnivore Facebook groups and has a good website. I would recommend selling that way if you're allowed to wherever you are.

It's never that simple until you've established in your area. It's a very common question and is rarely answered except to say: Your land/weather and your animals and your management will be the ultimate determining factors as to how much land each animal requires. If all goes well, you start under capacity and work towards it AND the capacity will increase according to your management of the microbes. The closer you're running to "capacity" the more vigilant one must be adjusting for "shortages" of weather/management/luck to keep from over grazing. Never over-graze. Sell at any price to avoid over grazing the plants. Best of luck.
